2011 Subaru Outback. Consumer states unintended acceleration the consumer stated the sudden acceleration problems started shortly after he purchased the vehicle. On two occasions, he came close to having an accident. The consumer believed there was an issue with the pedal arrangement. He stated he realized he was crossing his right leg over his left leg to apply pressure to the brake pedal. The brake power assist amplified the applied force very well, but at times the brake pedal seemed to get too close to the floor board. He found the brake pedal was high when the engine was off and sank to a lower level when the engine was started. The level could get close to the operating plane of the accelerator pedal. On one occasion, he flipped off the cover on the brake pedal and was braking on a bare steel plate. He discovered he was using more natural ergonomic motion and got too close to the right edge of the brake pedal. The distance between the edges of the brake pedal and the accelerator pedal was about three inches. The width of the sol of his size 12 shoe was about 4 1/2 inches. The consumer believed the problem was an engineering design problem that involved the vacuum braking system, the accelerator linkage design and ergonomic. It was Thursday, November 1, 2012 when this brake pedal and linkage issue happened.

The vehicle having this issue was a 2002 Volkswagen Jetta. Over the past few months I have been experiencing difficulty with an intermitent problem with my car. Periodically the car would not accelerate past 10-15 miles an hour resulting in the car going into overdrive. The car was towed twice in two weeks. After the first tow, the dealership could not detect the problem and returned the car to me even though I felt unsafe driving the vehicle. The second time, the car was moving at 40mph and then dropped to 5 mph on a busy highway, where I was close to causing a serious accident. I demanded that the dealership keep the car and continue to test drive the car until they detected the problem, which they finally found. They found a defect in the brake system where the brakes would cease while driving resulting in the complete replacement of the brake booster system and brake peddle, which the dealership claimed was defect from the manufacturer as it is a rare occurance. Approx. $700. , the car is returned although I continue to feel unsafe driving the car. Also, because of this defect, it required me to replace brake pads x2 in a two week period. I am concerned that this defect has not been a recall of some kind. Please advise. This brake pedal and linkage issue occurred 07/13/05.

The car is a 2010 Volvo Xc60. Pulling into driveway, pressed on brake pedal. Foot was on edge of brake pedal, and rubber cover popped off. After inspecting, it appears that the "lips" on the back end of the rubber pedal cover that hold it to the metal pedal are not long enough to grasp the pedal securely. It should wrap around the pedal like a rubber band, but there is so little extra rubber on the back that it appeared that the rubber cover could literally pop off, and that's just what it did. Go inspect yours. This was on a 2010 Xc60 t6 awd with standard rubber pedals. Underneath this rubber cover (the traction on the pedal), is a piece of untextured metal which has zero traction. Driving, this could cause a serious accident. Slightly wet and there is no way to stop if your foot slips due to no rubber on the pedal any more. This brake pedal and linkage problem happened on Thursday, March 15, 2012.
