Check Engine Light On problems of the 2008 Dodge Avenger
Four problems linked to check engine light on have been reported for the 2008 Dodge Avenger.
Check Engine Light On problem #1
I have been having problems with my Dodge Avenger for about 40,000 miles now and have had it into multiple shops without the problem being solved. The electronic throttle control light comes on and off at random times either causing my car to shut off while im going down the road, cause power lag with no acceleration about 45 mph or shifting into different gears, or the engine light comes on along with the etc light and the car will idle very high then very low and repeat the process making the car unable to drive. The vehicle has shut off on me while going down interstate and highways and I've almost been hit several times because of it. I see lots of postings with the same issue but there are no recalls on this issue which dealerships do not know how to fix. I've been told to change the battery, the tpms was messing up, the throttle valve was sticking, improper fuel delivery, and that the car wasn't getting enough air. None of these once fixed were the cause of the car freaking out and now im forced to drive day to day with my son in the car hoping it works well enough that an accident wont happen. I've seen enough complaints about the electronic throttle control that there should have been a recall a long time ago to fix this yet it's been 4 years and still nothing is being done to help make peoples vehicles safe again that they paid for. The failure date was Wednesday, October 13, 2010.
Check Engine Light On problem #2
The vehicle was a 2008 Dodge Avenger. We were driving on the highway about 65 mph when our electric throttle control indicator light along with our engine light came on. When this happened we did not have a spedometer or rpm gauge. All of the lights that are related to the shifter (park, neautral, drive) also all lit up. The car did continue to drive but had less power. We pulled over and turned the car off. We tried to start it again but it would not start at first. The power locks and truck release would not work either. After about 5 minutes we tried it again and everything worked. The check engine light did stay on but the car drove fine. The engine light is still currently on. This issue happened on Monday, September 19, 2011.
Check Engine Light On problem #3
The owner has a 2008 Dodge Avenger r/t. The contact stated that the vehicle has been at the dealer for over a month for repairs. He stated that the engine has noisy lifters. The vehicle was taken to the dealer four times and they only replaced the lifters once. The manufacturer stated that this is how the vehicle had to be manufactured due to the thermal expander. While driving 65 mph, the transmission engages in an automatic neutral drop. The engine races above 5,000 rpms, which is not recommended. The failure has occurred twice. The transmission also jumped into reverse while driving at low speeds. The vehicle has been at the dealer four times for the transmission. The dealer called the contact and stated that they could not find anything wrong with the transmission, however, they do acknowledge the failure. The transmission failure began in April of 2007 and has continued ever since. The current mileage is 2,500 and failure mileage was 7. The check engine light illuminated, there were broken bolts and studs. The shifter would not return to park. The rocker arms, valve cover, lifters and heads were replaced in the engine. Updated 08/08/07. The failure date was Mar. 15, 2007.
