Got my car towed to midas on 12/15 because it wouldn't start. They said I needed a tune up and a new intake. They went to test my car and the engine caught fire. I received a call on 12/17 from midas saying that my engine caught fire and the intake specifically was under gm recall as it is a gm 3800 series ii engine. I was directed by midas to file a complaint about my issue, and that this work would be covered as it is part of a gm recall. My car won't start and I need to get it towed to a local dealership for the work to be done.

My vehicle is a 1997 Buick park Ave with 140,000 miles. I'm the second owner. My in-laws were the original owners. I got the vehicle from them in 1999 with approximately 9000 miles on the vehicle. Therefore, I know the complete car care history of this vehicle. Yesterday, September 1, 2008 my granddaughter was driving this car and she lost control of the vehicle due to lost of steering capabilities. No one was injured nor body damage due to her low speed when this incident occurred. The tow truck operator indicated that the engine cradle split into pieces due to rust and this caused the steering to fail since the steering rack is mounted to this engine cradle. The rust through of this the engine cradle (or engine frame) was confirmed by the repair shop today, September 2, 2008. The repair shop indicated that the 1997 Buick park Ave's had a steel engine cradle and that the moisture and salt gets caught within this box frame due to it's position directly behind the wheel wells. The repair shop indicated that 1998 park Ave's( and after) have aluminum engine cradles but that the 1998 part will not fit the 1997 Buick park Ave. The only repair is to find another used engine cradle from a 1997 Buick park Ave which costs approximately $400 to $500 just for the used part. The other alternative is to buy a new engine cradle from a gm dealership for approximately $1200 to $1400. It seems to me that this engine cradle is a very critical part of the frame of the car and should not rust through within 10 years. All of the steering controls are mounted to this part and when this engine cradle fails all steering capabilities are lost. . Read more...

I have a 2000 Buick park Ave. . . . While driving down the road 70mph the car quits no warning. It might start right back up or it might take up to 1 1/2 hrs to start again. We have had it to the dealer and they are unable to figure out what is going on with it. This has been going on for several months now. If you have any suggestions it would be greatly appreciated.
On may 6, 2006 we were coming back to spartanburg, SC from the beach. We were about 7 miles from kingsree, SC. After leaving a service station, we started getting "check engine" messages. We went back to the service station to see what was wrong. We had no coolant. I put a gallon of coolant in and decided to go into kingstree, SC in case there was more trouble. Just as we got to kingstree, SC we stopped at another station after getting more "check engine" messages. Again, we were out of coolant and now the car would not start. A wrecker towed it to a garage. The mechanic said he was fairly certain of what the problem was because Buick had been having lots of trouble with a particular part. He then confirmed that it was the upper intake. He replaced the upper intake part with a revised part from Buick and assured us we would not have any more trouble with the coolant. This cost $571. 48 and a 6 hour delay. The consequences could have been much more serious if we had not been near a service station. Buick refuses to pay or acknowledge they have a problem with the intake.

Pushrod malfunctioned in the engine, caused car accident.
The consumer states that his wife started the vehicle and the engine blew. The noise sounded as if a bomb went off. There was a large hole on top of the engine. The dealer said that they didn't know why this happened. The consumer also replaced all four tire due to vibration. Scc.
There were three systems that had problems, but one of the systems, the door locking system, seems to have cured itself. The other two problems, that of the a/c and the seat memory systems, began to show up as soon as we started driving the car after purchase. The first time that I registered those problems with the dealership, the car had been driven 2886 miles. We purchased the car on July 24, 2002. I spoke to the service manager at least once before taking the car into the dealership on sept. 11, 2002. Air conditioning: after car sits in hot sun for 2 hrs or more, a/c refuses to come on. Auto light is illuminated. Blower does not come on and floor is shown on display screen. Compressor does run. Attempts to make run will sometimes get system operative. Seat memory: after doors unlocked with key pad, driver selects his or her seat memory button. Seat moves forward. When ignition switch is selected to on and before engine is started, seat will move to exit position. This condition intermittent--probably one time in 50 tries. Dealer cannot duplicate either problem and refused to replace any components. Better business bureau has been contacted and we are in arbitration at this moment. We may press for a gm re-purchase of the car. We have given dealer one more chance to find and fix the problems. We like the car very much and want to keep it if gm will fix the problems. Their stone wall approach is not acceptible.
2003 Buick Park Avenue with leaking intake gasket. Consumer states that dealer told him this was a common occurrence. Consumer would like general motors to make the repairs at no cost to him.
2001 Buick Park Avenue with engine problems. Consumer states that the engine cuts out when accelerating. Dealer states that everything was tested and was found to be normal. Dealer stated that he was probably pushing the accelerator down to fast.
