This investigation was opened on Mar. 20, 2009. It was closed on Aug. 12, 2010. Gm designed the my 2004 and 2005 Chevrolet malibu and malibu maxx vehicles with a daytime running lamp (drl) system that uses the same filament (the high power filament of a dual filament bulb) as the front turn signals.

2 Tail lights defect investigations of Chevrolet Malibu vehicles
This investigation was opened on Oct. 21, 2008. It was closed on Mar. 20, 2009. The subject vehicles may experience loss of function of one or more of the park, turn, stop or daytime running lamps (drl). Failure of the bulb may also include discoloration (heat damage) to the bulb socket.

4 Windshield wiper/washer linkages defect investigations of Chevrolet Malibu vehicles
This investigation was opened on Jul. 7, 2004. It was closed on Jan. 13, 2005. In March 2001, gm notified NHTSA that it is conducting a safety recall (NHTSA number 01v068) on certain model year (my) 1997-1998 Chevrolet malibu and Oldsmobile cutlass vehicles to replace defective windshield wiper pivot housings.

In performing this engineering analysis, odi determined that the electric power steering system in the subject vehicles can malfunction or fail, causing the driver to lose power steering assistance; however, due to the following reasons, odi has decided that further expenditure of agency resources

6 Turn signal switch defect investigations of Chevrolet Malibu vehicles
This investigation was opened on Jun. 18, 2004. It was closed on Nov. 30, 2004. Gm conducted a recall (NHTSA recall number 03v327) on model year (my) 2000-2001 alero, grand am and malibu vehicles to replace defective hazard switches that cause the turn signals and hazard lights to fail. The recall covered vehicles built from February 2000 through may 2001 (depending on model).

7 Steering defect investigations of Chevrolet Malibu vehicles
This investigation was opened on Mar. 30, 2004. It was closed on Jul. 1, 2004. Odi opened pe04-031 based on eight reports of alleged power steering failure in the subject vehicles. The complaints allege that the driver suddenly lost all electric power steering assistance without warning making the vehicle difficult to steer.

12 Fuel gauge system defect investigations of Chevrolet Malibu vehicles

Odi opened ea 02-028 to review complaints of consumers reporting that their fuel gauge was incorrectly displaying the amount of fuel in the gas tank. The fuel gauge receives an electrical signal from a fuel tank sending sensor circuit card.

13 Fuel system defect investigations of Chevrolet Malibu vehicles
This investigation was opened on Sep. 6, 2002. It was closed on Nov. 3, 2003. Odi opened pe02-066 to evaluate the scope and consequence of engine power-loss due to fuel starvation induced by in-tank modular fuel pump strainer restriction. The subject pumps use an external sock strainer to filter fuel flowing to the pump inlet.

15 Turn signal switch defect investigations of Chevrolet Malibu vehicles
This investigation was opened on Aug. 22, 2002. It was closed on Dec. 23, 2002. Odi opened the investigation based on 9 complaints of turn signals operating sporadically on the 2000-2001 Chevrolet malibu. The turn signals quit working without warning and may occur while the vehicle is in motion or standing still. Gm identified the hazard switch as the root cause of this problem.

In November 1999, gm initiated a non-safety owner notification campaign to address certain 2000 Chevrolet, pontiac and buicks, equipped with th 3. 1l engine, to replace engine's throttle body. Due to an oversized cable ball retention feature, the cable end could disconnect from the throttle body.
