car   Universal Joint problem of Ford F-550

The car involved is a 2011 Ford F-550 sd. The VIN of this vehicle is 1FD0W5HT4B_. This complaint is a follow up to your reference #521328. It concerns an undelivered emergency vehicle that plastisol composites, na, 101 gerald moses drive, groton, NY is building for meredith hose company, 100 main st. , childs, PA 18407 and being paid with fema funds under a federal grant and is trying to force a vibrating drive line problem vehicle on meredith or sell to another fire department without telling that fire department of the drive line vibration so they can evade the penalty clause of the meredith contract. The vehicle is now over 930 days late due to poorly engineering the drive line after installing a pto in the drive line to power the rear mounted pump. On numerous occasions, plastisol workers brought this vehicle to meredith to be inspected for acceptance but on each occasion numerous defects were noted including cold welds, loose parts, poor assembly, (I have pictures of all these problems for your investigator) and the most serious, a drive line vibration that begins at 40 mph and gets worse. Plastisol workers admitted theyu have no engineer assisting them to resolve this problem and don't know what to do. They asked meredith members if we had ideas how to resolve the drive line vibration. This is equivalent to NHTSA recall campaign id # 10v092000 of sutphen vehicles. I would like you to investigate this vehicle and determine if the drive line vibration is safe and the vehicle is road worthy and won't cause the failure of the universal joints and a crash which would jeopardize the lives of the firemen or the general public. I would like you to inspect all welds of the vehicle cross member the pto is attached to and determine if they are within industry standards or poorly welded and unsafe. I would also like you to investigate all trucks produced by plastisol for poor welding and drive line vibration. This issue happened on 05/16/2012.

car   Universal Joint problem of GMC Suburban

The car involved was a 1997 GMC Suburban. The shaft in the power steering pump busted in two as my husband was driving into a curve @ 60 mph. He was able to keep from crashing. But if I would have been driving it I wouldn't of been able to steer it. My husband walked in the house white as a ghost. The dealer wanted me to drive it in 10 miles on a curving road with no power steering. I tried to drive it impossible for me to do. The brakes wore out and were replaced a second time (front) @ 36000 miles. The rotors were replaced, had been 10,000 miles since last brake job. The rear brakes needed readjustment again at 43200 miles the pedal kept going to the floor and was soft. 11/98 began having more electrical problems with the rear fan blower would not turn off and will run the battery dead constantly. 1/99 both front and rear u-joints were bad, had replaced the car was wandering even worse than it used to they could not find cause. The front differential was leaking and front brakes need replacing again. 2/16/99 the transmission went out in the vechile at 53174 miles. I drove the car 3 miles into town the rpms started going up to 4000rpms wasn't shifting I stopped and parked I tried to back up it started whinning and clunking and wouldn't move. Three miles earlier I backed out of my garage with no hint of trouble 3 miles later I am stranded with two babys. My husband contacted gm they refused any assistance. I continued contacting gm through other avenues I called roy roberts one of the vp explained I had some safety concerns with the Suburban. I was told he would return my phone call, no return call ever received. I finally found a factory rep. That is looking into the problem but I don't hold out much hope that gm will respond to our concerns. Every time I have talked to a gm rep. They tell me no one else has these problems, but according to your records lots of people have had similiar problems. I have all records and receipts and would love to go into more detail with you. car   Universal Joint problem of Jeep Wrangler

The vehicle involved was a 1998 Jeep Wrangler. The VIN of this vehicle is 1J4FY49S2W_. Rear drive shaft sheared in two at a weld joint located between the shaft main tube body and universal joint part. The failure appears to be associated with an improper weld seam (weld on apparently a third of the circumference of the shaft tube appears not to have been completed). I don't know if the welding process was done manually or by machine and if by machine how many other shafts are similarly affected. I will mail a more complete copy of a write-up of the incident as well as photographs (I sent Chrysler. I contacted Chrysler and they have not followed up on the incident (other than a voice mail acknowledging receipt of a letter from me and they would look into the matter. That has been close to 5 months of no response. It was 10/07/2013 when this universal joint issue happened.

car   Universal Joint problem of Jeep Commander

The car involved was a 2006 Jeep Commander. My wife reported a strange thumping sound from under the car. She said it began after dropping children at school and going over a speed bump at the school. Something she does every day. Upon inspection I found the driver side emergency brake cable was interfering with the rear universal joint on the driveshaft. The cable was kinked and being cut by the rotation of the driveshaft. There was also abrasion of the gas tank splash guard. I have no doubt if this happened at highway speed the cable would be cut in half and possibly wrap around the driveshaft causing the driver side emergency brake to apply and lock-up the wheel resulting in a rollover. The gas tank could also have been punctured if the cable was pulled by the driveshaft. Somehow the normal action of the vehicles suspension was able to place this cable in contact with the driveshaft. The rotation of the universal joint caught the cable pulling it into the rotating shaft. I consider this a class 1 defect that should be corrected with a model recall. Normally the emergency brake cable is routed off to the side and not directly over the differential. What were they thinking? Chrysler needs to devise a supplemental attaching point that will ensure the cables are not able to contact the driveshaft even under extreme off road driving. I have a full set of photos available upon request. I have ordered a new cable but the part number is on back order. This indicates there is a problem when the part cannot be stocked due to high demand. This cable should last the life of the vehicle without question. Nhtsa is there for the public. It exists on public taxes. It is not there to shield corporate mistakes and short cuts. I feel that NHTSA is not operating within the public trust if it allows defects to be ignored. It was Friday, Nov. 15, 2013 when this universal joint issue occurred.

car   Universal Joint problem of Land Rover Discovery Ii

My wife was driving our 2000 Land Rover Discovery Ii (with 50,000 miles) on MD highway 15 with my three children when she heard a loud noise and the vehicle came to a slow stop. The car was still running, but would not go into gear. She called for a tow and we had the car diagnosed at a local mechanic. When I found out what happened I was absolutely astounded. The vehicles universal joint failed causing the drive shaft to fall from the transfer case and crack the transmission. This car had been serviced and cared for extremely well-it was considered to be in excellent condition. A car with 50,000 miles should not have the universal joint fail. The mechanic was very clear in stating it was definitely a manufacturing flaw. At the time of the failure, my wife was on the off ramp traveling at 15 miles an hour-if this would have happened at normal highway speed, the outcome would have been quite different; I am lucky no body was hurt. I immediately had it towed to Land Rover bethesda where I was sure Land Rover would assist in the repair of such a catastrophic failure. This failure was diagnosed at the Land Rover dealer as extremely odd and they could not find any reason for the failure. Land rover also refused to take any responsibility for the failure. They refused to help with any financial support and showed no concern for my families safety or the safety of any of their customers. This vehicle has a 50,000 warranty, although it was past the 4 years-Land Rover should have backed up their product and investigated the issue more thoroughly. I was shocked. I have been a loyal Land Rover customer for 15 years, but I have absolutely no faith in their product after this incident. I will never purchase another Land Rover again. I am very concerned for any families who own this year and make of vehicle and hope that this will be investigated further. I feel that this could be a possible recall item. The failure date was Friday, Jan. 26, 2007.

car   Universal Joint problem of Nissan Xterra

The vehicle having this issue was a 2006 Nissan Xterra. On Feb. 8th my wife and I were moving into a new place just miles away from our old home. When cruising in between 40-50 mph the vehicle was experiencing extreme vibration in the rear end of the vehicle. It was then that I assumed it might be a universal joint and/or the drive shaft. So when I had the money I brought the vehicle to aamco transmissions to have it checked out. I had to drop it off but later that afternoon the mechanic called me and told me it was the drive shaft and the frontal u-joint. He replaced the u-joint and re-balanced the drive shaft. I thought the problem was solved but just a few miles down the road I realized it hadn't. So I brought it back and they took a second look and told me it may be two things. Either the torque converter is bad or the coolant hose busted and the antifreeze was draining into the transmission which would cause the transmission to blow out. They then told me to fix the transmission would cost me around $6,000 which to me is worth more than the actual vehicle. When I got home I did a little research and found that sure enough the antifreeze was leaking into the transmission. The antifreeze looks like a green apple milkshake if you can imagine. I don't know what to do because I know that there are no recalls for this issue nor warranty coverage. Hundreds of people have complained about this exact issue. I'm at a loss, and now there's absolutely nothing I can do with my only transportation. The failure date was Friday, February 8, 2013.

Sunday 10/10/04 I noticed spots on the side of my car, and after crawling under it I noticed that my cv joint boot had split. This is after 67000 miles.
