5 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2007 Dodge Grand Caravan

Failure Date: 04/07/2011

2007 Dodge Grand Caravan had been parked for 6 days while we were away on vacation. Returned to airport and drove vehicle home (30 miles). Next morning drove vehicle into town (15 miles) with no problems. Parked for 1 hour then went to return home. Within a few miles the vehicle moved itself into a neutral state (display showed "d" still) while moving down the road. This was immediately made aware as the vehicle began to slow and the engine quickly revved high. Was barely able to coast safely into a parking area. Turned vehicle off for 5 minutes, then restarted and it drove the rest of the way home. Issue is that the vehicle moved itself into neutral without reason and also did not update display. We live in michigan and temperature has been 35 degrees or less recently.

6 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2010 Dodge Grand Caravan

Failure Date: 03/14/2011

While stopped and then try to drive forward or reverse, there would be a pause and then suddenly jerk forward/reverse and then be okay. The last time before I had it serviced, (under warranty), I was able to drive forward but reverse would only last a few seconds before it wouldn't work. You press on the gas but it wouldn't move. If you put into forward and then reverse it sometimes let you reverse further but only a foot at a time. New 2010 Grand Caravan with 5100 kim is getting the transmission replaced.

7 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2009 Dodge Grand Caravan

Failure Date: 12/08/2010

When moving the cvt transmission, dash mounted gear shift lever from reverse to drive the gear shift lever assembly fell apart. The handle fell to the floor, as did the button and the internal spring. This occurred today 8/12/2010 for the first and only time (so far). I managed to re-assemble the spring, button and lever upholstered grip onto the lever itself but I have no idea what is supposed to keep it in place. I found no screw on the floor of the vehicle. It will require servicing to repair at a dealership. In the meanwhile I guess I will have to just use the lever itself but I have concerns about that because I now have a pointed piece of metal sticking out of my dash. I have not driven the vehicle since the incident.

Failure Date: 10/22/2010

2008 Dodge Grand Caravan. Consumer states rapid deceleration the consumer stated while driving with the cruise control activated, the vehicle suddenly down shifted to what he believed was third gear. The braking effect of the lower gear caused a substantial increase in the engine speed to around the red line area. The rapid acceleration lasted about five seconds and the cruise control was disengaged as quickly as possible. The consumer stated the same incident happened three weeks prior. According to the dealer, it was a normal operation of the vehicle called interactive cruise control and it was more noticeable due to the vehicle having a 6 speed transmission and the vehicle would up and down shift more to keep the vehicle at its set speed.

11 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2008 Dodge Grand Caravan

Failure Date: 09/07/2010

There was no warning signs as to the following happening. My husband & 2 year old daughter were in the car and about to get on highway 101 ventura CA. , in our 2008 Dodge minivan. Miles on vehicle: 50,000. The van was running but would not accelerate & he had to coast to the side of the road. I am the mother of the 2 year old that was in the van, I am also a nurse who has worked in a level one trauma hospital & have seen the results of terrible accidents. My concern is that if my husband & daughter were on the highway & trapped in a lane that they could not get over in this could of been a fatality. Dealership tells us that there is a crack in the transmission that caused the above situation. We had our van at a the local dealership in June 2010 for a different recall & they did a diagnostic test, so they said. . . . And now this. 2. My inlaws just bought a 2008 Dodge minivan 43,000 miles & one week after they bought it the same thing happened to them on vacation.

12 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2008 Dodge Grand Caravan

Failure Date: 07/12/2010

2008 Dodge Grand Caravan sxt. The dealership never made customer aware of an internal memo (rrt - rapid response transmissal) to fix main lthrust bearing in transmission in summer of 2009. Transmission must be replaced as of July of 2010. Dealer/manufacturer is not cooperating. The dealership had information in July 2009 while vehicle was under factory warranty and never made customer aware of bearing problem. Vehicle has since passed out of warranty and dealer is charging $5000. 00 to fix transmission. I believe this situation to be border line fraud with very dangerous ramifications to my wife and three children.

13 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2008 Dodge Grand Caravan

Failure Date: 08/26/2009

Brakes, transmission, doors.

14 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2008 Dodge Grand Caravan

Failure Date: 05/08/2009

There weren't any signs leading up to the device failure. Drove into a store parking lot and into a parking spot where I attempted to shift into park with the automatic transmission shifter knob when the whole knob popped of into several pieces leaving me stuck in drive and forced to apply the emergency brake. The vehicle was then turned off and I was able to get it into park. Vehicle has since been to the dealer for repairs, but the part is unavailable at the moment. Vehicle is drivable, but tricky when dealing with the shifter knob. I consider this a safety issue with the vehicle and have read elsewhere of the same problem occurring with the same year, make, and model of vehicle.

17 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2008 Dodge Grand Caravan

Failure Date: 10/09/2008

Poor transmission design robert c hodgkiss gentlemen: I recently bought a 2008 Dodge Grand Caravan and while going down a long steep section of roadway I down shifted the transmission to slow the van down but being such a steep grade the van increased speed causing the transmission to automatically shift to the next higher gear, ending up free wheeling, leaving only the breaks to slow the van down. (if you are going to fast to start with it won?t even down shift). Now I asked the mechanic, what happens if I loose my brakes, the answer he had was it?s a design feature, so I concluded that if I would push on the emergency break, which locks, that would put me into an uncontrolled slide which makes no sense at all. I strongly believe that this is a very serious problem that must be addressed. What if you are coming down a mountain road while towing a trailer, you would have to apply the breaks to keep the transmission in a lower gear. What happens if your breaks fail, that?s right the van shift up to freewheeling? leaving you to do what, use the emergency break which locks you into a skid. Because the emergency brake pedal has to be pushed the second time to unlock. Now I ?am sure everybody can remain calm and remember to do all this while towing a trailer with your wife and six children in the back of the van, screaming what is the matter?.

18 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2007 Dodge Grand Caravan

Failure Date: 06/25/2008

I purchased this vehicle in August 2007 and from day one, noticed the hard shift on move-off and on slow-down. I have a friend who was experiencing the same issue with a 2007 Toyota and the issue was resolved with a software upgrade. I just took my car into my neighborhood dealership along with a copy of the bulletin info (thanks to mycarstats. Com for making this information available to the consumer) and they said that the vehicle tested fine - no problems. This is absolutely ridiculous!! so I reported the problem to Dodge customer service. They recommended that I visit another (highly recommended) dealership for a second opinion. Why should this be??? this is a simple software fix.

19 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2008 Dodge Grand Caravan

21 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2000 Dodge Grand Caravan

Failure Date: 02/28/2008

The contact owns a 2000 Dodge Grand Caravan. While checking the transmission under the hood with the engine running, the contact's granddaughter was able to shift from neutral to drive. The engine revved and the vehicle moved forward, knocking the contact underneath the vehicle. When the vehicle suddenly stopped, she managed to get up from under the vehicle and turn off the engine. The contact was the only one injured. The paramedics had been called and the fire department filed a report. She was then transported to the hospital. Chrysler stated that it was impossible for the gear to be moved out of position without depressing the brake pedal. They offered no assistance and the contact is concerned that the failure may recur. The failure mileage was 124,000 and current mileage was 124,784. Updated 05/13/08.

22 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2000 Dodge Grand Caravan

Failure Date: 01/10/2008

I picked up on a matter of safety with my 2000 Dodge Grand Caravan se, when the vehicle is turned on, and running the vehicle can be shifted from park to other gears without the break pedal being depressed. This issues continues to happen. I spoke with the dealer about the issue, and was told that in the 2000 model it wasn't required to press the brake pedal to shift the vehicle. I as the consumer do not think this the case. I can make it happen time after time, and can show you it happening. Could result in property damage, and or crash.

23 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2007 Dodge Grand Caravan

Failure Date: 12/14/2007

Since middle of last December 2007 I cannot use my car because ?transmission has no reverse?. This is second time a trouble like this happens. First time it happened on last October 2007 at 2,230 miles. ). I cannot agree with your corporation's decision and larry miller Dodge service center's decision to repair the van at every 2,000 miles. Please help me.

24 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2007 Dodge Grand Caravan

Failure Date: 08/04/2007

On 8/4/07, my 2007 Dodge Grand Caravan was parked in our driveway, in park with the engine running. I proceeded to open the door and the car went down the hill, into our woods, and hit a tree. The car was in park the entire time. After this, I have spent numerous hours contacting Chrysler. Chrysler did send out a mechanic and they did admit that the problem was mechanical - transmission did not have the 'parking pin'. I was told by Chrysler that this could have happened anywhere. At this point, Chrysler wants to replace my old van with a new one and me to pay the difference. I am not agreeing to this. I have also been told by Chrysler and the dealership that this was an isolated incident. I believe that this is not true.

25 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2007 Dodge Grand Caravan

Failure Date: 06/02/2007

I have had my 07' Grand Caravan in the shop now a total of 3times for the same issue. The transmission does not shift correctly . . . It has a hard down shift when coming to a stop and sometimes will do the hard shift while in drive as well. I was told this would be fixed by September . . It is now November and still nothing. I took this to another dealer to have it checked out and they are saying there is nothing wrong with it. There is something wrong it should not feel like my transmission is going to drop out when I come to a stop. Guess next time it does I will have it back in there again.

26 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2006 Dodge Grand Caravan

Failure Date: 05/19/2007

I own and drive a 2006 Dodge Grand Caravan. On may 19, 2007, I drove to my usual parking spot and put the van in 'park'. I exited the car and looked to the rear of the van to see how close I was to the sidewalk. I reached into the car to pull out my key, accidentally turning it to 'accessory' for a brief second before turning it to the 'off' position and removing the key. While standing next to the car, with the driver's door still open, the van began rolling backwards! I was in shock for a bit before I realized what was happening. The driver's door was pushing me from behind, and I had to walk forward to keep the door from knocking me down. I tried to reach the brake with my left hand or jump into the vehicle so I could brake. Being pushed by the door prevented this. The rear wheels rolled over the curb followed by the front tires. I desperately tried to prevent the van from rolling into the street by grabbing the steering wheel and turning it a little. The slight upslope of the road slowed the vehicle down enough for me to jump in. I put the key into the ignition, started the vehicle as quickly as I could and put it in drive. I moved forward slightly, hitting the curb, put it into reverse and drove back a bit to clear the curb, put it back into drive and drove back up onto the parking area. I immediately felt pain in both knees, back, both hips, right leg and right ankle, left upper area under my arm and into the ribcage. Later I also began having stiffness in my neck, and experienced occasional numbness in both arms, depending on the position I had them in. I tried to contact daimler Chrysler online since it was a Saturday. Even after choosing the link "contact us" I was never given a phone number or e-mail address! on Monday, may 21, 2007, I contacted the Dodge dealer from whom I purchased the vehicle one year ago. I made an appointment to have the van checked over and repaired this Friday, may 25, 2007.

27 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2007 Dodge Grand Caravan

Failure Date: 04/18/2007

My Dodge Grand Caravan died while driving down the highway. It has happened twice. My local dealer say there is nothing for the dealer to look at. In both cases this problem occurred right after I accelerated on the interstate to pass a car. Everything goes dead just like I turned the car off. I put the van into neutral while it is going. Pulled to side of highway to restart van. Never heard of this before. It may be important to get on the record because this could be a dangerous situation depending on where and when it happens. If it results in an accident I'll file legal action. Dodge should know they have a problem and provide fix it. Before someone is killed.

30 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2000 Dodge Grand Caravan

Failure Date: 12/06/2006

While driving on a major interstate the transmission in my 2000 Dodge Grand Caravan locked up with only 87403 miles registered. After having it towed to a reputable transmission company I found that the entire transmission was damaged for no apparent reason and had to be replaced. While repairs were being made I investigated to see if there was a recall for this vehicle for transmission problems and found that many individuals have had problems with this particular vehicle but there have been no recalls to this date. All parts including gears were replaced at my expense of $2221. 58. It is my understanding that the transmissions in this vehicle should not have problems and especially should not have to be replaced until at least over 100,000 miles.

31 Automatic Transmission problem of the 1998 Dodge Grand Caravan
