1 Steering Rack And Pinion problem of the 1999 Chrysler LHS

Failure Date: 04/06/2006

Vehicle steering would start pulling to the right and then the left. Noise coming from front end and very loud at times while turning. And sometimes would not turn it would lock up no control then you would get control of the steering. We had car into the dealer and they could not find a problem. Vehicle then started getting were it was hard to turn left ,it was like the power steering would quit and then start back . Vehicle would turn right no problem. We had this checked again,it was under warranty. The dealer said the could not find any thing wrong. I hit a deer ,when I tried to turn to miss him steering locked up would not turn. Then I had a accident where I hit someone in the rear. I tried to miss as I realized they were stopped and the steering would not let me turn . I was not charged with following too close due to vision obscured by the sun. I would have avoided the wreck if the steering had not of locked up I had no control. I was not going fast . The vehicle kept getting harder to turn and they still could not find a problem . Now the warranty is out and vehicle was check by another mechanic and he told us it needed rack and pinion . This was what we complained of, and they should have fond the problem. The car noise got louder, and they said it was nothing, and all along this was going out. Currently, warranty was gone. They covered this just to pass the warranty out.

2 Steering Rack And Pinion problem of the 2000 Chrysler LHS

Failure Date: 08/25/2005

I was driving my 2000 Chrysler Lhs and the steering failed. I could not turn the car to the left. My major concern was that my 16 year old daughter was using this car to practice driving for her motor vehicle test. If it was her that was driving the car she would of been hurt or killed. I have only 55,000 miles on this car. It had 3 owners all in my family. I asked Chrysler and the dealer to cover the $800 repair bill. They of course refused. I contacted Chrysler customer service and they refused and were very rude. I contacted the tufano dealership they contacted Chrysler and still refused. Claiming the mileage was too high. There are may complaints regarding this issue. I am just look for reimbursement. I will not stop until I am satisfied. Can you help.

3 Steering Rack And Pinion problem of the 2000 Chrysler LHS

While driving at normal highway speed the steering needs to be constantly corrected. The dealer analysis requires the replacement of the rack and pinion assembly due to internal looseness. The vehicle only has 54000 miles. Surely the durability should be better on a vehicle that is driven only occasionally for long trips.

Complaint received via e-mail. "steering is extremely loose, flimsy feeling and over-sensitive. Steering will also usually jerk when driving over bumps, accelerating or braking. Steering assembly feels like it violently jerks over heavily bumpy areas. Vehicle is sometimes difficult to control due to it being really loose, flimsy feeling steering that moves way to freely. 12 Steering Rack And Pinion problem of the 1996 Chrysler LHS

Failure Date: 08/12/2002

In January 2002 a Chrysler certified mechanic put bushings into my steering mechanism. I say put them there because the previous ones (less than 2 years old, had compeltely dissintegrated. In August of this year my husband was approaching the end of a freeway. When he braked to slow down, the bolt on the d side fell off and the steering mechanism fell apart. He was travelling approximately 55mph and had absolutely no control over the car at the moment the steering mechanism fell apart. It is a miracle there was no accident, injuries or deaths as he was swerving from one side of the highway to the other. The d side wheel was completely independent of the steering.

Steering gear failed by leaking steering fluid on inside bushings on tie rods. Bushings degenerated and suddenly had substatial play. Caused steering wheel to have about 4 inches of play and made car difficult to keep in the road even at low speeds. Car would veer left then right - causing oversteering just to keep it straight. Cost of repair has been estimated at $2,000. Dealer (jim cogdill Dodge) says car is not drivable in current condition.
