car   Tailgate Latch problem of Honda CR-V

The car is a 1999 Honda Cr-v. 1999 crv. My wife and I purchased the car new from anderson Honda (now bloomfield Honda; bloomfield hills, mi). My wife drives the car to and from her office. The vehicle now has 70,000 miles on it. It has performed mostly perfectly. About six months ago, the rear door latch would not close securely. I would have to manually set the latch mechanism prior to slamming it shut to secure it. I made arrangements to have the dealer check and correct the problem this week. They replaced the mechanism and charged me $173 ($40 for the part and $133 labor). They gave me the "old" part to examine. I am a graduate mechanical engineer and experienced in automotive corrosion issues. I was shocked at the condition of the handle assembly they replaced. It was in an advanced state of corrosion to the extent it was "frozen" shut due to corrosion. I have two issues with this: 1. The location of the latch is mostly protected from the external elements and should not have corroded this much. I keep the car garaged. In the winter, I take it through a car wash perhaps twice/month. In other seasons I wash the car by hand also about twice/month. 2. This is either a design problem or a quality problem. The reason I am calling it to your attention is that a safety issue may result due to the failure of the back door to latch securely. Things and kids might fall from the rear door suddenly opening while the vehicle is being driven. You might want to look into this. It was 10/10/05 when this tailgate latch issue occurred.

car   Tailgate Latch problem of Mercedes Benz M Class

The car involved is a 2001 Mercedes Benz M Class. The vehicle had a crash. Vehicle identification number (VIN) of the vehicle is 4JGAB54E21_. Just as reported in consumer reports, electrical systems failed on this vehicle causing all safety systems (ie. , brake assist, safety belts, air bags) to fail. The problem caused two accidents last year when the 4,400 lb. Vehicle could not stop. Other electrical systems are also failing. Further, the rear gate latch was not locking and the dealer never verbally told us when we picked up the vehicle from being serviced, nor did they ever ask if we wanted it fixed. We just found out about this. One would expect more from a mercedes product. After the truck was "fixed" twice, we then paid to have it gone over ($300) and found the problem with the safety systems which had been noted as being fixed previously. It was a $100 stop switch. Meanwhile, we will pay higher insurance rates for the next three years. Mercedes USA should have recalled these vehicles for the electrical problems, but they just brushed it under the rug. I thought we were buying a quality product. I guess not. This issue happened on Monday, February 28, 2005.

car   Tailgate Latch problem of Mercury Villager

The vehicle involved is a 1999 Mercury Villager. The VIN of this vehicle was 4M2XV11T2X_. If there is anything just even slightly hanging over the back hatch when it is closed it will not release (open). A recent incident occurred when I had a piece of cardboard from a clothes hanger hanging over the edge of where the back hatch closes. It would not reopen. I took it to the dealer and they couldn't get it open. I finally pulled the cardboard out, piece by piece, and then the hatch would open. It has done this with clothing -- shirt sleeve, blanket, pencil, etc. If something is on the edge of the door hatch floor, and gets stuck in the hatch, the hatch will not open. From a safety aspect, if a child or someone else's finger got slammed shut into the hatch, you would not be able to open the hatch to get the finger out!!!! it does not have to be something thick, nor does it have to be by the latch -- in fact it is never by the latch because the latch is on the sides. The cardboard from the hanger was the circumference of a finger. No one could get it open -- the cardboard had to be ripped out from under the hatch. This problem occurred on Sunday, July 20, 2003.

car   Tailgate Latch problem of Cadillac Cadillac Truck

The car involved was a 2002 Cadillac Cadillac truck. I have a 2002 Cadillac ext pickup truck. Similar to the chevy avalanche. While driving on a hiwhyway I hit a small pothole. My tailgate popped open and both cables that prevent the tailgate form lowering to far ,broke and the taigate fell off the truck while traveling 55 mph. I was umaware that I lost the tailgate until about two miles after the pothole, because I could not find a safe place to pull over. Once I pulled over, I realized my taigate was missing. I called 911 to report the incident since this could have cause a serious accident having the tailgate laying somwhere in the middle of an interstate highway at night. I also believe the latch for the taigate is faulty since this was not the first time the talgate has opened. I reported it to the dealer when I first bought the truck in April 2002. They adjusted the latch but the probelm persisted. I never brought it back for the problem thinking that this was just going to be a minor inconvenience of owneing the vehicle. This problem occurred on Feb. 7, 2003.
