The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed that the timing chain needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The vehicle was not taken to a dealer. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and did not assist. The approximate failure mileage was 100,009.
Currently having issues with a wastegate rattle on turbos. Rough engine idle. Having multiple misfires, and stuck open fuel injectors. Causing tailpipes to excessively smoke (white color) while going into limp mode could not go past 20mph and surging. Issues happen when stationary and while driving. I was driving 60 mph when the engine seized. The rpms fell to 0 and the steering wheel became very stiff. I pulled on the side of the road tried to start the car, nothing happened and I had to call the tow truck. None of the lights came on. Everything looked fine and very misterious. After the mechanics disassembled the engine they said that apparently cylinder number six seized. At the time when this happened, the oil was at he max level, as well as antifreeze, the temperature was normal. My mechanic assumes that it seized because of loss of pressure, which is weird because as I was told there are 2 pressure sensors in this type of engine (n55). This is very frustrating and pricey repair, which ran over $7,000. My car has 90k miles and I�ve been taking very good care of it. I have spoken to employees of BMW and they said that this is very common defect, which is very upsetting for this type of luxurious sedan. Shame on you BMW!!!.

Our 2011 BMW 535i experienced a failure of the vanos bolts which made the car inoperable and required a $5,000 repair. Research revealed that BMW recalled approximately 165,000 cars manufactured in the same time frame as our car for the same problem and extended the warranty for many others. When we contacted BMW north America about the repair cost they would provide no information about why our car was not included in the recall/extended warranty. We would like to know which cars were recalled by BMW and better understand why our car was excluded.
Fuel pump cut out unexpectedly while driving at posted speed limit of 60 mph. Almost run over by tractor trailer while pulling car to side of the road. Car was later re-started.

As my wife was driving home, in an only ankle deep puddle inside of our subdivision, water was able to get into the air intake causing the vehicle to hydrolock and eventually destroy the engine. I believe such a small amount of water should not be able to disable a car in the middle of a rainstorm. I observed numerous other vehicles traveling thru just fine including a late model Infiniti q50.
Driving 70mph on highway 85 south. Vehicle suddenly and without warning shut off. All power lost. Power steering lost. Warning display indicated drive train malfunction. Vehicle was totally inoperable. Vehicle would not restart after shutting down on highway and had to be pushed to safety and then towed.

Fuel system. Latley I have been driving me 2011 Bmws 535i and have been having some scary problems with it. Last week I was on the highway driving 65 mph when I noticed the power of car was turning on and off. (headlights, dash lights, car power everything) it then completely shut off on the freeway. Luckily I was close to the shoulder and pulled over. Prior to this incident, my car was left at the BMW dealership in san diego for a full inspection and nothing was brought to my attention. After doing some research, I see that I am one of the thousands that are experiencing this same problem. Fuel pump and injectors gone bad. Please push for a recall!.
Tl - the contact owns a 2009 BMW 535x. The contact stated that while driving 50 mph, the vehicle decelerated as the reduce engine power warning message illuminated. The vehicle was merged to the side of the road, where it was turn off and resumed normal operation after restarting the engine. BMW clearly states that this vehicle had a recall on the fuel injectors and related components and when the recall was completed it states that a emblem to mark completed is placed under the hood. Although, this is not on my vehicle nor does it show being completed on any type of information. BMW is very secretive about all issues on the vehicles that they manufacturer. In fact, most all BMW dealerships service departments do their very best too make you pay for non issues and will not repair what is really found to be the issue. If needed, I can give you at least two that I am very familiar with about this matter.
In passing on 2 lane highway with oncoming traffic a warning of reduced engine power occurred with corresponding reduction in engine power with significantly reduced margin of safety with respect to oncoming traffic. This is happening multiple times and has been in for repair once. Reliability is unpredictable.

I received a recall notice from BMW in June 2014 re a potential bolt failure. The letter stated I would be notified when the parts would be in and when repairs can be done. When I contacted the local dealership (elmhurst BMW and BMW north America) on July 10, they said they have no idea when the parts will be in. It occurs to me that BMW may be attempting to limit their potential liability via the letter and the symptoms listed (poor gas mileage, etc. ). As a single female with this car as my only method of transportation, it is rather disconcerting and every thing this car does right now makes me nervous. Again, I received a recall in the mail regarding recall 14v-176: vanos assembly bolts since June 2014 and today is sept 25th, I still havent gotten an answer as to if they have parts to replaced this recall. I called the el cajon BMW dealership in California san diego where I purchased my used BMW from and they kept on saying they dont have parts for my car yet BMW hasn't supplied them with the parts for the recall. Im concern for my safety and my family's safety and want to file a complaint for my vehicle. Please inform me of what to do? and if u can contact BMW. . . . Its been 4 months of my recall letter and I'm tired of calling them.
My 3 kids and I had left the bwm dealer after I had parts serviced/parts replaced, and jumped on the interstate. I was cruising around 70mph when I felt the car slow down and the msg "engine malfunction, reduce speed" appeared. I veered to the right a little,but I quickly found and exit and pulled over. Fortunately, the traffic on the interstate was lite and an accident was avoided, but it did get my heart racing. The dealer said this was a "common" type of msg, but I'm weary. I tried telling them about the fuel pump issue, but they said my car was not affected. They wanted to charge me another diagnostic fee and I just paid to have my car serviced and diagnosed! they also suggested I continue to drive it until the issue forces me to have to bring it in - basically until something breaks. I would have the dealer would have started with replacing the high pressure fuel pump and moving on from there since it is a documented problem. We'll see what happens.

The check engine lght came on and the car became undrivable . It was taken at the dealervfacility -new car , with 180 miles on it - for the engine issue and state emmision sticker. The car was never returned, due to engine valve failure - lose pipes at the final assy of the engine components .
Engine valve failure , diagnosed at BMW -gallery ,norwood, MA , facility . The engine valve required full replacement . The car had been qualified as " lemon car " . Could not pass the state emission test .
Ignition coil malfunction recurs after dealership repairs of the same problem. Causes engine speed to vary and be outside the drivers control.
As I was leaving the stop sign and entering the busy intersection, my engine suddenly died. The second incident happened a few days later. I was driving about 15 mph, again the engine suddenly died. We took the car to BMW encinitas for its first maintainance check and we did mention these two scary incidents. They re-assured us that everything was fine. The latest incident happened two days ago, Feb 23 ,2015. My husband was driving at about 15 mph, and again the engine suddenly died and the transmission went into neutral.

Driving at 30mph,engines power suddenly reduced,engine malfunction light comes on . Took the car to BMW fremont, they found the intake camshaft position sensors faulty. They replaced camshaft sensors,pulse generator,o-ring and torx screw. As advised by the service agent had to do an oil, oilfilter change and fuel injection service to prevent default on the warranty of parts put in. As the car was out of the warranty period(even though it has a very low mileage of 18760) so had to pay $1235 out of pocket. At 19350miles the similar issue came up, took it back to BMW fremont, they found faults stored in dme,2a7c variable camshaft timing control intake cold start 1 time not currently present,cleared faults and customer to monitor.
Cpsc:i1320310a. 2011 BMW 535i. Consumer stated on two separate occasions, while driving, the engine suddenly stopped. The first time the consumer took the vehicle to the dealer, they informed him, the problem was minor and supposedly fixed it. The second time, the incident occurred, the dealer stated it would take 10 days to fix the problem.
Car starts normally. Upon reaching cruising speed car engine warning light comes on and car immediately reduces engine power. This happens randomly, and has happened on side roads and freeways. I have to pull over immediately and shut off car, wait, and re-start car. Later, and randomly same thing happens again. Scary.

I was lucky enough to barely get to middle lane to avoid accident. Updated 6/21/10 the dealer identified the problem as an acute failure of the high pressure fuel pump. Updated 06/24/10.
