While driving with a small child in the car - less than 15mph near a residential area - my 2005 Ford Expedition ltd suddenly flashed an error message "check electronic throttle control" and immediately lost acceleration, braking and steering. I was able to veer the vehicle to the side of the road without causing an accident. I used the emergency brake to stop the vehicle at which time I manually turned off the ignition. Waited a few moments, and managed to get the vehicle started and running again. There was absolutely no warning and the vehicle gives you no opportunity to get the vehicle pulled over safely before disengaging. This appears to be a very serious and dangerous sudden mechanical failure.

: the contact stated while driving 60 mph, the transmission shifted into neutral instead of overdrive. The vehicle was shut off and restarted, which momentarily fixed the problem. After 20 miles, however, the vehicle stayed in neutral and would not engage any other gear. The vehicle was towed to a private repair shop, where it was determined that the intermediate diode teeth detached, the diode mounting snap ring was fractured, the reverse clutch housing was scored, the overdrive band was metal contaminated, and the one-way clutch was fractured. The mechanic notified the contact that had been a common problem with the vehicle.

Vehicle disengages when parked. When trying to shift it fails, and when removing the key it is difficult.
When vehicle is put into reverse it is not engaging. You must use the accelerator to go anywhere and then the front end feels as if it is stuck on something and reverses extremely hard and makes a very loud screeching noise. Dealer says there is nothing wrong and cannot do anything unless the problem occurs when at the dealership. I took it directly to them after the problem occured this last time.
