The vehicle was a 2005 Chevrolet Silverado 2500. While turning the steering wheel, I could feel a clunking, as though the linkage was very loose. I talked with the chevy dealer, and they were aware of the symptom and it was in the steering column. They said it was cosmetic, but did not affect safety. They said it would cost about $275 to fix it, but it is not clear if that would be just a temporary fix. The car is a 2010 Chrysler Sebring. This car for sure is a lemon. I am attaching the e-mail that I have sent to several people. This car has given me nothing but trouble. Please help me with some much needed advice. Last September 2012, the rack and pinion failed. The vehicle had 52,000 miles on when the first rack and pinion failed. The vehicle was repaired. car   Steering Column problem of Dodge Charger

The vehicle having this issue was a 2012 Dodge Charger. We were driving and the abs and skid lights illuminated on the dash, all the function lights illuminated the steering column locked and the car just halted and stalled. Everything was dead, unable to start and the wipers were going. The wipers were never turned on but kept running despite the car being "dead" wipers in off position . Towed home and then to dealership (dealership has no off hour gate access) told (2) days later the battery was dead on a 2 yr old vehicle, then I received a second call stating the alternator was the culprit. The alternator needs replacement, and no one can explain the rhyme or reason why it needs to be replaced on a 2yr old vehicle. The vehicle also has automatic push start and will not work sometimes unless the remoteless key is pressed to start the vehicle on the start-button (instead of pressing with finger, use the remote less entry- I was told this resets the reading- having to do this once/twice a month). This problem occurred on Wednesday, May. 14, 2014.

car   Steering Column problem of Dodge Caliber

The car involved was a 2007 Dodge Caliber. The vehicle identification number (VIN) of this Dodge Caliber is 1B3HB28C97_. The first signs of a problem were a clicking sound when turning the steering wheel. It did not happen every time, and I did nothing about it until December, when a portion of a strap with electrical wire embedded began to protrude from the upper steering column. It soon began to be a nuisance as the portion grew longer and would catch on the steering position adjustment knob. I grew alarmed when the airbag light came on, and took it to the dealership. They said it was a broken clockspring, and they had to order the part. It cost me over $300 to get this repaired, and now I see Toyota is doing a recall for this exact same thing, a spiral cable assembly that becomes damaged from turning the steering wheel. It is a poor design. Toyota is replacing this with a better part, but I do not think Dodge did that, and I had to pay to get this replaced. I am concerned it could happen again, and believe there should be a recall by Dodge also. It was Apr. 4, 2013 when this steering column issue occurred.

car   Steering Column problem of GMC Yukon

The VIN of the problem Yukon is 1GKEC13Z62_. Purchased a new 2002 GMC Yukon xl, at about 6800 miles the steering developed a rattle, dealer under warranty regreased the steering shaft, this helped for a about a year and it started again. Dealer re-greased with what they said was a new grease that should solve the rattle problem. It has started the rattle again and only has 38000 miles. I understand there is a redesigned steering shaft that solves this rattle problem. Here is the bulletin to solve the poor shaft design, should be a recall but looks like gm is only replacing on a case by case issue waiting for your warranty to be out, at which time they charge you for the poor design steering shaft. They have not been able to correct the problem. On oct 20th I heard the noise 2 more times. I am worried that something is happening in the steering mechanism that could result in serious damage and/or injury. In September I noticed oil leaking. car   Steering Column problem of Honda Insight

The car is a 2010 Honda Insight. A bolt that attaches the steering wheel to the steering column was found to be loose during a vehicle repair. (I brought the car in for repair to a Honda dealership service department because the steering didn't feel right and made unusual sounds during vehicle operation. ) despite my having an extended warranty on the vehicle (and the malfunction being a clear safety issue), Honda refused to pay for the repair performed by a Honda dealership. "valerie," an employee of the Honda service contract department (she wouldn't give her last name), said the steering issue was considered an "adjustment" and therefore not covered by the warranty. The Honda dealership service department, for its part, said the bolt was at risk of becoming looser and impairing steering of the vehicle if the repair were not made. car   Steering Column problem of Hyundai Elantra

The vehicle was a 2009 Hyundai Elantra. Had car in shop for power steering / eps light issue on 3/21/14 (81431 miles). They did an update #c1290 to recalibrate the esp and had to do a front wheel alignment too. The power steering went out again while I was on a busy road around 4pm. I took it back to the Hyundai dealership on 4/8/14 and they re-did the update #c1290. They told me that it is an electrical 'shortage' causing the problem and I would need to replace the entire steering column shaft assembly - costing $1600. I saved up the money and called to get the work done (5/8/14) and the price went up to $1920 now!!!! they told me they can put in a used steering column for $350 - but would only guarantee the work/part for 90 days. Meanwhile I am driving without power steering causing more injury to my arms and neck and very difficult to drive & dangerous in traffic. The sonata was recalled for the same issues. . . . Why won't they recall the Elantra's also?. This steering column issue occurred Apr. 7, 2014.

car   Steering Column problem of Infiniti QX4

The car involved is a 1999 Infiniti Qx4. The vehicle had a crash. On Nov. 4th, 2013, I was driving my child to school. I began to turn left & the car suddenly jerked us to the left & then went out of control. As we were jerked to the left, I felt the steering wheel jerk and then it started spinning like a top. There was no way to control the steering. We slammed into an embankment and my 7 yr old daughter hit her head. Once we got home, I contacted a mechanic who said that he thought there was a recall so I contacted Nissan. They said there was a recall on "some" of the 1999 Nissan Infinitis, but had no way of knowing if mine was one of them. I contacted the mechanic who said to give Nissan my VIN and they should be able to give me more info. Called Nissan back and they were extremely rude and said they had already discussed this with me the previous day. I told them that a mechanic had told me to call back & give them my VIN, so I did. She still would not help. I asked to speak to a manager and she said that I was not a "case" so I would not be allowed to speak to one & she would not give me a name. I stated that we were in accident, & just because we lived through it, did not mean that we did not deserve answers. Once she heard that there was accident, she said that they handle that differently & have to assign a case number to it then. They took my info and the process began. I did not receive a rental from them until the end of Nov, several weeks after the accident. I had pictures of my own, & the steering column is broke in half, which I provided them as well. A clean break all the way through. On Dec 4th I received an offer letter telling me that I had 7 days to accept, or they would take my rental and I would have to claim my car, which had been deemed un-drivable and un-insurable. Basically take this ridiculous offer, which was low, or you get nothing & have to pay for your rental, have no car and an injured daughter. This steering column problem happened on 11/04/2013.

car   Steering Column problem of Infiniti QX4

The vehicle was a 2002 Infiniti Qx4. At the time of the incident, I was taking a left hand turn into a driveway going approximately 5-10mph when I heard a "popping" sound come from the right side of the car as I was turning. After further investigation, the sound would occur when taking a right or left turn, either accelerating or not. I felt incredibly unsafe driving it. Took it for an inspection at a trusted mechanic on 7/29/13, he test drove it and deemed it unsafe to drive. I was told by the mechanic that he could not repair it because it was a manufacturing issue due to a lot of corrosion under the car and the work needed to be done by the dealership. Towed to the dealership on 7/30/13, dealership will not fix it, says it is not a manufacturing issue. Rewind to April 20th, 2011, Qx4 2002 recalled in a number of states including massachusetts, original recall date: 4/20/11 for corrosion problems due to road salt and snow/water. The recall id states the consequences of this corrosion will be that "the strut housing may crack and pull away from the inner hood ledge assembly. This may lead to grinding noises, increased steering effort, and possibly steering column to break, resulting in the loss of steering control, which could result in a crash. " back in the winter of 2011-2012, took the car to the dealership because the vehicle was part of the recall. I was told by the dealership that the corrosion problem was fixed and the car was safe to drive. Now I have a dealership that refuses responsibility for an outstanding corrosion problem, a claim with Infiniti that is going no where and a car I cannot drive because it cannot be fixed. It was Jul. 13, 2013 when this steering column issue happened.

car   Steering Column problem of Jeep Liberty

The vehicle having this issue was a 2006 Jeep Liberty 4x4. The vehicle's vehicle identification number (VIN) is 1J8GL48506_. Key will not release from ignition on steering column due to restricted (degraded range of motion from a subassembly with weakened spring) movement of automatic transmission shifter interlock cable. Vehicle can not be put in park (shifter freely moves through p r n d 3 2) and key will not make the last little turn before release. Seems to be an extremely common occurrence among owners, based on cursory online research. Requires replacement of entire center console shifter assembly with an "upgraded/improved" mopar part to fix the known high failure subassembly (but not available for purchase separately). Inability to place vehicle securely in park would seem to be biggest safety issue, not to mention vehicle security compromised with key perpetually in ignition. I called my dad over who is a mechanic andhe advised it was maybe the battery. I ended up calling on m roadside assistance to have my car towed to a shop to have it looked and and get fixed. The mechanic after a week told me about multiple sinarios it could be. After disconnecting the battery the car was able to start and I drove it to a differnt mechanic for a second opinion. This mechanic advised me to replace the ignigtion swithch and I did and now after two months the vechicle will still not start! so then I looked online searching for an answer and that when I discovered page after page of people online posting in forums looking for answers to the same issues with there 03 Range Rover ,with the exact same issues sounds mechanics telling them the same diagnosis! I have come to the conclusion after talking to Range Rover directlyy that after runniing my VIN the steering column had alrady been repaced before with the previous owner!. And on the forums people were saying that they did the same rrplacements of parts and it either worked in some cases or others the problem came back! so ive concluded that ranger rover should do a formal recall on this part. Steering lock has electric fault is what was stated to me for a price of $1700. + to be repaired. This is the third electrical problem since purchasing the car. car   Steering Column problem of Mercedes Benz C300

The vehicle was a 2009 Mercedes Benz C300. The vehicle would not accept the computer chip key pod and the car was completely disabled, steering lock assembly had an electrical fault. The car was completely locked up, unable to turn ignition on. No advance notice that this was a problem. The car had to be towed to a mercedes dealership for repair, almost 50 miles at a cost of $240. The repair was $707. 00 and involved replacement of steering column lock assembly. This was not covered under warranty by mercedes and they have not announced a recall even though this problem seems prevalent on the internet. The safety issue is having a vehicle that cannot be operated, nor repaired by anyone other than an authorized mercedes dealership. This problem strands the driver at a place wherever the problem may occur. I had the dealership return the faulty part if NHTSA would like to inspect it. The Mercedes Benz steering column lock problem is not from wear and tear, more likely a software problem between the ignition and the key. As a consumer, I feel ripped off to the tune of $1,000 to pay for a problem that mercedes knows about, yet has not initiated a recall to repair the fault. This steering column issue occurred Jun. 7, 2013.

When the recent gm recall occurred I checked the internet regarding Ford/Mercury products. Mercury had a recall for 2005-2011 vehicles for faulty steering columns that could lead to accidents. However, there were multiple reports from 2004 owners with the same issues. Therefore, I didn't to submit this incident to the ntsb. This problem occurred on Monday, August 4, 2008.

car   Steering Column problem of Subaru Outback

The vehicle is a 2013 Subaru Outback. I have owned over 20+ cars ranging from 4runners, s2000, to lancer evo. My 2013 Outback is by far the hardest car to steer on the highway. It wanders to both directions at highway speeds and its difficult to correct it back to center. Some owners have been accused of driving drunk in a outack, Subaru needs to fix this before loosing your most loyal owners! many 2012 2013 Outback owners have been calling this issue stiff, heavy, hard, not return to center steering. Here are my observations after some research: -2013+ new fb25 engine 2nd gen cvt retuned suspension -I also own a 2014 forester with electric steering (drives normal), Outback has hydraulic steering -I test drove couple other 2013 Outback 2. 5i same firm steering -I test drove a 2013 Outback 3. 6r (steering feels normal much softer) -check steering effort should not have more than 6. car   Steering Column problem of Suzuki XL7

The car involved is a 2007 Suzuki Xl7. The air bag is malfunctioning, the lights kept coming on. The dealer I bought the vehicle from agreed to fix the problem if I purchased the vehicle. Well it was too expensive so the ended replacing the pass. Seat airbag module with a used seat from another used vehicle. The steering wheel also makes a whinning noise when turning the wheel. The dealer told me it was the rubber rubbing against the cover. I found out from a ex-employee of the dealer that it was the steering column needing replacement. Since then every other owner I have spoken with says their steering wheel is the same. So it must be a faulty steering column in all these vehicles. Back to the airbag, the following months since getting my airbag fixed, the dash lights no longer came on in the vehicle. I did, however, notice that the indicator light would sometimes say off and sometimes say on if I had a front seat passenger. Several months following this, I started having a problem with my vehicle going dead. I took the cook to have it inspected, everytime I was told that the battery was fine as was the alternator. I started driving watching the voltage meter. Finally, I replaced the battery. I no longer have a problem with the car dying on me, but I do notice that the vehicle voltage still fluctuates from 12. 3 to 14. 3. When the fluctuation occurs, nothing has changed as far as running extra accessories etc. Now my traction service light, stability control light, abs light and service airbag light are all coming on. Researching I have found online from numerous message boards and owners that this is a common occurrence and when repeatedly reported to manufacturer there is nothing being done. Examples are the lights coming on, air bags deploying while driving, vehicle acc. (radio and a/c controls) not working and so on. Is there a way you can investigate this with Suzuki?. It was Jun. 25, 2011 when this steering column issue happened.

car   Steering Column problem of Volkswagen Passat

The vehicle was a 2007 Volkswagen Passat. The VIN of this vehicle was WVWTU73C47_. Car either will not start or shuts off. Display states "steering column lock defect". The steering column locks up, the engine shuts down, and high pitched alarms sound. Car was taken to dealer and repaired under service bulletin 4815, at no charge. This happened in 2011. This week, in 2014 the same exact steering column lock defect reoccurred. Despite this being a known defect among vws, and this being a failure of the previous "fix" vw refuses to do a warranty repair because it is "outside of the 12 month 12,000 mile" warranty on repairs. This is in my mind, a safety issue as the entire steering column locks and the engine shuts down. If this were to occur when the vehicle is being driven, people would be injured or killed. This problem occurred on Wed., Mar. 30, 2011.

car   Steering Column problem of Audi A4

The vehicle is a 2007 Audi A4. I purchased the car in 2013 the key was very difficult to turn in the ignition, after 3 months, it locked up one time in the garage so I just left it as it was and tried the next day. After yanking on the steering wheel and almost breaking the key in the ignition it finally started. A week later I was out shopping and it did the same thing - tow truck driver had no way of even towing the car because the wheels were cocked to the right, key would not come out of the ignition - the steering wheel was totally frozen. A mechanic came and got the wheel to move in turn allowed the car to start I had to leave the car in neutral with the key in it for weeks while we researched this issue. I called the dealer who sold me the car, they told me it was probably the ignition switch needed to be replaced - I asked them why this was not checked before they sold me the car they insisted it did not show up in the diagnostics for a certified preowned Audi I took the car to mechanic. After 7 days tearing the whole steering column out they found the wheel locking mechanism and the key/ignition switch was broken also the airbag light would not go off. After more research the mechanic found reports on the faulty, ignition switch, airbag light and the worst the wheel locking mechanisms which some people had this happen while driving causing accidents. I could not find any recall info and this cost me a lot of money, time and anguish. Audi would not even perform the diagnostic on the car without an up front cost, also the airbag light would not go off after it was taken out and put back in it must be reset with a special Audi tool and they charge for that as well. Seriously I am afraid to drive the car now because if this happens on the highway I could be dead from their lack of concern for safety my Audi is a convertible all wheel drive - should I take out a life insurance policy?. This problem occurred on Wednesday, Apr. 9, 2014.

car   Steering Column problem of Audi A4

The car involved was a 2013 Audi A4. Vehicle identification number (VIN): WAUHFAFL2D_. Car developed notchy feeling when trying to keep vehicle straight on highway roads. Requires constant input in both right and left directions. Similar to trying to correct for cross winds from both sides even though calm conditions. Car had up-grade to steering module at 5k miles which dealer said I had no choice in the matter. Car then went to dealer for steering column bushings and other parts according to their internal recall. Now car has lighter feel but does not rebound to neutral or 12 o,clock position. Does not pull in any direction but rather remains in whatever direction needed to correct to traveling in straight line. Little input to go left, remains traveling slightly left. Same thing correcting to right. Audi aware of problem but has no definite fix. Very pronounced at lower temps especially below freezing which does not help in the adirondacks. Am told this system saves 1 mpg. Not worth the sketchy and untrustworthy behaviour . This problem occurred on February 20, 2014.

car   Steering Column problem of BMW Z4

The car was a 2005 BMW Z4. While driving on the straight highway at a normal speed I noticed the car began to pull to the right. In order to correct, you would have to pull the steering wheel to the left causing the car to sometimes over correct with a jerking sensation and pulling to far to the left. Car was taken in for repair. After diagnostics I was told that it was a problem with the steering column electric motor and you could not just replace the motor, but would have to have the entire steering column replaced. I did have the steering column replaced with good results. The new column was ordered by my repairman from BMW. My worry is if the last column was defective, will this one be also. It was 12/23/13 when this steering column issue happened.
