Engine light turned on, vehicle failed to start and was towed to garage. Mechanic diagnosed problem as timing chain sensor wear, due to stretched timing chain related to well documented oil sludge problem in 2. 7l v6 engine. After the sensor was replaced, drove the vehicle for two weeks and engine light reappeared. For approximately 18 months, vehicle was driven with engine light turning on and off on its own. At times, the vehicle was difficult to start, particularly in cold weather, but would resolve itself and start fine with the engine light turning off. After 18 months, the engine light remained lit all the time. It would stall in traffic and the oil light would appear. At this point, after reading thousands of others complaints on this vehicle/engine and understanding engine repair costs would eclipse the value, I decided the vehicle was unsafe to drive.

The contact owns a 2001 Dodge Intrepid. The contact stated that intermittently while driving 30 mph, the vehicle will stalled without any prior warnings. This condition increases the risk for vehicle crash. The vehicle was taken to the dealer for inspection. The technician speculated that cam shaft or crank shaft sensor was the cause of the failure. 1999 Dodge Intrepid stall on a daily bases sometimes it will restart other times you have to wait 30 to 60 mins. It will start and drive then you shut it off it will not restart for 30 to 60 mins sometimes longer. Engine also has sludge build up. Vehicle has 108000 miles on it. It is the 2. 7 liter engine. After reading some of the other complaints I do not understand why there has not been a recall issued. This is a serious problem that can get someone injured or worse. There is no need in trying to fix this problem because you fix one thing and something else is going to go wrong. Chrysler needs to step up and fix this problem.

The contact owns a 2001 Dodge Intrepid. While driving 50 mph, the vehicle shuddered and then repeatedly stalled. The vehicle then completely shut off and lost all power. The contact was unable to restart the vehicle and had it towed to a repair shop. The mechanic could not find any failures and their computer system showed no issues. However, the service manager test drove the vehicle and experienced the stalling. While driving at an unknown speed, the vehicle stalled again on the freeway after much jerking and lunging. The dealer was able to duplicate failure, but could not determine the cause of the failure. The manufacturer has not been notified. The VIN was unknown. The current mileage was approximately 65,000 and failure mileage was approximately 64,500.

I bought this car used with about 100,000 miles for $2,000. It's a beautiful car in and out for the price great condition! I've noticed that when I start if up to let if warm, it war extremely loud, but I didn't think it was a big deal since it's cold out and it needed to warm. Tonight I was driving on a busy highway when I stopped at a red light and when it went silent, and stalled in the middle of a !@#$% highway at a red light too. No lights came on to indicate a problem. I finally got it started after a few minutes of harassing drivers and got it to a parking lot when it stalled again right when I pulled in. Started it again and parked it. Checked the oil and it was bone dry. I bought and put plenty of oil in it let it run drove a little and it worked great. Drove home when it happened again. Its now sitting in town until I have it towed tomorrow. Nice car inside and out!!!! dangerously shotty american motor.

I got my Intrepid new as a company car, and subsequently bought it when the division had layoffs (less than 10k miles, I was the original owner). It has been a dependable car, until it 'stalled out' last week. Turns out there's water in the oil, so the suspicion is a blown head gasket. The temperature gauge was 'normal' (not overheated) and there was a trail of oil that had come out the oil filler tube (dip stick 'popped' due to pressure). The car is driven about 5 miles each way to work and back each day, and for occasional errands in the evenings/weekend. I took it to a local mechanic to get a further diagnosis and estimate for repair. The vehicle was in good condition (38k miles), serviced regularly, and up until now, considered reliable.
My vehicle just had the oil changed before my husband and I took a trip out of state. When we returned my vehicle stalled before going into second gear and the engine began knocking. We have taken my car to a mechanic and the estimated cost of repair is around $5,000.
I was driving south bound on interstate 15 in centerville utah at approximately 65 miles per hour. I was in the center lane of three lanes. The engine suddenly lost all power. I was fortunate in steering the vehicle to the right and ended up, stalled, in the median of the on-ramp and the far right hand lane.
Purchased the 2002 Dodge Intrepid 2/11/06. In less than 1 year the engine locked. The vehicle was towed to dealer. Not to rebuild. Salvaged engine wasn't an option, would only have the same problem. The mechanic found the core of the engine was beyond repair. The two mechanics expected payment. I explored the web & the cheapest rebuild engine I could find was $2,499 + core charge, that I won't get back with a shot core. The mechanic will have to be paid of course, to reinstall the re-manufactured engine. Oh, and let's not forget the loan balance still required for the purchase of a car that cannot be driven. Fortunately. I am able to borrow from my 401k to get the car drivable again or my daughter would be out of luck. However, the most discouraging thought was how long will the rebuild engine last? thank god it came with a 3 year unlimited mileage warranty. The original engine, when purchased used had 82,357 on it, and my daughter only got about 10,000 miles of use before it died. That was terrible.
Driving to have maintenance performed on my 1999 Dodge Intrepid. While driving down the highway, engine suddenly died. I had no braking or steering control once this happened. Had the vehicle towed and was told I would need another engine. I have researched the price and it ranges from 1700 (used) to 5499 (remanufactured and installed).
: the contact stated while driving 50 mph under normal road conditions, the vehicle stalled. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, who determined a new motor was needed.
: the contact stated while driving 70 mph cold air blew from the heater and the vehicle stalled. It was maneuvered off the road and towed to an independent repair shop who determined a release valve fractured causing the water to leak out of the engine. The engine had to be replaced. The dealer has been alerted. Updated 01/10/07.
: the contact stated while driving 40 mph, the vehicle stalled. There were no warning signals prior to the incident. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who determined that the engine was blown and would need to be replaced. The manufacturer was not informed.
: the contact stated while driving 30 mph, the engine operated at a reduced speed and stalled without warning. The contact managed to coast the vehicle to the side of the road without incident. After being towed to an independent repair shop, a diagnostic test was performed, which indicated the engine needed to be replaced. The manufacturer was not alerted.
2000 Dodge Intrepid v6 2. 7 engine. Stalled in after work high traffic. Would not start. Had to be towed. Bottom line is engine is bad . Unable to repair/replace. Still owe 2 yrs on the car.
Violent shaking of the vehicle. Loud metal clanging type noise. Sudden lack of acceleration. Stalling and failure of power steering at 45 mph. I was returning home from my son's school in heavy traffic and we almost crashed into a brick wall. Fortunately I was strong enough to maintain enough control of the steering wheel to somewhat safely stop the vehicle on the side of the road.
: the contact stated while driving 65 mph on the highway, the vehicle stalled without warning. It was maneuvered off the road and towed to an independent repair shop where it was determined the engine needed to be replaced. The dealer was notified. Updated 10/6/2006 -.
: the contact stated while driving 65 mph, the vehicle stalled completely. The vehicle was not able to be restarted immediately. It was taken to a service dealer, where they determined that the oil was low. The contact expressed that the vehicle was maintained regularly, so the oil should not have been low.
: the contact stated while traveling 65 mph, the vehicle stalled. After coasting to the side of the highway, the vehicle would not restart and it was towed to an independent repair shop. The shop determined there was sludge in the oil causing the engine to seize. The engine needed to be replaced.
I was driving home from my daughter's house when I started to hear a slight tick coming from the motor. Being only a 30 miles from home on a Sunday I decided to drive it and have the car checked out on Monday. I never made it. 5 miles from home I heard a pop and the car stalled and never started again. I had it towed to the garage that told me the motor was dead and it would cost me $4500 to $5500 to fix. The oil was like sludge even though I changed it every 3000 - 3500 miles like clockwork.
The timing chain broke resulting in bent valves and the car completely stalling.
: the contact stated while driving 65 mph the oil light illuminated, the vehicle started to jerk and then stalled. There was a loss of power steering and abs. The vehicle was pulled to the side of the highway. The vehicle was then towed to the contacts home for inspection by a local mechanic. The mechanic determined the engine had oil sludge and needed to be replaced. Although the dealer was alerted no further inspections have been made. The manufacturer has not been alerted.
: the contact stated the vehicle hesitated intermittently before it finally stalled. Also, the brakes did not hold properly. The dealer determined the engine needed to be replaced due to sludge. The dealer also replaced the brake pads, rotors and calipers but indicated the abs sensor also needed to be replaced.
Without warning my 2. 7l engine seized up while I was driving causing a complete loss of control I hit a concrete post. Highway patrol came but did not press charges against me for property damage. This is a dangerous but well documented design flaw of this particular engine and I hope I can recover enough money from the texas based impartial services group to buy a new engine because I love my Dodge Intrepid. I'm only 18 years old and can't afford another vehicle. Just two days after I bought this Intrepid - while driving on the highway all the gauges including the speedometer failed and I had to pay $1414. 32 to have a new computer installed at my local Dodge dealership.
: the contact stated while driving 65 mph the vehicle stalled without warning. The vehicle was moved off the road and towed to the dealer. It was determined to have engine sludge and the engine needed to be replaced. Updated 05/22/06- the consumer maintained that he had regular oil changes performed on the vehicle.
We had no injury or permanent failure yet. However, the 2. 7 liter engine in the 2002 Dodge Intrepid continued to plague us with problems related to sludge buildup. The vehicle had regular 3,000 mile oil changes prior to the first incident, then more frequent changes after. We had the oil pan drop once to remove sludge buildup, and two oil pressure sending units installed in the last 13 months. I am very familiar with how a vehicle operates, and what to do in emergencies to avoid permanent damage to vehicle parts, and I feel that this is the only reason we have not had a permanent failure of this motor.
: the contact stated while driving, the vehicle stalled without warning. The vehicle was left overnight and started the next morning. The vehicle was driven to an independent repair shop. The repair shop determined there was sludge in the oil, and temporarily repaired the vehicle, but the engine needs to be replaced.
While the contact's wife was driving the vehicle stalled. There were no warnings prior to the vehicle stalling. While stalling the oil light illuminated. The vehicle has not been taken to a dealership to determine the cause of the problem.
