Wiring Problems of BMW 330

BMW 330 owners have reported 16 problems related to wiring (under the electrical system category). The most recently reported issues are listed below.

1 Wiring problem of the 2004 BMW 330

Failure Date: 04/18/2019

Passenger side headlight assembly wires break and cause the headlight to stop emitting light or otherwise working. Repeated attempts to repair the wiring harness eventually fail. This occurs with mere normal use of the car and passage of time. The headlight assembly and bulb are still intact, but simply receive no power due to the broken wires. The assembly can fail at any time, whether stationary, in motion, or on back roads or highways. When this issue is googled on this particular car, a 20042006 BMW 3 series e46 coupe with bi-xenon adaptive headlights, many many users report the same issue. No matter the condition, location, and service history of the car, the headlight assembly on the passenger side will always stop working simply because of the wiring. See: https://forum. E46fanatics. Com/showthread. Php?t=1073501 if repaired enough times, the assembly becomes unrepairable, at which point the user is stuck driving without a headlight, a dangerous situation to be in. Ordering an incredibly costly $1500 part to replace it is not only costly, but will eventually result in the same critical issue re-appearing because the design is inherently defective. This is a serious safety issue. Other costs include mechanics who insist to customers that the issue is both wiring and the bulb too, causing unsuspecting users to be charged extra for replacement bulbs and the associated labor as well. First occurrence on my car was April 2019, second was October 2019, and third was February 2020 at which point the part was deemed unrepairable. 20042006 BMW 325ci and BMW 330ci with adaptive bi-xenon hid headlights.

3 Wiring problem of the 2004 BMW 330

Failure Date: 09/26/2018

The adaptive headlights are flickering (stationary or in motion). This points to a faulty wiring issue, according to many other owners reporting this on internet forums for this vehicle.

4 Wiring problem of the 2006 BMW 330

Failure Date: 05/18/2018

The blower motor wiring overheats and causes the vehicle to catch on fire. This recall has been out for several months now, and they have not had a fix for it yet. I don't need my car catching on fire, I have a one year old, it is not easy to get them out of the car.

6 Wiring problem of the 2006 BMW 330

Failure Date: 08/17/2017

Tl the contact owns a 2006 BMW 330xi. The contact noticed smoke under the hood, which entered the vehicle through the air vents. The contact also heard an abnormal noise coming from the motor months before the manufacturer sent notification of NHTSA campaign number: 17v676000 (electrical system). In addition, the service engine warning indicator remained illuminated for an extended period of time. The dealer (newbold BMW, 1283 central park dr, o'fallon, IL 62269, (618) 628-7300) replaced the wiring and diagnosed that the bearings needed to be replaced. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 140,000. VIN tool confirms parts not available.

7 Wiring problem of the 2004 BMW 330

Failure Date: 07/01/2016

Headlight wiring jackets flaked off. Had the ballast and bulb replaced in passenger side headlight, because the headlight no longer worked. Noticed that the wiring was bare & looked like someone had clipped 2 of the wires. After replacing both the ballast & headlight it still did not work. But a couple of days after, turned on the headlights and now it works again. I know this is not safe, I see where others have had the same issue. Not sure how to get the new wiring for the headlight or does the whole thing need replaced? it should be a recall with this many cars having the same issue.

8 Wiring problem of the 2001 BMW 330

Failure Date: 10/15/2012

I was receiving a intermittent left tail light warning indicator and assumed it was a bulb that was going out. After some time had past I received a steady left tail light indicator and when I was about to replace the bulb I discovered the bulbs was fine and found the wiring/connector in the tail light bulb carrier had a short/melted. I believe this is the same issue/problem on the 2002-2005 BMW e46 3series which a tail light recall was issued.

9 Wiring problem of the 2002 BMW 330

Failure Date: 07/20/2012

This car is 2002 BMW 330ci. I noticed that the warning light illuminated, which indicated that a tail light or brake light was not working. I replaced the bulbs, however, the warning light remained illuminated. I also noticed that the wiring harness plug had some damage in the middle and lighting assembly on the right had a connector in the middle gone. My mechanic stated that there was a recall on this problem. I contacted the recall center who stated my car was not covered. I noticed a lot of the BMW models were covered including 330i and the 330xi. I also went to a BMW dealer who again said my car was not covered. I don't want to be pulled over for a problem that should be covered by BMW. Updated 8/7/12.

10 Wiring problem of the 2001 BMW 330

Failure Date: 02/06/2012

Left tail lights stopped working. Inspection found burnt ground wire at wiring connector. Replacement of ground wire, connector and bulb holder assembly needed.

11 Wiring problem of the 2002 BMW 330

Failure Date: 01/26/2012

After the recall, NHTSA action number: ea09019 , I brought in my car and they added a ground wire that was to fix the issue with an intermittent lights-out warning at the dashboard. After several months, the issue was still there. I brought the vehicle back to BMW and they said that they already added the ground cable and that's all they could do. The same issue still exists. Upon reading further regarding this issue, it appears the wiring harnesses had "melted" due to excessive heat created by a faulty ground cable. The damage has already been made and BMW refused to fix the issues caused by this faulty design. They quoted me over $800 to replace the entire harness and charged me 1 hour of labor @$195/hr to find that out. The faulty ground cable created the excessive heat creating issues with the wiring harness to the rear of the car lights. BMW should pay not just to prevent issues but to pay for issues already created by this faulty design.

12 Wiring problem of the 2004 BMW 330

Failure Date: 11/01/2010

2004 BMW 330i - tail light wiring failure. Tail light bulb socket (part number w0133-1663035 failed due to over heating and melting of connector. Results in loss of brake light function. Problem common to both driver and passenger side. Purchasing new part to try to correct problem however problem may also include failure of the connector (female) on the wiring harness which is not readily available. Over heating appears to be due to undersizing of connector/wire. This appears to be a common problem with e46 BMW's (3 series). Problem was brought to dealer's attention while under warranty,. . . They did not fix it. Contacted corporate head quarters,. . . They did not acknowledge this was a common problem. (ref. Ea09-019).

13 Wiring problem of the 2002 BMW 330

Failure Date: 07/26/2007

Failure of the turn signals, brake lights and rear parking lamps of the 1999-2005 BMW 3 series ("e46"). Also noted are forward turn signal lighting failures. The problem may involve two unrelated component failures: chronically overheating/partially melted 7-pin wiring connectors (at the rear lamp cluster) and corroded bulb sockets (at the front turn signals). (the first problem may be more common in warm weather states. ) by way of background, I have owned three e46 model BMW's, all purchased new. All have had repeated, yet intermittent turn signal and exterior lighting problems. Most recently I noted another intermittent failure of all the lights in the left rear lamp cluster of my 2002 BMW 330i with ~48,000 miles. After another careful inspection, to include removing each bulb and checking its filament, resistance and connection cleanliness, I found something I had not previously noted--the 7-pin wiring connector was melted at terminal #2, the terminal that appears to be the common ground for all the lamps in the cluster. The car's wiring harness connector (female) and the male pin (#2) both show excessive resistance/heat damage. I have removed it from my car and taken some photographs for submission via an email account to mr. Ajit alkondon at dot. The part as installed in my car has the following identification: 63. 21-6 907 935 date code: 19. 9. 01 (for September 19th, 2001) time code: 15:54 as an aside, a local BMW dealership has previously replaced the rear bulb carrier on the right side of the car. While it has helped, I am still left with chronic, yet highly intermittent, lamp failures, (as indicated by the car's warning system) for _both_ rear lamp assemblies. At the front of the car, all three e46's I owned have had forward turn signal sockets replaced for corrosion, usually within the first few years or months of ownership.

14 Wiring problem of the 2003 BMW 330

Failure Date: 09/27/2005

Tail lights failed on my 2003 BMW 330xi. The shop foreman at my BMW dealership explained that he has been seeing a lot of tail light failures because the wiring was not designed to handle the load and therefore the wires have been frying out. My work order states repairs were done to diagnose & replace melted tail light connectors and wiring.
