Ford Taurus owners have reported 43 problems related to engine belts and pulleys (under the engine and engine cooling category).
When starting off from traffic light the car would start to move and then almost shut down. Another time I was stopped at a stop sign and when I started out it was like someone slammed on the brakes. The seat belt tightened very hard on my neck.

The car would speed up by itself from fault of throttle control assembly, alternator had to be replaced, windshield wiper hose assembly, the ac compressor had to be completely replaced, accumulator or receiver drier had to be replaced, as well as replacement of the compressor drive belt, evaporator orifice belt, serpentine belt tensioner, idler pulley, belt tensioner, on another recent occasion, the Ford was idling high and when driving, would speed up to around 4000 to 4500 rpms, on its own replacement of gasket all spark plugs, valve assembly, and another kit 11794 to counter the revving engine and throttle. . Also the power steering was off in the car,and it could not maintain an alignment, as you drove the steering wheel would jerk and shake. Odd noises emanating from the left and right rear of the car resembling a wheel bearing also will probably result in further repairs. The work was done at mileage 85462. Today it is 102k and the Ford keeps up with its seeming reputation of being "found on road dead". . . Or "fix or repair daily". Today completed by a Ford dealer and a military shop, the torque converter is broken. The car will start and rev, but when placed in drive or reverse it will not engage and remains in place.

2002 Ford Taurus almost got on fire on 11/2/11. There was gray smoke and horrible burning smell coming out of the front of Ford car. Called the police dept, and came and found out a belt broke. . . . If it were not for the police persons that came to let me know what the problem is and what to do, along with the fact (and luck) I had that I was not driving on the street with speed, the entire vehicle could have caught on fire and produce even more damages for myself and anyone that could be around. Ford, tk, and firestone has the details of all problems on this vehicle and what has been repaired.

2003 Ford Taurus. Consumer states problems with coil springs
the consumer questioned the lack of a recall for an obvious safety problem and perhaps defective material. The front and rear coil springs ruptured on the consumers vehicle. The ball joints, front stabilizer and serpentine belt all had to be replaced on different occasions. The caliper froze, and the rotors were warped. Updated consumer letter 10/27/10.

I purchased a vehicle from some [xxx] and I haven't had the car for 30 days and the vehicles is unsafe has had me almost in some accident due to the unsafe of the car. I took the car back to the place where I purchased it and they keep on telling me its my fault the car is giving me problems. I asked them if I can just get my money back and when I advise them of that they talk in their language to me where I don't understand. I have two children that are 10 and 4 ; the car is not safe. The incident that went wrong with the car is it over heated cut off on the highway while I had the children in the car, also after I took it back to them they fixed it ran fine then the following week after that the belt that I had initially told them about the first time came offthe next week which could spark a fuse while im driving and catch on fire so they advise me to have it towed which they had advise me to do and they took on that responsibility but the car engine light is on it has became a hardship with me and my family and it now sounds like the brakes is going wrong now I just want my money back so I can purchase another reliable transportation for me and my family.

My 2005 Ford Taurus seems to have a mysterious problem that two dealerships and my mechanic cannot recreate. The problem does not occur on a regular basis. The problem is when the brake pedal is depressed, the abs light and check brake signal flashes, and then the engine light comes on, the battery light comes on and the car stalls. . . Stops dead in its track. If does not happen on a cold start only after the car has been running during the day. I took it to one Ford dealership and they replaced engine intake value. That seemed to work for about 1 year. One year to the day, it starts again. The next Ford dealership had it for about 5 days and could not re-create the problem. However, they replace the air intake valve, spark plugs and a new belt. The problem occurred 5 days later but much worse. The car stalled 4 times in one trip. The following day, it worked on the cold start and 4 hours later, it stalled twice going 1500 feet. There is something wrong with the car no one can fix it. The diagnostic test machine shows no error.
2000 Ford Taurus serpentine belt broke and lost control then went off the left side of the ramp and into a ditch. The serpentine belt had overheated. The consumer stated the belt was replaced within the last year. The officer noticed a puddle of anti-freeze on the ground under the right side of the engine. The rear bumper was damaged. (ohio traffic crash report # 10-0231-89) updated02/24/10.

I purchased this vehicle used and have had nothing but trouble since. The main issue is that it has had the potential to kill me,my family and passers by on 4 separate occasions . To start with we replaced all of the pulleys on the vehicle last winter, due to a constant squealing noise that replacing the belt did not fix. This cost a small fortune as we broke several tools (and 4 tensioner pulley's) as did 3 mechanics trying to get the pulleys back on. Ford was absolutely no help, they wanted to charge 300 or more dollars to attempt the job, their quote was something like "those things are a pain in the a@# and we never know what we're looking at with labor when we get one in!" after nearly 2 weeks we completed the work and many dollars later only to later discover that when we drive it in the rain the belt comes off! as you can imagine this is not exactly fun when on a country road in the rain with your child at 55 mph and you suddenly have no control of your car. As was the case with me the first time by the time I pulled into my driveway 2 miles later I had something plastic smoking on the right front side and severe overheating issues!!! this has happened 3 times since, once leaving me stranded at wal-mart,once in a friends driveway and most recently after 2 days of rain I decided to take my kids to the end of the raod to the bus stop(this is only 80 feet or so away) and I hadn't been anywhere and hit no puddles out of fear, and yet still lost the belt coming back to my driveway. My child had a seizure at school a week and a half ago, 20 miles from me and I had to drive in the rains from tropical storm gustav to a family members house and get a ride to the hospital to be with my child. I am having to say no to work(substitute teaching) when it's raining again in fear of wrecking and or being stuck somewhere and can't sell it because it has these problems. We also have had major problems with the fan's burning out and the front tires wearing down.
2002 Ford Taurus with broken rear coil springs and other problems. Consumer states the coils springs broke, tires are wobbling, and the belt tensioner lost power steering.
The contact owns a 2001 Ford Taurus. The brake light stayed lit when the engine was off. The Ford dealer replaced the stop lamp switch harness. Car started to miss badly at stops and eventually would not accelerate while shaking violently. Car then stalled on the highway while my wife was traveling at 70 miles per hour. This was a very dangerous occurrence that eventually led me to surrender the car even with the consequences to my credit.

Consumer vehicle made a loud screeching noise and then died. *** nar received 10-12-** when the vehicle went through puddles the consumer heard a loud noise on the passenger side which was followed by the power steering locking up and stalling. The dealer concluded that the problem was the crank pulley, tensioner or idler pulley. The dealer also replaced the serpentine belt. The consumer requested reimbursement from the manufacturer.
Went out of town for the day, car starting making noises. Noises seem to be intermediate, we cut our trip short and drove home. It is in the area of 100 miles home. When we got home I parked it till next day and had someone look at it. They said a bolt either fell out or broke and my hub assemply was falling apart. At that point they also tell me I was lucky that the pulley didn't freeze up on me because I would have lost all power. At 65 mph coming home we could have been killed. I called my Ford dealer and they suggested that I get it to a Ford dealer here and let them look at it. I had it towed the next day and they veriified the same information. They said I needed to replace the a/c compressor, clutch, pulley and a coil. I did speak to Ford and they didn't seem to think that they should assit in any repairs because my warranty expired. My biggest thing is that the car was falling apart while driving down the road. It was not due from neglect or an accident. Their lack of concern was disturbing. I have not repaired it as of yet but when I do I will keep the old parts.
Complaint regarding the 2001 Ford Taurus front coil spring recall repairs. Recall campaign#04v332000. The consumer was driving home when the tire blewout because it was ripped completely around due to a rear cracked coil spring. The consumer had to replace 3 serpentine belts.
The consumer owns a 2000 Ford Taurus. While driving on the road the rear spring coil went into the left rear tire and caused it to blow out. The vehicle was towed by a flat bed truck to a local dealer. The consumer was without a car for several days. The tire was replaced. There was no crash and no injuries. (11/29/05) the consumer was in the passing lane of a four lane highway when the incident occurred, but fortunately the consumer was able to keep the vehicle under control. The serpentine belt cracked.
I have a 2001 Ford Taurus station wagon with a little over 56,000 miles on it. I turned off the engine at a long stop light & when I turned it back on, I had no power steering. I was able to drive the car the remaining mile to work with great difficulty. When I got to work I noticed the serpentine belt had broke. After work, I was able to drive the car 2 miles to a garage for repairs, once again without power steering. The garage stated that the reason the serpentine belt broke was that the bearings in the air conditioning clutch were seized which caused the clutch to lock up. This caused tremendous friction on the serpentine belt causing it to break. The mechanic showed me the air conditioning clutch with the seized bearings & also stated that the bolt that holds the clutch to the engine was about to come off & that would have caused the clutch to come off the engine. The shop manager stated that this problem should never happen to a vehicle with this amount of miles on it, but he had noticed this problem lately with newer model Fords. This problem did not cause an accident as I lost power steering when the vehicle was not moving. I am also a muscular man, so I was able to steer the vehicle at low speeds worth great difficulty. However, if this had happened at a highway speed with my wife or my teenage daughter driving, they would not have been able to control the vehicle & would probably have crashed potentially causing serious injury or death. I would like this problem investigated to see if there is a design problem with the air conditioning clutch on late model Fords.
Alternator belts breaking. New alternator belt lasting for only 1 mile, then shredding again. Had to get entire pulley system replaced.
When starting vehicle it began to shake, and then the check engine light came on. Drove the vehicle home but at a very slow pace. She vehicle acted as if it did not want to go. Consumer stated last week the vehicle would not start at all. She had the vehicle towed to a mechanic, who determined that vehicle needed a timing belt, which she had put on.
While driving vehicle shut down . Consumer was able to restart vehicle, and drove it to the dealer. Mechanic informed consumer that the problem could not be duplicated. Consumer advised the mechanic that this problem occurred more than once. Mechanic determined that a lifter and pulley belt had been replaced.
Vehicle loses power steering after driving through standing water. Serpentine belt squeals for about 20 seconds and when the noise stops the steering power is restored.

Headlights would only work some of the time. Dealer replaced defective headlight switch. The engine developed a high pitched squeal, almost like a belt squeal. It was determined the cam synchronizer was defective. At that time the cam position sensor was also found to be defective. The magnet was falling out. The coolant overflow bottle was discolored, leaking and full of cracks causing antifreeze to pour out of the cooling system. Ford acknowledges there is a bank to bank coolant flow imbalance on some 1996 model year Taurus leading to contaminated/corroded coolant. Recall 98b23 was performed. But the damage was already done to the rest of the cooling system.
When turning right at a street corner in the rain the power steering will momentarily fail. The drive belt will make a slight squeal when it re-engages. It appears that there is inadequage splash shielding inside the right hand wheel well such that water is thrown up on the drive belt and crankshaft pully by the cocked wheel. The drive belt is relatively new but the problem also occurred with the oem belt.
