6 Fuel Delivery problem of the 2005 Ford Focus

Failure Date: 02/13/2007

We have a 2005 Ford Focus wagon with approximately 37,000 miles. We have had the car back to the dealer three times in the last month due to an idling problem that the dealer cannot remedy. The throttle sometimes sticks and the car accelerates uncontrollably on its own. At other times the car dies at idle. This is an extremely dangerous situation and the anecdotal evidence in several internet chat rooms indicates that our car is not the only one experiencing this situation. Apparently, Ford continues to deny there's a problem, but ignoring it only puts lives in danger.

7 Fuel Delivery problem of the 2000 Ford Focus

Failure Date: 11/08/2006

: the contact stated the vehicle was not included in NHTSA recall # 03v482000, for the fuel system: gasoline due to the VIN, when the manufacturer was notified, although the vehicle had the same problems as described in the recall. The contact stated while traveling 55 mph, the engine hesitated when the accelerator was depressed, making a chugging or coughing sound before the engine reacted and accelerated.

8 Fuel Delivery problem of the 2001 Ford Focus

Failure Date: 10/26/2006

The contact owns a 2001 Ford Focus. While driving at various speeds, the vehicle hesitates, stalls, and has to be restarted each time. The vehicle was taken to Ford at least 12 times; however, they could not duplicate the failure. The vehicle was taken to a mechanic and he discovered that the fuel pump failed. His VIN was not included in NHTSA campaign id number 03v482000 (fuel system, gasoline). The vehicle was returned to the dealer and they stated that the vehicle was no longer under warranty. The current mileage was 72,000 and failure mileage was 42,000.

9 Fuel Delivery problem of the 2001 Ford Focus

Failure Date: 06/30/2006

Vehicle stalls underway due to clogged fuel filter. I have replaced the fuel filter three time in the last 10,000 miles. Appears to be clogged with black material. Believe this could be related to ea02022. This last time my 17 yr old was the driver.

10 Fuel Delivery problem of the 2000 Ford Focus

Failure Date: 03/20/2006

I was driving at 65 mph, while the engine of my car started loosing power and rpms. I immediately shifted to neutral and pulled to the side of the road. I tried to restart the car, but it was running pretty bad, almost as if not enough fuel was going to the engine. I shut the engine off for 5 minutes. I restarted again and it worked ok for another 10 minutes, when the problem occurred again. This is not the first time this is happening, usually it happens when it's a warm (not hot) day, and with half tank or less. However the problem got worse, so it happens regardless of the fuel level. The fuel pump seems to overheat.

11 Fuel Delivery problem of the 2000 Ford Focus

Failure Date: 02/27/2006

Ford issued a safety improvement campaign, campaign number: 03v482000, in November 2003, which stated that contamination of the filter in the fuel delivery module would eventually lead to blockage of the system. The replaced the fdm in my car in 2004 because my car was experiencing all the symptoms of the advisory. However, 2 years later, I am experiencing the same problems because the fix did not work. The filter once again became contaminated and the fuel pump once again needs to be replaced. I spoke to a customer service rep at Ford and although he was very understanding, the fact is the advisory was not a recall and they took care of the fdm. I am not sure what else can be done at this point because, this first recurrence happened while trying to merge onto 60+ mph traffic and my care refused to accelerate beyond 30 mph. If Ford says that the problem is fixed, then a repeat of the problem should not occur two years later.

12 Fuel Delivery problem of the 2002 Ford Focus

Failure Date: 02/24/2006

: the contact stated while driving 60 mph the vehicle lost power. The vehicle was taken to the dealership for inspection. Upon inspection, the dealership determined the fuel delivery module needed to be replaced, however no repairs were made. There is a NHTSA recall, # 03v482000, regarding the fuel system gasoline. The vehicle has the same problems as indicated in the recall; however it is not included in the recall due to the VIN.

13 Fuel Delivery problem of the 2000 Ford Focus

Failure Date: 12/13/2005

The contact states there is an NHTSA recall campaign 03v482000 concerning the filter in the fuel delivery module (fdm). This vehicle has the same problems as indicated in the recall, but it is not included in the recall due to VIN. The vehicle has not been repaired.

14 Fuel Delivery problem of the 2000 Ford Focus

Failure Date: 07/13/2005

Did a right turn to get on the freeway and lost most power. Hobbled along the shoulder at 20 mph for 1/2 a mile, then it stalled. Waited 1 minute, restarted and then it ran fine. No check-engine nor other lights came on until it stalled. Occured after driving 3 miles in July (paritally warm) with about 2 gallons of gas. Drove to kemp Ford and asked service dept about any recalls. Seemed to have no knowledge of similar incidents. Suggested possble fuel pump problem. The car has lost power three times previously at the same location for about 3-5 seconds, and then recovered.

16 Fuel Delivery problem of the 2003 Ford Focus

Failure Date: 02/06/2005

There was no failure or injuries. Just a problem with gas mileage. This vehicle gets the worse gas mileage of any auto I ever owned except my 1969 Plymouth gtx 440. I keep complaining but the problem is said to be with the engine type. Z-tec and that is why on the 2005 they finally changed the engine. I get approx 15-17 mpg in the city no air on and highway is approx 22-25. I have yet to get close to 300 miles on a tank full of fuel. Terrible terrible . I have paper from window and it states fuel mileage should be approx 25 city 30 highway. This vehicle not close. Runs well though. I would call this a failure of gas mileage factory estimate number of times in box below is conservative. I figured closer to 275-300.

17 Fuel Delivery problem of the 2000 Ford Focus

Failure Date: 10/01/2004

My husband and I was a trip to paintsville, ky, approximately 80 miles away from home. The car began to spit and sputter and progressively grew worst the farther we drove. The engine light came on and the car was stalling. We were stranded in paintsville, ky for several hours.

18 Fuel Delivery problem of the 2004 Ford Focus

20 Fuel Delivery problem of the 2000 Ford Focus

Failure Date: 05/04/2004

Washed car at local car wash, and car ran fine. Got home to do finishing touches and kept car running. Low on fuel, a little under the 1/4 line, but ran fine. Went back out about four hours later to go grocery shopping, and car would not start. All the lights and dinging would come on, but the engine wouldn't turn over. For 2 days my car sat in the parking lot not starting. I would go out in the morning to try and start it, and it would almost start, but wouldn't. I had aaa tow my car to a repair shop and when it got there, they called me and asked what I was trying to do. They got the car off the truck and it started right up. They are keeping my car over night to try and start it in the morning. I feel really dumb now and bad for wasting their time. What could the problem be?.

21 Fuel Delivery problem of the 2001 Ford Focus

Failure Date: 04/30/2004

My car stalled after coming around a sharp right hand turn. I restarted the engine and carried on a few more yards when the engine stalled again. I tried to start the car several more times because I was stuck at the entrance to the freeway on-ramp in very busy traffic. I could not get the car started and had to get it towed away. The mechanic at the repair outfit replaced the fuel filter and said that the old one was clogged up with dirt. This has never happened to me before. I did some research on the internet and found that I am not the only Focus owner with this problem. I think this relates to recall #03v482000.

22 Fuel Delivery problem of the 2001 Ford Focus

Failure Date: 03/08/2004

The recall notice clearly stated that the fuel filter was to be replaced free of charge if the vehicle was experiencing certain symptoms.

24 Fuel Delivery problem of the 2001 Ford Focus

Failure Date: 01/16/2004

The consumer received a recall letter NHTSA: #03v482000 concerning fuel delivery problem. The vehicle was taken tot he dealer but the dealer refused to honor the recall indicating there was not recall at this moment. The consumer was asked to bring the vehicle to the dealer for a diagnostic test which would cost $90. 00.

25 Fuel Delivery problem of the 2001 Ford Focus

Failure Date: 11/09/2003

I have a 2001 Ford Focus zx3. Around approximately 36,000 miles I started noticing the engine missing. Shortly after when the gas tank would be 1/4 full and below the car would experience what felt like fuel starvation, frequently in coordination with a sharp turn. The car would spit and sputter for a few seconds and then it would clear up and be fine. This usually occurred when accelerating on an interstate on ramp and was (and still is) potentially dangerous. The severity and frequency of the car stalling gradually became worse over a few months time. Now the car has approximately 46,000 miles on it. On November 9, 2003 while on the interstate traveling at 65 mph with 1/2 tank of gas the car started going through fuel starvation. It last a few seconds and then cleared up. This is a major safety hazard. Before the last incident, I thought that if I made sure the gas tank was not low the car would be okay. I did some research on this incident after the last incident. I searched the NHTSA site and focaljet. I saw that many people were suffering this problem and learned what the probable cause was. I believe the problem is the lining of the gas tank coming loose and keeping the fuel delivery module from taking up as much gas as the car needs to keep running. I contacted the local Ford dealership on November 11, 2003. The service manager told me he had heard of the problem, but had never had a customer that had a problem with it. I am taking the car in on November 18, 2003 to get repaired. To be clear, the car has not totally stalled due to this problem. It acts like it is going to die and the rpms go down. Pushing in the accelerator pedal does not make the rpms go up. The car runs very rough for several seconds (spitting and sputtering is how I describe it) and then clears out.

26 Fuel Delivery problem of the 2003 Ford Focus

Failure Date: 11/02/2003

Approximately 2 months ago, I was traveling at 70 mph in freeway traffic, and my 2003 Ford Focus quit accelerating. There was no prior warning. I began pumping the gas pedal, thinking a fuel line might be clogged, but it didn't seem to help. Finally, although somewhat chugging, I got enough acceleration to weave out of traffic and exit at an offramp. I pulled into the first parking lot, put my car in neutral, and let it idle. The engine sounded smooth. After a few minutes, I put the car back in drive and all was fine. I took my car to the san diego Ford dealership and was told no problem could be detected. I was advised to let the gas tank go to empty, add stp, and see if the problem ceased. I did so. Now, several weeks later, I was driving about 65mph down a dangerous winding grade near my home in morongo valley. Again, my car lost acceleration. I began pumping the gas pedal, but the motor just revved. It was as though my car had slipped into neutral. I glanced down at the automatic shift lever, to see if I had accidentally knocked it out of gear. It was still in drive. I began losing speed and had to coast down to the bottom of the grade, where there was parking accessibility. The same as before, I placed my car in park, let it idle for a couple of minutes, put it in drive, and it was fine. I took it to palm springs Ford, where it is right now. I received a phone message Friday evening, after work, and I was told the car has checked out fine. I had assumed this would happen, because the problem is so intermittent. The service attendant, mike bruni, stated he had documented the problem and I could pick up my car. I left a message on his voicemail, explaining my fear of a collision. There is definitely a major problem that must be fixed, or I feel my safety is in jeopardy. Until the problem is eliminated, I am reluctant to take my car home. I see the 2000-2001 Focus had a stalling problem also. Any relation?.

27 Fuel Delivery problem of the 2000 Ford Focus

Failure Date: 09/27/2003

2000 Ford Focus se/sw with at and ac stalls and or dies during normal driving conditions at high or low speeds. Its a repeating occurrence, after the car has been driven for a short while and the engine is at its normal operating temperature. While the above incidents take place, the cars warning systems do not indicate any apparent failure or overheating.

28 Fuel Delivery problem of the 2001 Ford Focus

Failure Date: 07/22/2003

Problem is ongoing. When the gas tank is less than 1/4 tank full, the engine hesitates, as if it's not getting enough fuel, when I try to resume speed after dropping from highway speed of 40+ to anything below that and then try to accelerate again. Problem typically occurs when merging onto a thruway from an access ramp. My mechanic speculates that fuel pump in gas tank doesn't get enough fuel because what fuel is left sloshes away from pump. Problem is long-standing, fuel filter has been replaced but didn't help. I chose to keep the tank full rather than spend $100s of dollars investigating problem. Special note: model is a station wagon with a manual transmission.

29 Fuel Delivery problem of the 2000 Ford Focus

Failure Date: 07/16/2003

Loses power on right hand turns (entering freeway especially). Stalls while driving. Began at about 42000 miles, with a quarter tank of gas, so always kept the tank at least half full. This week stalling has occurred with full tank, trying to accelerate from a stop going uphill. Air conditioner. 95000 mi currently. (average 3-4k miles/mo).

30 Fuel Delivery problem of the 2000 Ford Focus

Failure Date: 07/14/2003

Fuel delivery problem, possibly vapor lock/fuel pump related (a common $450-$600 repair way too early in the life of the 2000 & 2001 Ford Focus according to anecdotal e-mail evidence on internet chat sites), but equally likely to be related to ea02-022. 1st symptom was loss of power upon shifting into 2nd gear. Speed there was acceleration from 12 mph up into 2nd gear. The car recovered after a near stall with oncoming traffic approaching. 2nd incident was the next day (today) where I was shifting from around 25 mph into third gear in morning rush hour traffic and was nearly rear-ended because the vehicle stalled. Fortunately I was albe to pull over to the shoulder, whereupon the vehicle would not accelerate in any gear/was completely asthmatic. After two minutes in place the vehicle recovered and I was able to proceed. The mechanic wants to replace the fuel pump, fuel filter, fuel filter hose and fuel return line. . . . But if the problem is systemic to the fuel delivery system prior to the fuel pump pursuant to the referenced study, then a new pump will be able to draw fuel better/serve as a temporary fix. But, like the original, it too will fail early due to the higher demand on drawing the fuel through the blockage. The tank was approx. 1/4 full at the time of both incidents.

31 Fuel Delivery problem of the 2001 Ford Focus

Failure Date: 07/05/2003

Car lost fuel pressure and would not drive. After waiting until car cooled down car will start and drive. Car only has this problem when the tempature is above 90 degrees.

32 Fuel Delivery problem of the 2001 Ford Focus

Failure Date: 05/19/2003

Related to NHTSA action #ea02022 2001 Ford Focus with 38,000 miles; fuel starvation, sometimes to the point of stalling. Occurs when making long right turns (interstate on & off-ramps) - prevents me from merging safely into traffic. Problem is most severe with less than 1/2 a tank of gas.

33 Fuel Delivery problem of the 2000 Ford Focus

Failure Date: 05/16/2003

I have a 2000 Ford Focus w/ 2. 0 zetec engine that started having problems in may of 2002 when I was driving home on the expressway. Symptoms included the car lurching in higher rpms (necessary to maintain speed) and eventually the car was unable to maintain 55 mph and stalled on the expressway. It started up half an hour later, and I was able to limp home at 50 mph on the e-way. That problem disappeared after a week, and showed no signs of coming back until the next time I made a long car trip, when it did the same thing, but thankfully did not stall. The car continued to do this, and Ford dealers never did find anything wrong with the car, although one dealer charged me $400 to drain and clean the tank because of debris in the tank causing the car to stall on right turns. If not for the focaljet. Com website, I would be stuck with an out-of-warranty defective car that Ford flatly refused to cover during the warranty, but was happy to split the cost 50-50 one day after the warranty ended. After making another long trip and having the car sputtering at 4000 rpms, I dropped the fuel tank, removed 2 clogged filters from inside the gas tank fuel-sending unit, and the car has worked perfectly since then. I now have more power, smoother power delivery, no stalling or stumbling on the e-way or on right-hand turns, and the car no longer hesitates with the a/c on. These clogged filters have cost me countless hours, trips to the dealer, and $400 when the fix is just to let the external (and user-serviceable) fuel filter do its job. I have kept the 2 filters that I removed and taken pictures of the fuel canister that contained the clogged filters, in case there is any need to investigate them.

34 Fuel Delivery problem of the 2000 Ford Focus

Failure Date: 04/26/2003

My 2000 Ford Focus with 45,000 miles on it had been experiencing dramatic hesitation problems around highway exit curves/corners. This happened about 4 separate times, with it finally just stalling and breaking down the last time. Thank god the cars behind me were not speeding and didn't crash into my rear end. I was able to roll safely a few feet away to a small shoulder area. I turned the car off and waited a second before starting it again. It started right up with no problem. Also a few weeks earlier the car wouldn't start one morning. I had it towed to my local Ford dealer, who said it simply needed transmission fluid, they added it and it started up. But in the next two weeks is when it began hesitating on curves and feeling like it was going to cut off. But it had happened once prior to that, it hesitated after the curve and wouldn't accelerate even though I was stepping on the gas. When I took it back to Ford, they did a full inspection and told me I needed a new fuel delivery module, a new fuel filter and injection cleaning (the latter 2 being regular maintenance). But this fuel delivery module was major. And my extended warranty (not through Ford, but with gm major guard) almost didn't cover it, but decided to cover most of it. The Ford dealer told me that the cause for the fuel delivery module going bad was just basic wear and tear over time. . Read more...

35 Fuel Delivery problem of the 2002 Ford Focus

Failure Date: 03/28/2003

The consumer states that 2002 Ford Focus zx5 was having fuel economy problems. The consumer indicated the fuel delivery system was operating poorly and fuel was surging and hesitating.
