Steering Rack And Pinion problems of the 2008 Ford Taurus

2008 Taurus, bought new 11/7/7, 33 miles. 11/12/13 repair � 31,682 miles � rack and pinion steering started to fail while driving. Replaced for $889. 82, not under warranty; Ford covered none of the cost. 1/2/20 repair � 65,691 miles � rack and pinion steering failed again immediately after a 30-mile drive. Replaced for $954. 87 plus tax. Ford covered none of the cost.

2008 Ford Taurus x 135000 miles vehicle started being difficult to turn either way. My wife and 4 kids were almost in an accident because of it. All fluid levels were good. Changed out the rack and pinion and the power steering pump and the problem is still occurring. It occurs mostly at low speeds, but also occurs at higher speeds. This is obviously a huge issue because there are multiple reports online of other people having the same issue. We obviously need to be able to steer to drive and also quickly avoid any hazards on the road and we can't do that because of this issue.

Power steering went while driving in wet icy conditions. Seems to go in and out now, usually out. Checked fluid levels and they are fine. Seems to work making left turns with engine at higher rpms. Everything I'm reading points to the rack and pinion steering failure. This is a heavy car and dangerous to drive without power steering. 1 repair cost range between $800 and $1,300.

After having the vehicle for 5 months, the steering went out while tring to exit a driveway. Was told that due to my warranty drivetime would replace the power steering pump. After calling in to work on e occasions and waiting about 4 to 6 hours on each visit, just to be told that its my rack and pinion which drive time does not cover. Im not sure why they wouldnt cover the complete steering system. The mechanic said it will cost me 1000. . . 5 months of having the vehicle.

Steering wheel always been like I needed a wheel alignment and balancing but then got tires checked out ok then steering wheel got hard to turn to the left and found out the rack and pinion very dangerous because I was driving home and tried to turn left and almost broke my wrist.

As I was out running errands and backing in to park my 2008 Ford Taurus x, it became very difficult to turn the steering wheel in either direction. The parts are still under warranty and the repair shop has replaced the pump - which they stated was not working at all, but my steering is still not functioning. This is the third time I'm making this repair, clearly it's a symptom and not the real issue. When is Ford going to address this problem?!.

Was driving along parkway drive and try to turn into a side street and after making that turn the steering wheel got very tight I first taught that my rack and pinion went bad but there is no sign of leak or damage to any parts if it was one side I would have think I look over some thing and miss some thing but it is hard to steer both sides at any speed.

I currently have 60,000 miles on the car and am getting the same noise with the replacement parts. Is this a common problem with this model and has there been any recalls associated with this issue?.

Driving normally when steering control/assist was suddenly lost causing the steering to bias to the left causing the vehicle to suddenly veer to the left. Braking and extreme physical effort to recover control by rotating steering wheel to the hard right had to be maintained to maintain the vehicle on a strait-away course. Steering shuddered violently while attempting to maintain a straight-line path. Brought vehicle to authorized Ford dealer (brondes Ford, maumee, OH) for repairs. Catastrophic failure of the steering rack part of the rack and pinion steering gear was cause. Metal debris from this catastrophic component failure had to be flushed from the steering hydraulic system during the repair process; entire rack assembly was replaced which necessitated complete front-end alignment. Cost for repairs exceeded $1,000. 00. Vehicle is well-maintained, garage-stored and has never been in any collision and/or road hazard encounter of any kind.

The rack pinion assembly needs replacing after only 29431 miles. The dealer also recommends replacing the sway bar assembly; however, no physical damage to the sway bar assembly is evident. The rack and pinion has not degraded to the point of binding or inhibiting steering at this time. But, it obviously will do so in the future and requires attention. I note that this is a frequent occurrence with this assembly based on other complaints at this site. I have written to Ford ([xxx]) but with no response to date. The failure was diagnosed on 1/25/2012 after my complaining about a pop in the steering assembly during turns. No other incident occurred. Turning left is difficult at times. As others have said, Ford knows there is an issue as it is in TSB 09-5-7. Dealer first replaced power steering pump, which wasn't the fix. Now the rack and pinion needs to be replaced. Problem is intermittent so you don't know if you'll have power steering or not when attempting a turn.

The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who replaced the power steering gear. The failure had not recurred. The failure mileage was 41,000 and the current mileage was 42,814. 1. The problem occurred at the end of a 1600 mile drive when turning into residence driveway. The problem then persisted until repaired. 2. Loss of power steering assist, primarily for right turns. 3. Dealer replaced, at my cost, the rack and pinion assembly per released technical service bulletin which recognized this as an existing problem.
