2 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2008 BMW 550

Failure Date: 05/01/2025

Vehicle abruptly shut off while reversing out of my driveway. Vehicle restarted after a long crank and appeared to enter a reduced power mode/limp mode with a transmission fault that locked the transmission in 4th gear. Reading obd2 codes revealed a code for the crankshaft position sensor. Inspection of the 3 terminal sensor revealed 2 of the terminal contacts on the sensor to be shorted out with melted plastic on both the sensor and the wiring connector plug. Shorted wire could be a result of a leaking coolant passage at rear of engine within bellhousing where sensor is located. Coolant intrusion into sensor connector resulted in electrical short and melted connections.

10 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2010 BMW 550

Failure Date: 09/13/2021

On 11/10/21 I was advised by long beach BMW (long beach, CA) that my car needs a new engine. The car smells of gas (both when running and when sitting) and burns excessive amounts of oil. The car requires a quart of oil every 200 - 400 miles. The first engine was replaced after only 77,000 miles because the car was stalling unexpectedly. Now, the current engine needs to be replaced after only 51,000 miles because the car smells of gas (likely because the fuel injection system is not working properly) and because it is burning excessive amounts of oil. BMW expects me to cover the cost of a new engine even thought there is an obvious defect. I contacted BMW of north America and they offered to take the car back & give me $2000 toward a new car. There is currently a recall because of engines at risk of blowing up but for some reason, my car does not appear to be part of that recall. Https://abcnews. Go. Com/amp/us/wirestory/BMW-recalls-vehicles-3rd-time-due-engine-fire-83338862 BMW has been notified of the defects with this car and has diagnosed the defective engine but refuses to replace the engine at their cost as part of the current recall. Instead, the car remains a hazard at risk of catching fire. BMW's negligence is placing me, my family & other travelers at risk of harm or death because they know of the problem & will not address it. This is the 2nd complaint that I've sent to the NHTSA (the first on 9/13/21) and now there is a recall & so the NHTSA is aware of the problem as well.

12 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2012 BMW 550

Failure Date: 05/26/2021

Engine is available for inspection upon request. Earlier this month, my 550i completely shut off at a traffic light. When attempting to restart the engine, the starter strained very hard and smoke came out of the engine. Engine was immediately shut off and the car was towed to a local shop. In turn the shop replaced the starter the following day and heard knocking from the engine once it turned it over. Upon examination the shop pulled open the oil filter and it was full of metal shrapnel. I feel fortunate the car was not in motion at the time of the failure, given the engine shut off with no warning this could have resulted in a catastrophic accident.

19 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2013 BMW 550

Failure Date: 10/18/2019

After having made several replacements to parts (e. G. All three fuel pumps) to this vehicle over three, the vehicle now requires a new engine due to the failure of a rod ring. The root cause for this failure remains unidentified, however BMW is refusing to identify and/or accept accountability to address this failure which requires an engine replacement (>$13000). Any vehicle of this age (~7 years old) and mileage (~80,000 mi. ) should not require an engine replacement. Fortunately this issue occurred while traveling on urban roads at speeds less that 50 mph. Had this occurred at highway speeds, this failure could have been catastrophic for me, my loved ones and others. Additionally each failure (e. G. Of fuel pumps and rod ring) has caused me to increasingly question the safety resulting from BMW's vehicles using these components. At this point in the absence of a remedy from BMW I am left with no choice by to file this complaint as I have tried everything possible with BMW.

Mike discepolo with BMW north America and after 30 days of investigation he told me that the fire was because I failed to maintain my car, I searched the net and his answer was consistent with answers to other BMW cars that start fire while parked. Pulled a NHTSA report on this vehicle and saw nothing dangereous about this vehicle until we got it inspected. There were over 30 bolts and screws missing from the engine and in their words, "the engine was raising up like a heart beating out of its chest. " we got a 2nd opinion from, euro auto pro in lilburn, georgia and they confirmed the vehicle needed valve seals and the vehicle had been wrecked in the front. "takata recall" I have a 2013 BMW 550i xdrive m sport. It keeps on misfiring on cylinder number two and I have changed all 8 spark plugs and the injector for that cylinder. I also used octane booster and sea foam to clean the carbon out the fuel system. I don't know what else it could be if it's still misfiring on that cylinder. It starts up good and sometimes it starts up kind of hesitant. When I come to a complete stop after really going fast it starts to shake as I am stopped and when I go to take off it lurches sometimes. I have only had mechanics work on my car and can't find any other explanation as to why it's not functioning right.
