The contact owns a 2000 Ford Explorer. The contact stated that while driving, the windshield wiper would activate without engagement. The vehicle was taken to a local repair shop where it was diagnosed that the multi-function switch was defective and needed to be replace. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure but did not offer any assistance. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 169,000 and current mileage was 175,000.

The windshield wipers will start on their own. When it happens, they will continue intermittently until I turn the wipers on high then turn them back off. It is extremely intermittent, sometimes going months before it will do it. Has been doing this for about a year.

This is an intermittent problem where the windshield wipers engage without being prompted to do so and for no apparent reason.
Rear windshield wiper switch/motor failed from time to time.
After using window washer, wipers come on when using signals. Happens all the time.
Windshield washer will not spray fluid. Safety concern as visibility can be impaired, especially in the winter. Have seen Ford discussion groups that this is a common problem, possibility related to excessive grease in the electrical contacts of the wiper and washer spray switch.

While driving in rainy weather conditions windshield wipers become inoperable. Dealer states that the problem occures due a malfunction within the module switch. Ford unable to repair problem and will not allow dealer to replace the switch.
Windshield wipers randomly activate when switch is in off position.
