Nine problems related to brake master cylinder have been reported for the 1996 GMC Jimmy.
The contact owns a 1996 GMC Jimmy. While driving at 30 mph, the contact had to abruptly depress the brake pedal. He then heard a grinding sound coming from the tires. The brakes were changed by an independent mechanic, but the noise persisted. Afterwards, the master cylinder was repaired and the brakes, rotors, and pads were replaced. There was a slight improvement; however, the noise eventually returned periodically. The VIN was unknown. The failure mileage was 125,000 and current mileage was 133,000.
Pulled out of parking lot on to road. Applied brakes while approaching a light. Even with both feet on the brake pedal the 1996 GMC Jimmy barely came to a stop from a distance of 6 car lengths going 30 mph. Narrowly avoided rear-ending vehicle in front of me. This was not the first time but the closet encounter. Before this incident I had the front rotors, disk pads, calipers, front flex lines, booster, vacumm hose and connector on engine to booster, master cyl. , and rear brake linings - replaced. Since then I had the vacumm checked from the engine to the booster and was told the booster was bad. I had the booster and masterc replaced again. Still no change. Pedal goes too far down and feels like it hits a brick followed by very weak breaking action.
When applying abs brakes pedal went to the floor, causing extended stopping distance , nearly resulting in a collision. Please give any further details. Consumer states he was advised that there was complete failure of the master cylinder abs unit had to be replaced, and new front brakes.
The abs system has malfunctioned many times. At first I did not pay attention to it, because I thought it was just light brake pressure. Then it started to loose pressure and keep going forward when stopping. I took it to the dealer and paid for a new master cylinder. Then it started malfunctioning again. I contacted the bbb and was told it wasn't covered under warranty and I had too much milage. Went back to dealer and they reprogrammed the computer unit, no charge. The ignition started locking and they repaired that for a fee. It too has gone back to locking when trying to start. Safety is a concern, still.
Anti-lock brakes failed numerous times on off-ramp. Almost caused serious accident. Brakes pads, rotors and master cylinder replaced with no improvement. I contacted general motors, they claim problem is caused by "stupid drivers" .
Loss of brakes, release pedal & pump until brakes return, master cyl replaced problem still continues.
When applying the brakes the vehicle would not stop. Dealer replaced master cylinder.
Master cylinder failed.
Brakes: when driving brake pedal goes completely to the floor and does not stop the vehicle. Had brake pads rotors and master cylinder replaced. Vehicle is in shop now. .
