Engine Exhaust System Problems in popular cars

Engine Exhaust System problem is a common vehicle problem that happens to most car brands and models. The following is a sample list of Engine Exhaust System problems reported in most popular vehicles.

car   Engine Exhaust System problem of Chevrolet Malibu

The car involved was a 2010 Chevrolet Malibu. I have several complaints about this car that I believe to be manufacturer defects. The most serious issue I found today (4/19/2014) when I smelled gas outside of my car. Upon looking underneath my car I found my gas tank leaking onto my exhaust pipe. I consider this to be a recall issue because there is absolutely no damage to the undercarriage of my car. One of the other serious issues I have found with my car include a brake light issue. My car was occasionally showing a "service traction/ esc" error code, which could not be explained by any mechanic or even a chevy dealership themselves. It wasn't until a friend following me pointed out that my brake lights didn't seem to be working right, did I realize I was having an issue. The brake lights do the exact opposite of what they should, but only on the occasions said error code is showing. I looked into the issue online and found this to be a common problem. Chevy has not been able to give me a solution to this problem. The third major safety issue I'd like to point out, I know from experience is not exclusive to my car. When I sit in the passenger seat of my Malibu, among every Malibu I have ever been, the passenger side airbag does not turn on. I am 26 and weigh 94lbs, so I don't know if my size is the reason I do not engage the airbag!? the final defect I had to deal with involved my driver side rim. I had a tiny little hair line crack on the inside of my rim, causing me to loose a lot of air in my tire. I consider this a manufacturer defect because my rim was not damaged in any other way shape or form. I had a hard time obtaining a new rim, because (according to everyone I called) the rim was in high demand. Please look into these issues and consider adding them to gm's current recall list. Thank you for reviewing my concerns. . . Updated 04-23-14. This engine exhaust system issue occurred April 19, 2014.

car   Engine Exhaust System problem of Chrysler Pacifica

The vehicle is a 2007 Chrysler Pacifica awd. We have had multiple issues with this vehicle. Around 60,000 miles the car died several times which was fixed. Then 2/11/2013 the car had a problem with I believe was the fuel line. Car would act like it was going to die and smoking like crazy when pressed gas, smelled like gas. . We got it to the dealer service and the fixed it - cost $1100. 3 weeks later while getting onto a freeway in traffic, I pressed the gas to accelerate, heard a bang like something blew up in the engine, car was smoking in the exhaust and the immediately died. It was towed to the dealer where we were later informed a rod had come loose and put a gash in the engine and oil pan. Called it a catastrophic failure and only fixed at enormous cost. Car dead at 82,625 miles. 5 years old. If this "rod" would have broke loose any other time or while driving faster in middle lane, we could have been killed, since it was rush hour. I had 2 young kids with me at the time. Chrysler is putting lives at risk with faulty products. Purchased brand new, maintained and did all required maintenance through dealer. Had to purchase new car, not a Chrysler. It was Mar. 1, 2013 when this engine exhaust system issue happened.

car   Engine Exhaust System problem of Dodge Intrepid

The vehicle is a 2003 Dodge Intrepid. Driving on the freeway in az the car started to loose power and than trail smoke. . . . As we pulled off smoke rolled out the front of the vehicle. . . Checking the passenger side, there was melting plastic running to the ground and the top of the hood was hot. . Car later burnt before fire department was able to put out the fire. . Time from it lost power to when it was consumed by fire was less than 10 min. . I can only assume a transmission line, power steering line, or fuel line started to leak and started a fire by spraying the fluid on the catalytic/exhaust system on the passenger side of the vehicle. . . Car was a total loss. . I've owned this car for 11 or 12 years. . . It was in good shape. . . We later looked at the car and in the same storage lot was a second 03 Dodge intepid with the exact same failure and brunt front end. . . I believe the two failures are related. . This issue happened on March 6, 2014.

car   Engine Exhaust System problem of Ford F-350

The vehicle involved was a 2013 Ford F-350 sd. 1. Severe engine rattle and then severe shaking of entire truck due to exhaust regenerative system. Truck becomes hard to control on highway and presents danger in heavy traffic situations. First incident was taken in for repair; second incident occurred approximately seven months later and was told by dealer service representative that in order for the exhaust regenerative system to work properly we had to watch for the "cleaning exhaust system" message to appear (which only flashes on for approximately 5 seconds and requires eyes off the road) and then drive an additional 20 miles at speeds above 50 mph for the regeneration system to complete. Unacceptable when living in an area where speed limit is 45 mph and there is only a distance less than 10 miles from one end of our town to the other. In other words, if we are pulling into our driveway and the message comes on, we are to not stop the truck and drive it for an additional 20 miles at 50 or more mph to complete the cycle. Video of one incident of the severe shaking is available if needed. 2. Hard washboard bouncing effect when operating vehicle at 45 mph. Went to the personal expense of ruling out tire issue. Cannot maintain vehicle at 45 mph. It was Apr. 2, 2013 when this engine exhaust system issue happened.

car   Engine Exhaust System problem of GMC Sierra 2500

The car involved was a 2005 GMC Sierra 2500 hd. Exhaust manafold bolts are breaking off for no apparent reason. I have four broken already and an exhaust leak developing. This appears to be a defect in manufacturing. I have a friend with two of the same trucks that the same thing has happened to. There are numerous complaints posted on the web. I have had many vehicals over the years and worked them hard but have never seen a broken exhaust manafold bolt on any of them. This can be a dangerous situation as having exhaust leaks under hood could cause a fire. As far as I know gm has not issued a bulletin or recall on this but there should be some remediation as this is an expensive repair and it is not a failure caused by the lack of maintenance. I have also heard reports of repaired units breaking again in about the same number of miles and having to be repaired again. This engine exhaust system issue occurred Wed., Feb. 1, 2012.

car   Engine Exhaust System problem of Acura MDX

The car involved was a 2010 Acura Mdx. Exhaust entering cabin while under acceleration or under load. The exhaust entered cabin especially when the hvac system was in "recirc" the dealer and Acura were unable to find the problem after multiple visits. I documented that carbon monoxide was building up inside to alarming levels using a real-time industrial gas detector levels exceeding 160ppm while pulling a ~3000 lbs boat on the interstate with a slight head wind. (being measured from front seat/ I have video recordings of this and other documentation showing the buildup after normal acceleration entering interstate etc. The actual problem was discovered when I personally was inspecting the vehicle and found both rear body plugs missing. They are at the rear of the vehicle one on each side that leads to the interior or the vehicle. Once pointed out to the dealer they were embarrassed and fixed immediately. The plugs were loose fitting so they glued them in. The issue now seems to be resolved. I have noticed several other internet postings with similar issues. It is a safety issue in my mind because of the CO if your driving normally against the wind and the hvac is in "recirc" the levels will build up >35ppm especially in high winds or higher altitudes and you can't smell it. car   Engine Exhaust System problem of Acura MDX

The vehicle involved was a 2007 Acura Mdx. The vehicle identification number (VIN) is 2HNYD28427_. My wife went outside of our home to get into her Acura 2007 Mdx to go to work. When she started the vehicle up, it started shaking and blowing out white smoke from the exhaust pipes with an unusual noise. She turned the vehicle off and called our insurance company which sent a tow truck out to take it to the dealer. After the service representative accepted the vehicle and had his mechanic inspect it to see what caused the smoking. The mechanic informed the service representative that the air compressor malfunctioned and caused an electrical shortages. This was the reason for the air compressor why the air compressor were blowing freon into the engine and caused it to smoke when the engine started. We have never miss a service and followed the recommended required maintenance. I ask the service representative what would it cost to have my wife's SUV repaired? the price the service representative gave was an estimation of $1,900. 00 plus labor. The service representative told me there was nothing he could because the warranty had expired and there were no recalls on this issue. Just because there are no safety record on file doesn't mean that the dealer should not look into the hazard. What if this problem occurred while my wife was on her way to work, and all this freon and smoke were released inside her vehicle and caused her to have an accident? my wife and I have purchased 4 vehicles from Acura brand new off the showroom floor. It appears to me that every time the warranty run out our cars, we begin to have mechanical issues which lead me to believe one or two things; either the mechanics are taking short cuts in performing the maintenance or the car workmanship is not what Acura say it is. The way that I feel about my tl and my wife's Mdx that we will never buy another Acura vehicle. This engine exhaust system problem happened on February 1, 2012.

car   Engine Exhaust System problem of Honda Civic

The vehicle is a 2008 Honda Civic. Car started at usual time around 8 am and started vibrating. A very loud exhaust noise started to begin and the car began shaking. The vibrating noise was so loud and everyone in the car could feel the vibration. The front steering wheel as well as the seats were also shaking. Vibrating continued throughout the day and was gone at times when this first began but as days went by it became louder and more obvious by others outside of the car. The car now continues to vibrate not only in the morning but at all times of the day. It shakes at park, drive, and reverse. Car is very uncomfortable to drive and the noise can become very distracting. The car also vibrates so much during these times that I am afraid that something will happen on the highway and am worried about this. Honda dealer will not cover this under power train warranty because the car is now passed the warranty for power train which is 5 year/60,000 miles. Please look into this matter. It seems very common as I researched online and many people are having this issue on their Honda's which most seem after the 2005 models, more common around 2007 + 2008 models. This engine exhaust system problem happened on Wed., Jun. 20, 2012.

car   Engine Exhaust System problem of Honda Ridgeline

The vehicle involved is a 2006 Honda Ridgeline. The vehicle identification number (VIN) of this Honda Ridgeline is 2HJYK16526_. We love our Honda's (3 other), I was so excited about my purchase of a Ridgeline from a la dealership in Dec 2006. My nephew purchased it from Honda finance directly and shipped it to utah for me and I have meticulously cared for and loved my Ridgeline! in December at 93,460 miles my truck lost its perfect harmony . . . It began putting out white/blue smoke. I had an incident where the accelerator took off and I had to shift down and brake real hard to gain control of the speed. I was traveling south on I-15 through salt lake county at the time, speed around 65 mph. Very scary! soon after the "check engine" light came on and when I idled it flashed. I was told that this is probably the moment that the cylinder "blew out". I took it in and was told that my #4 spark plug was "gummed" up and needed replacement, it was suggested that because of the increased mileage I should do a full valve replacement. $785 later, the smoke exhaust was the same and 3 weeks later the light came back on. I took it back and they "scoped" the cylinders and found #4 had "pouck" marks and had lost compression. I needed a new engine. I called 5 auto shops in my general area and found that 2 of them had seen the same issue with a 2006 ridgelne and a 2007 pilot. Both mechanics told me that the owners had taken them to Honda dealerships & Honda had replaced their engines, they "were under 100,000 miles". I did so, $97 later I was told that "no. Honda had deemed my situation not worthy of a warranty. " what?! I can't even trade it in to a Honda dealership to purchase a new one without the $5k reduction in value! I have a history of timely and meticulous care with my local Honda dealership and a mechanic shop, this is not what I expected from Honda! you must have an issue if in my little suburb 2 others have had #4 cylinders go bad just before 100,000 miles. It was Thursday, December 8, 2011 when this engine exhaust system issue happened.

car   Engine Exhaust System problem of Hyundai Accent

The vehicle involved was a 2013 Hyundai Accent. Se model. Supposed to get 29 mpg city. Getting 17-20 city. About Feb 28 I applied for online appointment for Hyundai's los angeles dealer open to the public. Hyundai handbook page 4 says, "regular maintenance and inspection by skilled Hyundai technicians is the key to more efficient operation of the vehicle. " since a past visit saw the dealer and police threaten me with arrest because of my [color] and demand for service, I wrote them in advance I might bring armed guard for protection. My online appointment asked them to check the mpg, steering wheel vibration, motor mounts, carbon in exhaust etc. Arriving Mar 30 about 10:30 am with my own uniformed armed security, a man claiming to be Hyundai security would not give his name, claimed the president of the dealership banned me from the property, that the police were on the way. I showed him my confirmation but he disregarded it. Since he had shut the gate in my face, I was not able to drive my car to the service area. I had planned to look at other cars for purchase at another car dealer next door. I went there with my guard who was with me for meals at two fast food places and no workers or customers complained. About 11:00, still at the other dealer, I was surrounded by six inglewood police cars. The officers said they responded to call of a [race] black man with a weapon. The officers told me if I came back to the Hyundai dealer they would arrest me and charge me with trespassing. Editor: if you read the CA. Trespass laws, I was not trespassing. I feel the dealer made a false police report to endanger me. I also had letter from corporate and the warranty telling me I could go to the dealer for service. Hyundai needs to fire some workers if they do not know how to provide warranty service that car owners are entitled to. Hyundai officials claim they will sue and arrest those who post on youtube about Hyundai. It was 03/30/2013 when this engine exhaust system issue occurred.

car   Engine Exhaust System problem of Mitsubishi Lancer

The vehicle is a 2009 Mitsubishi Lancer ralliart. I was driving from dallas, TX, to el paso, TX in my 2009 Mitsubishi ralliart. Around 3pm and with an outside temperature of approx 99 degrees farenheit (based on the display readout on the car). I noticed a very very strong raw fuel or gas smell coming in from the vents. The air conditioner was on, so I turned it to recirculating air, it persisted, so I turned the air conditioner off, but the very strong gasoline smell, to my amazement, persisted. 2 passengers (my elderly dad 76, and my little sister, 18) also noticed the smell. The smell lasted around 5 minutes, and we were forced to open all the 4 windows, even still the smell was strong enough and kept on going. I started feeling lightheaded, so I told my dad, the passenger that I has to pull over (I literally felt like I was going to faint). We were able to pull over safely and step away from the car. Later I turned the car on and the strong gas smell didnt return for the remainder of the drive. One of my passengers reported a headache that same night. This incident has happened 2 or 3 times before (last summer). Please look into it ASAP. Thank you. Sincerely. This engine exhaust system issue occurred Friday, Jul. 8, 2011.. Read more...

car   Engine Exhaust System problem of Mitsubishi Lancer

The VIN of this vehicle was JA3AJ26E32_. Own a 2002 Mitsubishi Lancer, code p0421, showed after failure of emissions test. I called Mitsubishi motors after finding this code was for a recall in Aug. 05 emr-05-001/003, an emission recall on the catalytic converter, "may have experienced damage to the warm-up cat converter and subsequent illumination of the service engine soon lamp. " Mitsubishi informed me this recall was an extended warranty recall to replace the catalytic converter but that it expired in 2006, also, that it extended the warranty to 8 yrs or 100,000 mi. I explained to them I had not been notified of any recalls on this car. They informed me it was my fault for not informing them I was the owner, so I could be notified. However, NHTSA says owners are notified through registration records. They later stated they had sent me a recall notice in Aug. 2005. I never recieved a recall notice on any of the three recalls for my car. This car hit 100,000 mi on 5/10/2008 which was before the 8yr limit. The service engine light intermittenly started to flash 2/5/2010, at 122592 miles, still before the 8yr limit. We thought it was the gas cap not screwed on all the way because it didnt illuminate continuously untill 06/2011. Mitsubishi has refused to replace the cat, because the car is now over 100,000 miles and the 8yr limit, of the extended warranty. We have performed a tune-up of the engine, oil change, belt replacement, valve gasket replacement, and fluid flush to help remedy the situation. The fan control, and pcm reflash were performed per the other two recalls for this vehicle. It was Jun. 30, 2011 when this engine exhaust system issue happened.

The vehicle having this issue was a 2001 SAAB 9-5. The vehicle identification number (VIN) is YS3EF48Z31_. White smoke exits the exhaust after the car has been driven for a period of time and sits, and is started again. SAAB customer service first told me a TSB would be issued concerning the problem. Poquet auto and morries SAAB both stated "some" Saabs have a problem. According to the csr, the injectors release too much fuel upon startup when the engine is cold and that causes the smoke. When the SAAB idles, it stops. I was informed that SAAB was working on the problem at first. Now I am told, there is no problem. This defect seriously diminishes the overall value of a $40k car. This issue happened on Fri., Aug. 24, 2001.

car   Engine Exhaust System problem of Subaru Legacy

The car was a 2005 Subaru Legacy. The vehicles turbo failed and destroyed the engine. The turbo and engine were all factory original. I replaced the part that I thought was causing problems with the engine and turned the car on and black smoke came out off the exhaust. According to the mechanic shop I took it to the oil union bolts are the cause of the problem to starving oil to the turbo and then the turbo fails. I think it is unclear that these engines have a major flaw in them. Most people have these problems way before the 100,000 miles on the odometer mark. I would need a completely new engine for the vehicle. I did oil changes every 3000 miles and did the recommended services at each time or mileage intervals. This issue happened on Thursday, February 6, 2014.

car   Engine Exhaust System problem of Suzuki XL7

The vehicle was a 2007 Suzuki Xl7. VIN of the vehicle was 2S3DA21747_. Engine trouble light came on Nov. 2009. Talked to dealership they said the light had to be on at time of comp. Diagnostic. Came on again in Dec. 2009. Had diagnostic done at dealer & independently, the code indicated a cylinder misfire. The dealership ordered parts, which took two months to get (Feb. 2010). In the mean time the car was running with a cylinder misfire the whole time causing it to run hot, which created a large burn hole in the front exhaust pipe/converter assembly (which Suzuki attributed to a poor engine ground). The dealership "fixed" the cylinder misfire by replacing some 34 internal parts associated with the cam shaft or crank "tensioner and guide". Two months later (April 2010)the alternator mounting bolt and pulley assembly (recall nhsta # 10v25000)both broke. That is where the dealership notice the hole in the front exhaust and attributed it to a "poor engine ground" when an independent firestone mechanic already told me that hole was a direct result of the engine running hot for so long due to the "cylinder misfire". Now here it is a year later and the same problem is present. I believe there is a manufacturing quality defect issue. This issue happened on 11/15/2009.

car   Engine Exhaust System problem of Toyota RAV4

The vehicle's vehicle identification number (VIN) is JTMBK31VX7_. After the check engine, vehicle stability control & 4wd warning lights displayed on my 2007 Toyota Rav4 with 89,400 miles, I went to my local Toyota dealer for a diagnosis of the problem. Upon inspection and testing, their service advisor stated, "the emissions system has malfunctioned since water has leaked into the emission system & its charcoal canister". The source of the water occurred since the fuel filler tube housing no longer was properly attached/secured to the vehicle. This allowed rwater coming down the side of the vehicle to enter through the fuel filler door by the fuel cap into the charcoal canister. To remedy the problem, the fuel filler assembly along with gaskets, some electronic and the charcoal canister required replacement for the emission system to properly function and to be in compliance with epa standards. The total cost of the repair $1,400 which Toyota would not cover since it was not under recall, nor would they consider paying under my extended 6 yr 100,000 mile warranty since that expired July 5, 2013. I find it incredible that Toyota would not pay for these repairs since they involve emissions as well as a safety issues. Based on my review of various blogs covering Rav4's, this is a common problem and Toyota admits no fault. As with all issues with Toyota they deny they have design/safety issues with any of their vehicles - sudden acceleration, steering suspension & braking. It took me repeated service visits to get them to replace the front steering rack under my extended warranty. I feel my fuel filler assembly and charcoal canister repair is a safety issue since gasoline could easily leak out down the tube on gasoline overfill and cause a fire if it reached the exhaust system. 20 yrs ago I had a similar issue with a Honda which was repaired under a recall at no charge. Your assistance is greatly appreciated. Thank you. This engine exhaust system problem happened on Sunday, November 3, 2013.

The vehicle involved was a 2007 Toyota Rav4. Car began smoking from the exhaust. Engine lights came on. Pulled over. No oil. Filled with oiled, waited awhile and was able to drive car home. Later went to dealer and they suspect possible ring or valve failure and was advised to carry oil in the car and check oil level before and after driving to prevent engine seize. Contacted dealer and Toyota, but they claim since it is after the warranty and because we missed some of our scheduled oil changes they would not be responsible. However, I have read of others with the same problem even though they did all their scheduled oil changes. This engine exhaust system issue occurred Nov. 1, 2010.

car   Engine Exhaust System problem of BMW 325

The vehicle involved was a 2006 BMW 325i. The VIN of this vehicle was WBAVB13556_. There is a clear manufacturer defect concerning the aluminum bolts associated with the valve cover gasket on the BMW 2006 325i's. With research that I have been doing from others, I noticed that this is a manufacture defect and BMW does know about the problem. This can be a safety concern if not corrected quick due to the possibility of oil falling on top of the exhaust pipe and may cause a fire. The defective bolts pose a serious potential risk to the safety of the owners of these vehicles, as well as to other drivers who share the roadway with them. I respectfully request that BMW north America issue a voluntary recall of the BMW 2006 325i's affected by this manufacturer defect. I am not privy to what constitutes a vehicle's defective components to reach a "recall status". It was 04/14/14 when this engine exhaust system issue happened.

car   Engine Exhaust System problem of Jaguar XJ8

I have a 1998 Jaguar Xj8. The vehicle stalls at high speeds, generally after I accelerate over 50 mph. The vehicle is extremely difficult to control and can only be restarted if you bring it to a stop. I had this happen while driving the car in CA. I was almost killed when the vehicle stalled. Jaguar dealer, santa monica, repaired as cyl burn out. Mechanic told me stalling happened frequently with this model. A few years later, san antonio TX on the 183 highway rush hour. Car stalled causing me to swerve next to center median ripping off the engine cover on debris. Jaguar fixed throttle body not engine cover. Service bulletin, defective throttle body. Car ran poorly thereafter. Stalled again year later. Dealer would not repair. $3,000 to fix. . Recently discovered consumers world wide have same problem. Service bulletin repair only short term fix. Jaguar blog in the uk -consumer discovered from a Jaguar mechanic , most throttle bodies needed to be cleaned periodically as the lining bad and build up or deposits would form on the walls of the throttle body and cause it to malfunction. My mechanic had heard of similar problems. I called several Jaguar dealerships. I was told, off the record, that I could clean the throttle and get by, but certain cleaners would cause the lining to deteriorate. I was told the replacement was a rip off, off the record. Using the appropriate cleaner, the assembly was cleaned without removal. When we turned on the vehicle smoke billowed out of the exhaust for several minutes and then subsided. The vehicle now runs perfectly. Jaguar is profiting from replacement of parts that could be cleaned and need top be cleaned regularly. Replacements effective short term only. Your form allows only "s" type equip". This is a Xj8. This issue happened on Jan. 5, 2007.
