Brake Light Problems in popular cars

Brake Light problem is a common vehicle problem that happens to most car brands and models. The following is a sample list of Brake Light problems reported in most popular vehicles.

car   Brake Light problem of Chevrolet Cavalier

The vehicle involved is a 2002 Chevrolet Cavalier. Vehicle identification number (VIN): 1G1JH12F12_. Purchased vehicle from dealer 7/12/13 with the following issues: non-working odometer, blinkers, brake lights that frequently "short" out & a non-working windshield fluid function. I was informed by the dealer to take vehicle home & return it the following day for the repairs of all the above notations that were discovered during a test drive. Upon the time of return, I was sadly & rudely approached by the dealer. He stated that he did not claim to fix these issues? on 7/17/13, I filed a "complaint" with the better business bureau regarding this poor business transaction. All of which, I have proof. Despite my endless efforts to correct this issue, nothing significant has been done on my behalf. I have been pulled over a number of times, because of my failing brake lights - which have been replaced on multiple occasions. I have had close encounters of potential dangerous situations, where my blinkers have failed & being stuck "not" knowing how much mileage I have on my car. This is a major safety issue I cannot get resolved & am hopeful that you may assist. This brake light problem happened on July 12, 2013.

car   Brake Light problem of Chevrolet Malibu

The vehicle's vehicle identification number (VIN) was 1G1ZT54884_. Chevrolet Malibu LS 2004 v6. Exterior brake lights not working as expected. In my vehicle the brake lights illuminate when the brake pedal is not depressed, and turn off once the pedal is applied. During this event I was notified by the "service vehicle soon" warning light. In the dark I could see in my mirrors that my brake lights would go on and off with out touching the pedal. My brake lights would not illuminate while pressing the brake pedal. When I got home I had my husband stand behind the vehicle while I pressed the brake pedal. No changed occurred as I pressed the brake pedal. This is extremely dangerous because other drivers will not know when I am truly slowing down or actually applying the brake. Now whenever the "service vehicle soon" warning light comes on I know that my exterior brake lights are not working properly. Since February of 2014 this happens 4 or more times a month. I work second shift, so when I drive home it is dark out. My vehicle could cause another driver to rear end me because they don't know that my exterior brake lights aren't working properly. It was Monday, February 17, 2014 when this brake light issue occurred.

The dealer claims it "burned out" after discovering it during inspection of another problem, however, none of my other vehicles have ever needed replacements for these led lights. After paying $300, for a new brake light bar it worked. It seems to me that it shorted out or may have had wires that became corroded. car   Brake Light problem of Honda Civic

Crash was involved with the Honda Civic. I am only entering lighting on this complaint. It is now apparent to me that most 2007 Honda Civic sedans suffer from failure of the third (high mounted) brake light. This light works intermittently and may not have been working at time that I was involved in a rear-end collision. I also own a 2006 Honda Civic sedan that has the same problem. In my day to day driving, I have noticed that most other Honda Civic sedans also suffer from failure of the third brake light. I feel that this is a manufacturer defect that compromises safety and should be investigated. This brake light problem happened on Saturday, Dec. 22, 2012.

car   Brake Light problem of Honda Civic

The vehicle was a 2009 Honda Civic. The center 3rd brake light stopped working. Since it's an led array and not a normal light bulb it costs over $200 to replace. Because this is a safety issue Honda should issue a recall to replace the defective units. It was Thursday, August 29, 2013 when this brake light issue happened.

The lost of brake lights is a very danger situation for all drivers that could result in crash, injury and fatalities. car   Brake Light problem of Jeep Grand Cherokee

The car involved is a 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee. Soon after taking possession of this vehicle (9/27/13) I noticed that now and again (4/5 times) there would be a hesitation from the automatic transmission when shifting to the next higher gear when accelerating to highway speed. It was so subtle that I filed it under "nothing is perfect", but would keep score. Don't be misled by the low mileage above. That is my new normal. A head and neck injury in 2001 followed by a long overdue diagnosis of severe ptsd by the va left me practically a "house hermit" and driving anywhere involving distance requires hiring a driver. This vehicle was nothing more than my being able to have access to the woods with a 911 button attached to keep the p/a in check. What happened to me was that from a stop sign I turned onto the main highway and was accelerating to 55 when at about 50 the transmission hung, this time it would not release to the next gear, the engine began to struggle until it almost stalled. As unexpectedly as it had hung the transmission shifted, the engine immediately recovered ""with a roar"" and off we went. (extra rpm's, ? computer/fuel pump saw no problem) I'm sure that in those seconds my speed dropped 20 mph's with no "warning", such as brake lights had someone been behind me. Had this occurred entering a busy belt-way, interstate, etc. , you can imagine the possible may-hem. Did some research, got an appointment for service at the dealership and was told (as expected from research) their computer saw no abnormalities and showed me a blank piece of paper to prove it. Asked them to sign a piece of paper saying my drivetrain was "just wonderful" and reaffirming that Chrysler had never heard of any problems just in case I or others wound up dead or maimed from "no problems". I now have a "moral problem" sitting in my driveway and not out in the middle of the woods. The failure date was 11/11/2013.

car   Brake Light problem of Lexus SC400

The vehicle involved is a 1996 Lexus Sc400. VIN of the vehicle was JT8CH32YXT_. On two occasions just before coming to a complete stop at a signal, the car suddenly lurched forward for no reason, and I was unable to control this motion with the brakes, so I quickly put the transmission in neutral, and noticed that the engine was racing at 6,000 rpm. After this occurred the second time, when parking in the garage, I noticed that the engine rpms would change by about 200-300 rpms about every 5th time when just applying the brakes while car was in park. A possible problem could be related to the fact that when I bought the car 2/20/06, I noticed that the rear mounted high brake light led built into the rear wing was not working. The dealer repaired this by locating a broken (cut?) wire in the wiring harness. This repair was done on 3/20/06, and from the time I had bought the car, (2/20/06) there had been no problem until 3/21 when the problem first showed up. The second time it happened in just the same way was the evening of 3/29 while at a stop signal. Each time, I was able to put car into neutral to avoid hitting the car in front of me. I am not quite sure what I did each time to slow the engine back down. It was Tuesday, March 21, 2006 when this brake light issue occurred.

car   Brake Light problem of Lincoln Town Car

The vehicle was a 2006 Lincoln Town Car. On the previous day I had replaced the left side low beam headlight bulb twice which did not fix the problem. Thought it would be a simple fix for a burnt out bulb. Turns out the origional bulb was not bad at all. Took car to dealer for diagnostic check. Problem turned out to be a lighting module ($659. 25 part) not repairable, that had to be programed ($239. 63 fee) by dealer before being reinstalled. This module also affected my brake lights which I was told were not working. If I had been out on the road when this occured instead of my local traffic area I think it could have been a safety issue. I feel this would have been a safety situation since I never knew my brake lights were not working and also not being able to get my headlight to work. What if both headlights had gone out while I was driving at highway speed because of this module. This situation also put me as car owner into the position of not being able to fix a simple headlight problem and turning it into a major car repair ($905. 61 bill). I feel the use of modules to control headlight lighting is a major safety issue. It should not cost nine-hundred dollars to fix a headlight problem. I foresee down the road a whole lot vehicles with these modules having no lights. So much for the modern era. Give me the old style electrical system with just wire and fuzes. car   Brake Light problem of Mazda MAZDA3

The vehicle involved is a 2007 Mazda Mazda3. VIN of the vehicle was JM1BK34387_. The brake light housing (amber lens) was heated by the bulb to such a degree that the lens itself melted onto the bulb. We are not entirely sure when this happened and may have been ongoing for quite some time. Upon inspection by an experienced automotive technician, it was confirmed that the bulbs were the correct model and had been installed correctly. Some of the plastic had melted down onto the bulb itself and could potentially become a fire hazard. This problem impacted both driver and passenger sides, with the driver side appearing more significantly melted. After a quick search on Mazda forums, this appears to be an issue experienced by many owners of 2007 Mazda 3 models, but only those in the hatchback configuration. The failure date was Mar. 7, 2014.

car   Brake Light problem of Mercedes Benz CLK350

The vehicle having this issue was a 2006 Mercedes Benz Clk350. Vehicle identification number (VIN) of the vehicle is WDBTK56G06_. Bought the car in July 2013 third brake light lense fell off. I checked my brake lights with someone pushing the brake pedal and observed the electrical component dangling loose inside trunk third light space but no cover lense. Didnt notice the lense had fallen off until several strangers tailing me told me. I know there is a brake light issue that is being recalled on a different mercedes model and year. I was thinking that perhaps my vehicle might have the same issue. So I googled this issue and to my disappointment found many more Mercedes Benz owners had the same problem as me. The reason its a disappointment because Mercedes Benz vehicles are highly reguarded as the most prestiged vehicle let alone one of the costly cars. Who would have imagined such small overlooked detail came off the assemberly line. As a further insult Mercedes Benz refuse to acknowledge this as a problem and compensate its customers. This issue happened on Saturday, May 3, 2014.

The vehicle is a 2010 Mercury Milan. VIN of the vehicle was 3MEHM0JG3A_. The exact incident date is unknown. The right tail/brake light does not function at all and the left tail/brake light burns very bright like the brake is depressed but its not. This happens when the headlights are on but they function when the headlights are turned off although the right one is much dimmer. I have spoken to the dealership and was told that the entire light assembly would have to be replaced at a cost of 530. 00 per side and there wouldn't be a guarantee that they would last any longer. I have called Ford and made a complaint as well. I haven't gotten it fixed yet since its going to cost me over 1000. 00 and it may go right back out and happen again. I would like there to be some kind of a recall because I have searched online and have found numerous other reports for the same thing. It is a serious safety issue. The failure date was Aug. 1, 2013.

car   Brake Light problem of Nissan Altima

The vehicle involved was a 2008 Nissan Altima. The vehicle's vehicle identification number (VIN) was 1N4AL21E28_. Stepping on brake pedal intermittently fails to activate brake-lights,which also inhibits starter. If brake lights don't work once vehicle is underway that is a safety hazard. I have been repairing thing for 50 years and am 99. 9% sure the pins of the brake pedal switches are hanging up inside the bores, since wedging snow scraper against brake pedal and pushing plungers until they popped all the way out allows starting. Phoning a Nissan dealer's parts department confirmed availability then gave me a price of $39. 17 for switch(ES). Not looking forward to hunching under the dash,I talked to service to find out how much to install. An "improved brake wiring harness"is needed for "rare" occurrences at cost of $238 and labor of $149. When I asked if this might be a recall or under warranty he said"could not make any money" that way. If it is a design/construction problem Nissan should eat the cost. Internet search has some dealer recommending pushing harder on pedal or pounding-pulsing. Some replaced switches showed pitting of contacts{too much current too often?} do dozens of cars have to get rear-ended before action takes place??????????????????????? or does my wife have to have a heart attack because the car won't start and she will lose her job?. car   Brake Light problem of Subaru Legacy

The vehicle involved is a 2005 Subaru Legacy. Rear windshield wiper stopped working causing very limited visibility out of rear window during inclement weather. I discovered the connecting harness on the passenger side rear that controls the rear wiper and brake lights damaged where it passes from the car body to rear tailgate. The grommett does not seem to be serving its purpose and the wiring harness does not seem durable enough. This can create a very dangerous combination. This problem occurred on February 1, 2013.

The car involved is a 2010 Volkswagen Tiguan. While driving headlights stopped working, brake light stopped working, and license plate lights stopped working. Brought in to service and they said fuse box overheated causing a poor electrical connection. They told me it was dangerous to drive vehicle, as if I wouldn't have caught it this early it could have lead to more serious issues like power steering or even brakes to go out. Then on 9/4/2012 battery went dead and had to have it replaced. Then on 10/13/2012 the right side headlight stopped working again, they replaced and worked fine until now. On 11/30/2013, headlight stopped working again, checked fuse box for bad fuse, fuses look fine but car will not start. Having it towed in the dealership. Pretty sure it's fuse box again. The failure date was Monday, Dec. 19, 2011.

The car involved was a 2011 Volkswagen Tiguan. The VIN of this vehicle was WVGCV7AX1B_. 2011 vw Tiguan - lights (headlights, brake lights, signals) all randomly turn off for varying periods of time. The warning indicator in the cabin of the car indicates a light is out. Research indicated possible engine compartment fuse box issue, further investigation confirmed this. A fuse in the engine fuse box appears faulty and has begun melting the fuse box itself. It appears there are numerous Tiguans manufactured between 2009 and 2011 which are affected by this issue. I am currently placing myself and others at risk on the road. I will seek to get the issue resolved but would like vw of America and other drivers to know about the problem before it poses more of a safety concern, or an injury. This brake light issue occurred 10/02/2013.

car   Brake Light problem of Audi S6

I was driving behind an Audi S6 (one of the newer models with full led lighting) at night. I found its led brake lights blindingly bright. The driving lights are very bright by themselves, but they're borderline tolerable, however brake lights when they come on are extremely bright - I could not look at that car when driving behind it, it was too painful to look at. I had to take my eyes off that car and off the road ahead of me as a result of this for extended periods of time. I could not have those taillights within my field of vision, they hurt even when I tried to look away from that Audi. I do not feel safe driving behind new Audis and other cars that use extremely bright led taillights. I could have crashed because when I was slowing down behind that Audi that lit up its taillights when braking I could not look ahead on the road and at the car. I had to brake blindly while briefly looking up for a millisecond or two (and suffering eye pain) now and then to ensure I wasn't going to crash into it. I was not able to constantly maintain the Audi in front of me within field of sight due to severe eye pain it caused me. Is there a law that mandates a safe light output by the headlights? because I find led taillights in general painfully bright to varying degree amongst different carmakers, with Audi having the most severely painful brightness (similar to looking at the sun). The failure date was Tue., Jan. 21, 2014.

car   Brake Light problem of BMW 530

The vehicle was a 2007 BMW 530xi. Vehicle identification number (VIN) of the vehicle is WBANN735X7_. I discovered failures of multiple wires in the tailgate/rear window wiring harnesses. Through research online I have found this is a common problem with this vehicle over several model years - search for BMW e61 tailgate wiring problems. The failures are caused by a poor design where the wires entering the hinge guides (4) for the glass and tailgate are repeatedly flexed at a sharp angle until the insulation, then the copper wire breaks. Safety issues - possible electrical short circuit leading to fires (highest load is for rear defroster); lighting failures (rear high brake light, license plate lamps and others); reduced visibility due to loss of wiper/washer/defroster; rear glass latch opening while underway, possibly resulting in loss of cargo or ingress of exhaust fumes. This is not an easily repaired problem. It would be beyond the capabilities of all but a skilled mechanic with proper tools. I discovered it when the remote lock/unlock using the key fobs failed. As I investigated I found the broken wire, along with several others with broken insulation, some with broken copper strands. This brake light issue occurred 05/15/2013.

Passenger side and high mount light work fine. Left turn signal (which is the same wire as the brake) also works. After being ticketed for equipment failure, had diagnosed and found that the problem was in the multi function switch in the steering column. This switch controls turn signals, wipers, cruise control, etc. Since this occured I have noticed other general motors vehicles with the same or similar problem. This is a safety hazard and I wonder if any investigations have been done on this problem?. It was Jul. 25, 2003 when this brake light issue occurred.
