GMC Sonoma owners have reported 1,038 problems for their cars built in the 10 model years listed in the chart below. The chart shows the number of problems reported during all service years for each model year of GMC Sonoma. The 1998 GMC Sonoma cars have the most problems reported (200 problems).
The following chart shows the 23 most common problems for GMC Sonoma cars. The number one most common problem is related to the vehicle's service brakes, hydraulic (199 problems). The second most common problem is related to the vehicle's visibility (128 problems).

It would not be fair to compare the older model year GMC Sonoma to a new one in terms of the problems reported since older vehicles have been in service longer and more problems should be reported. In order to compare the reliability across Sonoma model years, we use the PPMY index which is defined as the problems reported per thousand vehicles per Year. A smaller PPMY index implies a better reliability for the model year under study.
PPMY = P / S / Y * 1000
Where P = total problems reported during the life of a GMC Sonoma model year; S = total units sold of the model year; Y = years since the debut of the model year (the age of the vehicle).
The result is shown in Table 3.
Another way to measure the reliability across the model years of GMC Sonoma is to use the number of problems reported during the vehicles' first year in service, as shown in the Table 4.
