Frame Rust Problems of Chevrolet Silverado

The contact owns a 2002 Chevrolet Silverado. The contact heard an abnormal noise coming from the front end of the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the frame was rusted and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. I was having the exhaust changed when I was notified that one of the cross members for the frame had rusted completely through and needed to be repaired. It has been repaired, but I was informed that excessive rust is in various locations on the rear of the frame and will need to be watched closely. Keep in mind that these cross members support the fuel tank and if one would break, it looks like it could cassette fuel tank to fall off. The truck has 100,500 miles on it, which is not excessive for the year. The truck spent most of its life in michigan, but now resides in illinois. I have read several forums having the same complaints for the 99-2007 model year vehicles. There are several holes placed on these cross members by the manufacturer that allow moisture in, with no place for the moisture to go once it is place. I am sure there is also a lack of proper paint application and even poor steel that is likely causing the issue. Just as Toyota has done, chevy should offer a recall for excessive rust on the frame. The Toyota tundra recall offers a new frame for any tundra with a rust hole 10mm or larger. Why isn't the NHTSA investigating this further? this a serious safety concern and also considerably lowers the value of the vehicle. Gm and chevy need to be held accountable for their decisions when designing and manufacturing these vehicles, just as Toyota took accountability for their decisions.

Frame rust. All parts connected to frame. Parts holding tanks etc. Excessive rust. Bands cables lines. Excessive rusting.

The 16 inch spare tire wheel fell out from underneath the truck while driving. After taking truck to replace spare the spare tire hoist cable had broke. The cross brackets were rusted and beyond repair. The end of truck frame itself is rusted away. I see many issues coming because of excessive rust.

I'm really disappointed in how my truck is rusting. It has the amount of rust that I would expect to see on a truck after 7 - 10 years. The truck's underbody including the frame is rusting everywhere. For a truck that has only 6,000 miles on it this is ridiculous. Whatever was sprayed on the frame is just peeling off in chunks. I had the dealership in anoka, main motors look at this when I got an oil change today and they agreed the rust is excessive but gm has told them to do nothing about it based on pi0281d. Gm claims this is supposed to be the most rust resistant truck ever.

My 2012 Silverado LS has 22,000 miles. It is a shame because it is a beautiful truck, but the frame looks terrible. It is not a little rust here and there. The rust is literally all over the frame. There is more of the frame with rust than without. The frame is very easy to see. Unfortunately for gm, my truck is a rolling billboard and the rust is getting worst every year.

Similar to NHTSA campaign id ea11001, brake lines rusted through on frame behind driver side front wheel. Frame/underside of vehicle is very rusted for vehicle's age/mileage. Chevrolet dealer estimating $2,700 to replace with stainless steel lines. Luckly, no cars/people were in front of truck when brake lines burst and greatly reduced braking power/increased stopping distance.
