car   Automatic Transmission Gear Indicator problem of Ford Focus

The vehicle involved is a 2014 Ford Focus. Trouble with the dual clutch automatic transmission from the first day of ownership. The car now has 6k miles and the problems persist. The following problems are even worse during cold weather: the transmission shifts poorly, roughly, misses shifts, chooses the wrong gear for the vehicle speed, disengages and sends the engine to redline then drops into gear with a bang and either slows the vehicle with engine braking because the gear is too low, or lugs the engine with no acceleration because the gear is too high. The transmission is always shifting, and seems 'confused' as to what gear that it should be in. In city driving, if I need to suddenly brake, when I re-apply the throttle again, the transmission hangs between gears and the engine revs to redline then drops into gear and chirps the tires. The transmission also makes grinding noises when changing from 1st to 2nd gear. Also very slow to drop to a lower gear when throttle is pressed for quick acceleration. Takes about 2 seconds for it to downshift and then accelerate. Also, the gear indicator on the console (prnds) doesn't line up with the shifter or illuminate to show which gear is selected, so it's difficult to tell whether I've selected reverse, neutral, or drive. In addition, the display on the instrument panel that shows the gear selection sometimes takes over 30 seconds to illuminate or 'boot up' to indicate what gear is selected. I often end up in neutral when I think I've chosen reverse or drive while I wait for the instrument panel indicator to 'boot up'. The dealerships say that I have the current software, and, "they all do that. " dangerous, and will probably add up to very expensive repairs as it can't possibly be reliable under these conditions. This issue happened on Monday, September 2, 2013.

car   Automatic Transmission Gear Indicator problem of Acura MDX

The vehicle's vehicle identification number (VIN) was 2HNYD18212_. My 2002 Acura Mdx has approximately 94,000 mi on it and recently the transmission experienced slippage when it would try to adjust to 2nd gear. An indicator light came on recently and I had my mechanic perform a diagnostic test on it. It was revealed that it was a transmission code. I took it to my local Acura dealer (45 mins away) and they determined that I needed a new transmission. They upfront said they would offer to cover 50% of the cost for parts & labor as a goodwill gesture and gave me a free rental car while my vehicle was being serviced. I then went on NHTSA. Gov and noted there was a vehicle recall in 2004 on the automatic transmission lines for 2002 Acura Mdx's. I brought this issue up with my service rep and they said that in 2004 they had made the proper revision to alleviate this problem due to the recall. (made a revision on the oil cooler line). I then called Acura client services and spoke with a case manager to tell him that I think this problem with my transmission was a direct result of the vehicle recall from 2004 and used the analogy that Acura simply put a band aid over a gaping wound to temporarily solve the problem. He said he would see if he could do anything and as it turns out, he claimed there was nothing better he could offer me than 50/50 split of the costs. Acura did replace my transmission with a rebuilt transmission this time, however they charged me 50% of the service cost (~$1700). I feel that I have gotten the short end of the stick and that had proper precautions been taken in 2004 to replace the transmission, I wouldn't have to take it in the shorts now for $1,700. I believe the Acura recall was p31. It was Jan. 30, 2008 when this automatic transmission gear indicator issue occurred.

car   Automatic Transmission Gear Indicator problem of Infiniti I35

The vehicle is a 2002 Infiniti I35. The vehicle's vehicle identification number (VIN) was JNKDA31A82_. 1) traveling at high speeds 50-60 mph for a considerable time frame, one-two hours. On a highway with stop lights-when trying to stop, my Infiniti I35 (yr. 2002) accelerates while I am trying to brake. The car lurches foward with the engine going from 1500 rpm to 7000 rpms. The incident repeated itself later on 8/16. We were traveling from baltimore to virgina on route 50--good road accomodating high speeds but has lights as one passes through eastern shore towns. The car was towed to infinite's nearest dealership in va beach. According to that dealer's shop, no error messages or issues were reported per their computerized testing. According to them, their road tests , two tests, a drive for 15 minutes and the other was to get the car's speed up to 80 mph on an in-shop rolling machine, revealed no errors. My contacting Infiniti's national consumer affairs office resulted in no tangible assistance. The dealer drove the car to baltimore, 8/20/04 and reported no problems. Interstate 95 was used (its not the same as route 50 with high speeds and frequent, quick(er) stops. The car is not working and needs to be corrected; it is dangerous. Infiniti will not proceed since computerized analysis reports no error messages. In June, 2004, we had taken the car to jba of ellicott city complaining that the car was demonstrating problems: at stop signs, on occasion, the car would not move forward, the engine would race, then the car would lunge forward. That dealership again commented that there was no problem registering on its computer testing, therefore, no problem. It seems that the firm's testing methodology isn't either comprehensive enough or limited to only computer analysis. The car has a defect and this firm can't or won't reach out of the box to try and solve it, excusing any effort on their part because their computer results disclose no "error message". This problem occurred on 08/16/04.

car   Automatic Transmission Gear Indicator problem of Mitsubishi Montero Sport

The vehicle having this issue was a 2000 Mitsubishi Montero Sport. My montero has had significant problems from day one with repeated/numerous visits to several Mitsubishi dealerships in my area. I have had all of the same complaints I have read from other owners and am very disappointed that I bought this sport utility and have spent thousands of dollars to repair. The montero has had pull to the right as described, a vibration when driving at any speeds, and a horrible performance of braking that has almost caused several accidents that could have resulted in my life and my daughters and countless other families. I have a lifetime purchase plan for alignments which are performed on a bi-weekly basis and I have also gone through 4 sets of brakes. I have also experienced my montero to just die, completely shut off in the middle of traffic- dangerous!! then after about 10 minutes and everyone honking and cursing me out it starts after I restart it. Also, with this comes a fire burning smell that I have been told by various mechanics that I have an oil leak in my engine. I have since taken the montero back and the dealership has repaired a melted gasket in the engine. I have also replaced all my belts and sparkplugs. The sunroof has had it's share of problems of leaking uncontrolallably when it rains and here in florida it has been better to stand in the rain than in my SUV. Now my front reading lights under my rear mirror is leaking buckets of water and the dealership wants to charge me over $500. 00 for a new sunroof after I paid over invoice for this luxury! all of my brake lights in the rear have blown out numerous times to have to replace. This SUV IA the million dollar money pit mistake and do not reccommend anyone to buy! I'm so glad that I am not going crazy and that others have experienced the same and hope to not ever experience my airbags not deploying in an a accident! Mitsubishi will have a huge law suit!!. car   Automatic Transmission Gear Indicator problem of SAAB 900

Engine shut off with no warning and would not restart. SAAB dealer claimed in the first two instances that this could not possibly happen with car running. In first instance, dealer replaced ignition switch. In second instance, dealer replaced gear position switch. In third instance, dealer replaced chafed wiring harness to passenger seat. car   Automatic Transmission Gear Indicator problem of Saturn SL2

The car involved was a 1996 Saturn Sl2. The VIN of this Sl2 is 1G8ZJ5277T_. In attempting to shift car--fortunately while parked--the gear shift suddenly went loose in my hand. Disassembly reveals that the coupling at the base of the gear stick has a plastic clip which has broken. A call to Saturn of honolulu produced the response that they were familiar with the problem as they have been "getting quite a few of those lately". The fix requires new "cables" as the plastic clip which broke is an integral part of the "cable"--which looks more like a bar translating the force of gear stick forward to the engine compartment. I am concerned that if this is happening to many vehicles as he stated it could repeat even after the cables are replaced. If this failure were to occur in traffic or on a hill it could leave the driver in the wrong gear or worse not in any gear and present a safety issue. I have digital pictures of the broken piece which I will be happy to e-mail. This automatic transmission gear indicator problem happened on August 3, 2002.

car   Automatic Transmission Gear Indicator problem of Suzuki Reno

The car involved is a 2007 Suzuki Reno. VIN of the vehicle was KL5JD66Z77_. 1 placing the vehicle in any gear causes this particular problem. My vehicle began to show symptoms at about 30,000 miles. 2 when the vehicle is placed in any gear, a diagnostic code is set that only allows the vehicle to operate in drive or reverse. Lower gears are not allowed to operate when in this mode of operation. Initially the failure was when the vehicle was cold (below 60 degrees f) later the problem occurred frequently when the vehicle was started. The result is very sluggish acceleration of the vehicle which could result in a crash after pulling into traffic. 3 replacement of the "prndl" or park-neutral switch or transmission range switch ( all names for the same part) corrected the problem. Note: the transmission repair shop noted that this was a common failure item on many vehicles and the dealer where the replacement part was purchased had 3 in their shop (for the same problem) at the time the part was purchased. The dealer also told the transmission tech that they replaced about 3 of these switches per week on average. This automatic transmission gear indicator problem happened on Sunday, November 15, 2009.

car   Automatic Transmission Gear Indicator problem of Suzuki Reno

The vehicle is a 2006 Suzuki Reno. Own a 06 Reno with 50k miles on it. Just recently while driving in average normal traffic about 45 to 50 mph the transmission indicator would start flashing and the mil light would come on. During this time any change in prndl would cause loud and harsh shifting as well as severely decreased acceleration ability, almost as if it was flooding. Eventually the mil light would go off or stay on and transmission function would return to normal. This would only last maybe a few hours and then whole scenario would repeat itself. My research has led me to believe it is the transmission range sensor. A problem a lot of Reno owners seem to be experiencing. This is potentially a dangerous situation if for example you come to a stop just before trying to merge into highway traffic and your transmission suddenly starts malfunctioning and your ability to accelerate suddenly disappears. I am in the process of taking it into the dealer for other recall work and inspection. This problem occurred on Sep. 21, 2009.

car   Automatic Transmission Gear Indicator problem of Toyota Tundra

The car is a 2003 Toyota Tundra. Overdrive malfuncioned at 10,000 miles. Randomly the vehicle's overdrive transmission acts oppositely to what shown on the display screen. When "overdrive off" light is on, overdrive gear is still on - turn the overdrive swith on and "overdrive off" lights turns off but the vehicle is still on 3rd gear (overdrive off). Malfunction stops when the engine is stopped. Toyota states this caused by the customer clicking the overdrive switch quickly several times. This is incorrect statement, the overdrive malfunction happens even with one click. Toyota also states this is normal condition as it is designed and the vehicle is safe to drive. I suffer poor gas milage and unsafe condition by transmission acting unexpectedly when malfunction occurs. Engine speed goes up very high and noisy on highways when malfunction happens. Customer is concerned about engine wear from long driving. This automatic transmission gear indicator issue occurred December 29, 2003.

car   Automatic Transmission Gear Indicator problem of Volvo S80

The car was a 2001 Volvo S80. The vehicle identification number (VIN) is YV1TS94D91_. This car was stuck in park. We could not shift the car out of park into drive. We were stuck in a line of traffic and it was a dangerous incident. We repeatedly correctly depressed the button on the gear selector knob and and at the same time depresssed the brake pedal ( we have done this thousands of times on this vehicle from 2001 to present without any problems) . It took over 15 minutes of turning off the enigine and restarting it, turning the steering back and forth to finally get it out of park into drive. We are fully aware of the brake shift interlock safety feature. This incident was the result of equipment malfunction and not operator error. My wife and I each struggled to finally get it from park to drive. This is a real equipment problem that needs to be investigated and corrected. My wife and I both drive Volvos and are experienced Volvo drivers. Any suggestion of operator error is frivolous defense. The failure date was Dec. 4, 2004.

car   Automatic Transmission Gear Indicator problem of Audi A3

The car is a 2006 Audi A3. Reference NHTSA action number: pe09035, recall number: 09v333000 I had exactly the same type of issue occur on my 2006 Audi A3. This A3 has a 2. 0t engine and 6 speed dsg transmission. Today while driving on the highway, the vehicle suddenly and with no warning downshifted and then all prnds lights began to flash. I was able to navigate the car to the right shoulder. It appeared to have only one forward gear (3rd). I was able to drive it to a place for towing. Even reverse was not available. This transmission was recently serviced. I have kept the car well maintained and it was only dealer maintained until recently. This type of failure is ridiculous. Had the traffic not been light, I would have likely had an accident. The downshift was abrupt and caused a violent jerking in the car. The car has not displayed any evidence of harder shifting over time. This is the same gearbox system as in the recalled model years. The recall must be adjusted to include earlier models with the same system. This is a systemic defect. I have found this issue across numerous Audi owner forum websites covering wider model years than listed on this recall. I request NHTSA investigate. It was Tuesday, June 18, 2013 when this automatic transmission gear indicator issue happened.

car   Automatic Transmission Gear Indicator problem of Audi A3

The vehicle involved was a 2006 Audi A3. Vehicle goes out of gears while driving on the freeway for about 20mins in hot weather, this was going about 70 mph. The "prnds" light flash for a quick second and back into gear again. I have various issues with harsh shifts up and down, especially in the lower gears. While slowing down to a stop the vehicle has a hot time going in to second gear and sometime first. It makes a very noticeable clunk sound when it does. From a stop, giving just a bit of gas and the car don't seem to move then it will surge until the speed comes up. While getting up to speed it will try to get into the highest gear as soon as possible, I would be in 6th gear while only going 35mph. There are some safety issues involved and that is why I'm taking the time to file. This automatic transmission gear indicator problem happened on 06/02/2013.
