The contact owns a 2002 Chrysler Pt Cruiser. While driving 35 mph, the contact heard a noise and noticed smoke coming from the front passenger side of the vehicle. In addition, the steering wheel became difficult to turn. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who diagnosed that the power steering belt fractured and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired multiple times; however, the failure recurred. The vehicle was taken back to the mechanic who diagnosed that the power steering switch needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The contact was aware of NHTSA campaign number: 04v268000 (steering); however, the VIN was not included. The failure mileage was 142,000.

I was driving on the freeway when the engine light came on (which it never had before), and within less than a minute the car ceased up, lost power and died. I was able to make it to the side of the freeway as it started puttering before ceasing completely. This incident has happened at least four more times since original date. I had the motor tested at the auto body shop and the said the cam sensor needs checked but the engine is burning my oil up and since this happened and has had to have oil put in 3 times since then in order to make it run when it stops. Just last month I spent over 500. 00 replacing the radiator and power steering lines which I was informed was part of a recall on this vehicle but was not covered since it didn't apply to my VIN #. I am scared because I have children I drive with and because I cannot afford to keep repairing this vehicle, which is my only means of transportation. The vehicle was paid for in cash in full and has no recourse from the dealer or so I was told.

The contact stated that while the vehicle being inspected, it was discovered that the suspension needed to be repaired and that the power steering needed to be replaced. The vehicle was included in NHTSA campaign numbers: 04v268000 (steering) and 08e033000 (suspension) however it was informed that the recalls had expired. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 81,000.

I had just put fuel in my car and was driving across a parking lot. I proceeded to park my car and noticed smoke rising out of my steering wheel and a burning smell. My lower set of lights ( fog lights) had turned on by themselves, which is odd since they haven't been working for at least two years. In order to stop the smoking in the steering wheel, I had to remove fuse #8. Same set of lights have turned on before a few years back draining my battery since I couldn't turn them off with their switch. In addition, my headlights turn off automatically at random while I'm driving and my clock lights go out frequently. Headlights have gone out on me 5 times over the past 3 years. I try not to drive much at night as a result.
Center of steering wheel (where airbag is located) became so hot that it could not be touched with your bare hand. Pulled over and got out of the vehicle and turned vehicle off. Waited until it cooled down to normal temperature then got back in and restarted vehicle and moved seat all the way back from the steering wheel just in case. The heating phenomenon did not recur in the short drive home (5-10 minutes). Has not happened again. Scheduling a visit to local dealer to determine if this is a known problem. Nothing found on Chrysler recall information and email to Chrysler got no response. This is a 2001 Chrysler Pt Cruiser with package 28g that included supplemental side airbags.
Made a right hand turn and heard a metal klunk noise, proceded another block - from a stop made a left hand turn onto a hiway - at that time a very loud metal noise, no brakes, no stearing, no contol of veh at all. Somehow managed to get to side of road without rolling veh, wheels turned opposit directions, had veh towed to shop. Engine cradle was rusted out on right side and gave way, which disconnected stearing control arm and axel from the wheels, mechanic - stated dripping from air conditioner had rusted the parts on that side only - rest of under veh was in good shape - stated had seen this in pt's often - a known Chrysler issue with the Pt Cruisers and the neons also - which have the same platform. If had been going at hiway speeds - would have been a very bad, possibly fatal accident. Own two of these vehs - took the second veh to have inspected (only has 50,000 miles) - has the exact same issue. Researched the pt crusier fourms and found many complaints on the same issue. Chrysler is non responsive - this should be recalled as is a deadly problem. Vechicle is unrepairable.
When I first bought the car the steering wheel was loose that was in 2007 they fix it . . . Now in 2014 its loose again it feels like the bolt is coming loose again I hope I don't get in a accident I feel this is something Chrysler should fix this is dangeris this is the 2nd time now the friest thie was at 39,000 it has now 154,00.

As stated in a previous complaint. The gauges start lighting up and the vehicle shuts off, I have found that if you wiggle the key it can stop what is happening. It is very dangerous because the vehicle loses all power when this happens and when traveling on the highway or trying to pass this could cause serious injury. I received notification that this item has been addressed by your office for other Chrysler and Dodge vehicles but the recall did not include the Pt Cruiser. Nhtsa campaign id number: 14v373 sounds identical to what my vehicle is doing. I also have video that shows what the vehicle is doing. Please advise if the pt crusier is going to be included in this recall and if not and I pay to have the ignition switch replace will I be refunded in the event that the Pt Cruiser is included in the recall. This is a very costly repair. In addition I would like to address the horn on my vehicle. It has been repaired previously by the Chrysler dealer but does not work properly. When depressed it sticks or doesn't work at all without alot of force. Thank you for your time and consideration.

I purchased a used Pt Cruiser that drove fine until the components near the power steering house touched and created a major leak and caused my car to smoke very badly close to causing a fire while driving.
For a month I have been puttin gpower steering fluid in my pt cruser and went to get new tags and could not pas emissions because of a power steering problem. I was so upset I went to the salon and was talking about how I need to get my vehicle checked . . A woman in the office told me about this website. I checked adn ther is a recall for this problem with my car. How do I get it repaired? will they honor it ? is there a list of special dealers? help I need to pass emissions to keep my car legal.
I bought a car from north coast auto mall and it had a lot of suspension problems. They ensured me that they would fix these issues if I bought the car. After buying the car, they have had me in and out of their shop 4 or 5 times to which they only lube the parts or lie to me claiming that the car has been fixed. I feel that this business practice is unsafe and misleading. They claimed to have replaced a control arm to which goodyear later (when I was buying tires) informed me that my control arms were bad. I was surprised to hear this. North coast should be investigated as they are selling unsafe cars, claiming to repair issues and then putting me in an unsafe car. 30 claims have been made about similar issues via the better business bureau, the federal trade commission and the ohio attorney general. I feel that they should be investigated for safety reasons.
The owner of the vehicle state's he was traveling down the entering the highway on the way home. He heard pop and then something under the vehicle started rattling, the owner stated when he took the vehicle to a shop they put it on the rack. The shop notified the owner that the vehicle shouldn't be driven, both steering knuckle bushings, ball joints, front right suspension parts were all bad and needed to be replaced. Chrysler should recall this vehicle for as it not just mine as I ask the shop and they has several vehicle of that make come in with same problem. We as tax payers bailed them out, and now it time for the government to tell them they need to fix this issue and any other issues with the vehicle. There are still a lot of pt cruiser on the road today, but I guess they greedy son of b** in detroit took the money and left the customer paying for the safety of their families. Nobody should have to die in car in order for something to be done.

I just purchased this vehicle and had it for less then 3 weeks. I drove it a total of 5 times. When I was driving to work on a major highway, the car started to act up. The speedometer went from 55 to zero then back up to 80, I lost the ability to steer and accelerate, all of the lights came on the dash board, the car fuel gauges went up and down, and finally the car stalled. I was on a major highway which was a very scary. No codes were recorded for a mechanic to find out the problem. The problem is not fixed, and seems to be a problem with several Pt Cruisers from what I have researched. I am working with the dealer attempting for a refund, as I feel my safety and the safety of others are at risk.
2001 Chrysler Pt Cruiser. Consumer writes in regards to power steering hose recall notice and seeks reimbursement for repairs. The consumer stated he experienced power steering problems twice, where the power steering hose was leaking. The dealer replaced the same hose, at no charge to the consumer. The consumer is seeking reimbursement for the first replacement, due to a recall he discovered, which was the same issue he experienced.
Very much the same as the other complaints listed on here. I kept having problems with the car shutting down and / or the steering locking on me. Started in September and had to "continually" go back to the dealer over & over & over again just to have them say they've check the diagnostics and nothing is showing up. Then next time they said it was probably needing a new computer switch. . . . So more $$$. This was never resolved until after "multiple" incidents & "multiple" visits to the dealer. Then one day in late October. . . Now 2 months of frustration. . . . I'm in the parking lot of a mall & the car slows down & the gauges start going crazy. It shows zero 0 speed & zero 0 in my fuel tank. . . . . I had just filled the gas tank 2 hours earlier. . . . . And then it just stops. Then starts up again but with a weird sound. So once again I drove "directly to the dealer" while terrified that it may just stop dead while driving & be rear-ended. And after the dealer hooked it up once "again" they said it had to do with the ignition switch. Saying it was throwing off all the computer mechanisms and that's why it would just stop dead while driving. And this was $1,400 later. . . . . Yes, $1,400 for them to finally "figure this out when all they had to do was look on here". . . . To see the "strong possibility" of what was wrong. And yes, I sincerely think Chrysler corp should reimburse all of us as this is an obvious mechanical / electrical design error on their part. I've had a pt cruise in the past. But, believe me I will not be buying another car from your company when this should have definitely been a recall. Especially & vastly for safety reasons!!! and as for Chrysler, you should be ashamed of yourselves. . . . Playing dangerous games with peoples lives!!! and so should your dealerships. . . . At least the dealer I paid $1400 !!!.
Driving at 55mph and all the gauges (gas, speed, tach) went to zero and fluttered up and down, the vehicle stalled. Was fortunate enough to be able to pull over safely and restart the vehicle without incidence. The vehicle has repeated this on several occasions. I was able to record on my phone the instrument panel while it was acting up. Think I have isolated the problem to the key and ignition. I have found if I wiggle the key when this happens it stops. This could be very dangerous since you lose power to the vehicle while driving, it happens without warning. Several internet searches reveal alot of people with the same complaint. I think Chrysler should so be responsible for repair of this problem, they evidently produced a product with a defect that could potentially cause loss of life or bodily damage.
I found that you all had issued a recall on 2004 non turbo Chrysler Pt Cruiser pressure hose. I have a turbo'ed edition, however I have not found where there are any differences in any of the power-steering components for this edition of the vehicle. I have found a leak in my pressure hose that connects to the power steering that looks like it may have been burned from touching another part on the car. I am not a mechanic so I have not attempted to do any work on this vehicle. I cannot have the part replaced because the recall is for "non-turbo" editions of the car. I would ask that someone please explain to me how the power steering components are different from the recalled 04 Pt Cruiser.

The contact stated that while driving approximately 50 mph, the steering wheel became difficult to maneuver without warning due to the loss of power steering assist. The engine was turned off and after restarting, the vehicle resumed with the defect. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic three times. The first visit the steering belt and hose were replaced. In addition, a power steering fluid flush was performed. On the second and third visits, the steering belts were detached and reconnected. The manufacturer was notified of the problem. The failure mileage and VIN was unavailable.

I purchased the car and right from the start ive had to replace the wheel bearings , I have had to do so 3 times already within the short amount of time I have had the car , there has been no unusual stress on the bearings to make them wear out , now in my experience I have never had to replace a wheel bearing on a car with anything less than 100k mi on it , let alone 3 times , I dont know what to make of it, also im having stalling/rough idle problems that no one can seem to figure out it has stalled 5 times already and regularly idles rough, these problems are not normal and cannot be figured our ,I've replaces several parts including the erg valve pvc valve spark plugs and wires the iac cleaned the throttle body and the carb and im still having these issues.

The key is stuck in the ignition. . . I have to unattach the battery cable so the battery will not go dead. I am women who has a disease called cancer. . I am truly in some need to have someone to investigate this matter as soon as possible. The dealer wants to charge at least $330. 00 to figure out which I am on a fixed income,still making payments on the car. I feel like this should not be a fault of mine when a key is stuck in the ignition. I need your assistance because the car can not get inspected and I am unable to get to my treatments. While traveling down the qew highway in ontario, the instrument panel on my pt 2009 cruiser started blinking on and off, the gauges went wild with up and down full-range swings, then blinking on and off on and off; I thought the seatbelt may be the problem since the fasten seatbelt indicator remained "on. " it happened again a second time right away (less than 2 minutes) accompanied by loss of engine power. I heard sputtering, and then the engine died, and I had to guide it to a resting spot on the side of the road without power steering; not fun. I was in near hamilton, ontario, and managed to get off the highway safely. I inspected under the hood and nothing seemed out of the ordinary at all. Engine restarted right away, and I was able to make it back to e. Amherst NY. This is totally unsafe! I was concerned about getting my family home safely. And there is no way to know what is wrong with the vehicle! I cannot trust my car and that stinks! I had same type of problem with a grand caravan (1994?) and the mechanics could never locate the problem. Makes me wonder about Chrysler.
