1 Engine Burning Oil problem of the 2012 Acura MDX

Failure Date: 01/01/2021

About 2 months ago, my SUV had a message alert come on while I was sitting still after just starting my vehicle in walmart parking lot after grocery shopping, saying to check the oil level; oil level low. Also, just recently, March 27th I had to add oil to my vehicle again; 3/4 of a quart low on oil. The very next morning, I had another alert come across my message board saying to check the oil level- oil level low. So I checked it again, it showed at the top of the hash marks on the dipstick as it should. So I'm not sure what's going on there unless it's a malfunction of sorts or a sensor issue. I check my oil when I fill up my gas tank. All of a sudden, my SUV was burning/ using oil. I have to keep putting oil in due to a low oil level look entirely too often. I've had to put oil in my engine at least twice a month. And I'm not talking about just enough to top it off, I'm talking anywhere from 3/4 of a quart to 3 quarts or more at times. There are no leaks, no puddles or oil splatter on the bottom of my truck or in my driveway. My truck is having a severe oil consumption problem. I know there was an extended vehicle warranty that was supposed to fix this that expired April of 2021-I did not get this vehicle until September of 2020. Also, I did do the thousand mile test and it failed miserably. No one can tell me if it was fixed or not, but obviously, either way, it did not get fixed or the fix did not work. It is a costly fix and it is a manufacturer fail, not mine. This needs to be fixed before it creates any future problems or years up the pistons in my engine or locks up. Any help or assistance would be greatly appreciated! thank you.

2 Engine Burning Oil problem of the 2012 Acura MDX

Failure Date: 12/29/2020

My 2012 Acura Mdx has an oil consumption issue that Acura is aware of being a problem, however it is not offering to cover the cost associated with fixing the issue. My vehicle burned through more than 2 quarts of oil in a matter of 1 month. This needs to be a recall as it's a safety issue with the operation of the vehicle. Lack of oil could cause the engine to fail.

3 Engine Burning Oil problem of the 2011 Acura MDX

Failure Date: 07/11/2020

4 Engine Burning Oil problem of the 2011 Acura MDX

Failure Date: 03/22/2020

I've had a recurring problem with oil burning through at a much faster rate than expected. For example, in the last two months since my last oil change with an Acura service/repair center, the oil indicator light has come on repeatedly. Also, the check emissions system has also displayed after driving on the freeway. It smelled liked something was burning in the engine. I checked the oil only to find out no oil was empty. I addressed the oil indicator light to Acura several months ago during a previous oil change. They told me everything is fine. I talked to a separate mechanic and he stated he has seen problems with the Mdx on other makes and models of cars where scratches on the cylinder wall were causing the increased oil usage. In order to fix it would cost around $4,000. I've been loyal to Acura in servicing my car. None of them has stated that this could be an issue. Also, shouldn't a problem like this warrant a recall? just looking for some answers on an issue I think is wrong in the way customers have been informed and treated along with potentially a safety issue.

5 Engine Burning Oil problem of the 2010 Acura MDX

Failure Date: 03/05/2020

My vehicle started to burn a lot of oil I took it to Acura and they told me it was indeed burning a lot of oil and that there is a recall from Acura, but because there are 215,000 miles on my car they are not wanting to cover it. Even though I was never told of the recall and because of a mechanical issue on their part I should not be responsible for the cost. It's not fair at all.

6 Engine Burning Oil problem of the 2013 Acura MDX

Failure Date: 12/09/2019

I received notification of excessive oil consumption affecting my vehicle from Acura (2013 Mdx) I took the car as instructed to bridgewater Acura and they performed an oil consumption test. According to the manufacturer the car had to consume at least 1 quart of oil per 1,000 miles. The dealer stated that my car showed that my car consumed 1 quart at the first 1,000 miles, and 1/2 quart each time at the following 3 -1,000 mile mark. So Acura would not pay for the repair necessary to correct the problem. After this I had an new oil change done and after traveling 4,260 miles and before I was due for another oil change the low level indicator came on. Sure enough the service department of dch Honda in old bridge, NJ verified that my car was out of oil. The dipstick was not registering any oil on it. I had at that time an oil change done to save my engine even if according to manufacturer's recommendation and car computer I was not due for one for another 3,000 miles. My car is obviously burning more oil than expected at 77,000 miles on the engine. I am not an aggressive driver and don't idle the car. I suspect the test was not documented correctly since I am consuming close to 5 quarts of oil per 4,260 traveled miles. I would like to have a new test done and properly witnessed by me this time.

7 Engine Burning Oil problem of the 2011 Acura MDX

Failure Date: 09/11/2019

On sept 11 2019 my mechanic notified me of a problem with my 2011 Acura Mdx. He said it was excessively burning oil. He said to contact Acura/Honda because they identified it as a problem with some of their cars. I called that same day and was told that yes, there is a defect in my make and model car and that had issued a warranty to cover the repairs, but unfortunately, because I was 11 days too late, they would not fix the car. I have asked for an extension to at least get the oil consumption test done (that I would pay for) to see if my car has the defect. They said that I am free to get the test done on my own and even if the car is defective they will not fix it. All I am asking is for them to fix the defective car. I never received the letter and they cannot verify whether they sent it to me.

8 Engine Burning Oil problem of the 2011 Acura MDX

Failure Date: 08/14/2019

The vehicle is consuming too much oil. Dealership made us go through oil consumption test and confirmed this is an issue and included us in their warranty extension to do the repairs. However, its been more than a month and there is no timeline on even when the parts will be available and it could be another month or 2 or 4 months. I called dealer several times as well as Acura with no different answer.

9 Engine Burning Oil problem of the 2011 Acura MDX

Failure Date: 06/15/2019

While driving on the highway for extended periods of time, an unidentifiable burning odor was emitted into the cabin. Typically pulling over and allowing for it to cool did the trick. Eventually the smell returned. This time the scent got unbearable and the engine and car began visibly shaking, especially when accelerating or slowing down. Mechanic revealed there was an oil leakage in the cylinders due to a faulty seal, thus leading to excess oil consumption.

10 Engine Burning Oil problem of the 2011 Acura MDX

Failure Date: 06/01/2019

I change engine oil every 3,000 miles, but I have to change every 1,000 miles in the last year. Explain to the technician every time that it is because the oil circulates and does not return and burns out in the middle and disappears. So I check the amount of oil once a week and always replenish the amount. Especially when driving over long distances, it's so anxious, you can't stop the anxiety that the oil burns out and stands on the street or the engine itself burns out and becomes useless.

11 Engine Burning Oil problem of the 2012 Acura MDX

Failure Date: 02/27/2019

I recently received a letter from Acura for regarding engine oil consumption. This could affect the performance of the engine. Acura is aware that there is an issue regarding this, however they are requiring that an oil change be done through the dealership at the owners expense for the affected vehicles. Acura should preform the inspection either in another manner, or they should provide the oil change at their own expense if that is the only option to check if this is an issue. The other option would be to allow the consumer to get an oil change at another service center that may be less expensive than what the dealer charges. It seems that Acura is trying to benefit from their own issue.

2012 Acura Mdx 3. 7 liter engine has very high oil consumption. The Acura dealer has tested the consumption in three tests to be about one quart every 1500 miles. The engine mileage is 86,321. This vehicle has always been serviced at required intervals by the dealer. I am the original owner.

14 Engine Burning Oil problem of the 2012 Acura MDX

Failure Date: 07/01/2017

Tl-the contact owns a 2012 Acura Mdx. The contact had been complaining about the oil consumption for up to three years. After doing some research the contact discovered the manufacturer came out with a TSB number: b19-006 on 05/18/19. It was a warranty extension titled engine oil exceeds client expectations. The contact took the vehicle for an oil consumption test crown Acura richmond 8704 w broad st, henrico, va 23294. They said to come back when the oil was low after close 3,000 miles. The contact took the vehicle back in on 10/17/19 and the dealer stated that there was nothing they could do since it was close to 3,000 miles. The contact has also spoken to the manufacturer about the oil consumption issue over the past three years. She feels that that both the dealer and the manufacturer had not been helpful once the oil consumption issue was discovered. The contact had not received follow up calls to address the issue or was alerted of the TSB when it came out. The failure mileage was 157,420. Tf.

15 Engine Burning Oil problem of the 2011 Acura MDX

Failure Date: 05/20/2017

Excessive engine oil consumption.

16 Engine Burning Oil problem of the 2011 Acura MDX

Failure Date: 12/12/2016

Excessive oil consumption. The car has no leaks. I have had it checked out by a few dealer. Car has 96,000 miles. After an oil change, the oil level would be consume back down to close to low when recheck after driving 1500 miles in 2 months.

17 Engine Burning Oil problem of the 2011 Acura MDX

Failure Date: 10/25/2016

Excessive oil consumption. Acura claims burning 1 qt every 1,000 miles is acceptable. Based on web search many other owners of the same vehicle are having the same problem. My guess is that it's a rather prevalent problem given how few people actually regularly check their oil and I'm certain the service technicians aren't informing the customer when the oil level is unacceptably low.

18 Engine Burning Oil problem of the 2012 Acura MDX

Failure Date: 10/19/2016

The engine oil on this models burns out very quickly. I have noticed that I get indicator to change engine oil in about every 6000 miles even though I use synthetic oil which has the life spam of up to 12000 miles. I use my car for normal drive from home to work and leisure.

19 Engine Burning Oil problem of the 2011 Acura MDX

Failure Date: 12/17/2015

Vehicle purchased used with 47k miles on it. By the time I noticed the oil consumption problem (which I certainly didn't expect) the used car warranty had expired. I am currently burning 1 qt of oil every 1k miles. As the vehicle has a factory 70k powertrain warranty I brought it to my local Acura dealer and was told that this was normal and acceptable under Acura guide lines. I explained in my 38 years of driving many vehicles most of them new that I had never owned anything that burned oil until I purchased an Acura which is completely contrary to why people purchase expensive high end vehicles from reputable car companies in the first place. They are currently monitoring the consumption now but I hold out little hope as I have read on different Acura Mdx forums that Acura is doing nothing about this. I did read where Honda was forced to recall 1. 6 million 3. 5l engines for this very issue and only offered to extend the factory warranties as a result. These engines are of the same basic design save for the Acura 3. 7l has no cast iron sleeves hence the larger displacement. I am deeply concerned that this will cause a premature failure of my catalytic converter and spark plugs. I had believed that emission requirements were to strict today to allow for any oil consumption (burning) under the epa's strict guide lines. I can not believe that in this day and age that this would even be an issue in such a marquis brand such as Acura. Since Honda would far outsell the Acura brand there were no doubt far more complaints for the 3. 5l engine then the smaller selling 3. 7l engine of similar architecture. I hope that more consumers with the same predicament will come forward to prove that the same issue exists with the simmiliar Acura engine. Please call out this matter with Acura while I continue to hope for the best outcome which would fully necessitate a new short block.

20 Engine Burning Oil problem of the 2011 Acura MDX

Failure Date: 07/22/2015

The vehicle started consuming oil around 80,000 miles. At 90,000 miles the engine was consuming 1 quart every 1,000 miles at 110,00 it was consuming 1 quart every 500 miles. At 117,000 miles the vehicle consumes 1 quart every 250 miles. It is not burning the oil. No smoke at the tailpipe. No smoke stains on the bumper. Ny state emissions test is fine when inspected. It is not leaking the oil. No oil puddles under the car. No heavy accumulation of oil on the undercarriage. Have not yet tested engine compression. Will do that soon.
