2001 z71 1500 Silverado chevy. The gears in the rear end shattered as I crossed a busy commercial street into on coming traffic. No crash incurred. This truck is just off ext. Warrt. 4year/100,000 mile. The truck has 82,800 miles on it. I have had this truck to the dealer 3 times complaining of a load noise coming from the rear end. This truck has had over 6,000 dollars of warrt. Work. Not to mention what I have put out of my own pocket. I am a self employed person, and without a truck I can not make a living. It has been at a repair shop now for 6 days!! I know I am not the only person out there with the same problem. Gm fix my truck.

I was driving home one night in my 2000 z71 when I noticed a banging sound coming from the rear. I thought it was the air compressor in the bed of the truck moving around. When I determined that was not the source of the sound, I took the truck to a friends garage where we lifted the rear and removed the rear-end housing cover. Upon inspection of the differential we noticed that the retention bolt had broken and the cross pin fell out. This in turn caused the spider gears to "explode. " I purchased and installed a new differential, $500. 00. I still have a "ticking" noise coming from the rear. I believe that is due to a missing tooth on the pinion gear caused by the cross pin. Now I have to order a new ring and pinion gear set, $300. 74,000 miles. 14,000 over warranty. I found out that this is a fairly common problem in these z71's.

The vehicle was taken to the dealership for inspection. Upon inspection, the dealership replaced the steering shaft however, the problem still exists. The manufacturer was alerted. Updated 3/9/2006 - left front axle front seals leaked. The consumer heard noise in the rear end. The power steering pump flow control was replaced. The body control module was replaced. The rear-end in my 2002 Chevrolet Silverado has failed three times since I bought it. The truck now has almost sixty thousand miles on it but the problem first occured around 36,000. The first two repairs were made at cranberry motors in machias maine. The first was made without incident, but the second repair was not so easily delt with. After much debate, it was paid for by gm. Now some nearly twenty thousand miles later, the rear-end went again. Gm refused to pay for this repair and after another run-around I took my truck elsewhere. (to a mechanic that I knew was reliable and would charge me a fair price. ) the rear-end has now been replaced for a third time but I believe that the stock rear-end components are over-priced and unreliable and would like compensation for the most recent repairs, but I know that it will be a fight all the way.

At 36,900 miles I had the rear and front pinion berrings replaced on my drive train. I also replaced the tires which were worn out. The vehicle is not driven much (4. 5 years old) as indicated by the mileage. I also experienced my accelorator being "stiff" when I attempt to depress it. I think gm needs to look into their shoddy transmission components. I also had the rear seal replaced at approximately 10,000 miles.
All attempts to remove and recondition/replace the front differential to drivable and mechanically safe four wheel drive condition were unsuccessful. (nar).

I purchased this truck used with slightly over 26,000 miles on it with the remainder of the original 3yr/36,000 mile bumper to bumper warranty. Since the purchase there has been a popping and ratcheting sound coming from the rear end. The differential unit was improperly operating. Tried for 22,000 miles to get the dealer to replace the differential unit but was told several times that the unit was fine and the noise was to be expected. When the truck reached 40,000 mile the differential became completely inoperable. Just over 27,000 miles later the differential exploded destroying the entire internal axle assembly. The dealer still refuses to help. The dealer refused to fix the problem for the orignal owner and is still refusing to fix the problem. I have contacted Chevrolet customer service and they are trying to resolve this problem. I really did not appreciate the way the dealer has treated me this entire time. They treated me like I was some dum punk kid that just walked in off the street. I should not have been treated this way nor should I or anyone else have to put up with this kind of service.

Dealer refused to replace mirror even though truck under warranity and I have additional coverage.
Wheneve the truck climbs a slight to heavy incline at 35 to 40 mph it sound as though the drive trane is going to drop out from under the truck. The dealer tells me after 5 repair visits that this is normal and within gm tolerances.
On three (3) separate occasions over the past two years accelerator pedal has become very difficult to depress, enough so, that I became apprehensive to accelerate in a parking situation, so that I would let the vehicle pick up speed on its own until I was out in an open area. The dealer has "cleaned " the throttle body assembly on each occurrence. After the last service he charged $65. 00 for this service. Upon checking your website I see that this is not an isolated situation. I feel that the manufacturer should be made aware of this potentialy dangerous problem, and that a "fix" should made available at no charge to correct this problem. In regard to the second problem, I was very surprised, and disappointed when $1500 in repairs was necessary to repair the ring and pinion assembly in the rear end. The servicing dealer in all of these incidents was not the dealer that I bought the vehicle from, but it was tom gibbs Chevrolet, bunnell, FL . (386) 437-3314.
I am planning on turning this vehicle in on the lemon law. No safety defect listed witin summary.
