Honda Accord 2001 4-dr sab: passenger side rear front engine support completely rusted away due to ac leak. Driver side rear front subframe is completely fine, no rust. Mechanic said car is too dangerous to drive unless I invest in new subframe for over $1,200. My car only has 70,000 miles on it and I'm very disappointed it hasn't been recalled for clearly a defective ac leakage. I have found many forums with the same problem including the article center for auto safety requesting recall of 1. 5 million Honda Accords for rust issue in sub- frame and Honda Accords found with sub-frames rusted out by the nhou. I could have been seriously injured driving this car while I worked as a food delivery driver for grubhub. I deserve compensation, my passenger subframe is completely rusted out and hanging by a thread whereas my driver side subframe is completely fine. That doesn't just happen it should have been recalled.

Upon inspection of this vehicle, part of the front subframe had rusted through, from the air conditioner condenser hose emptying on top of it. Attached photos show the extent of visible damage; other damage within this structure is not visible to the eye. Honda refers to this part as the "rear beam," part number 50200-s87-a00. The steering rack and front suspension components attach to this part, along with the rear engine mount, and can cause loss of control of the vehicle, and serious personal injury. This is a very common and very dangerous flaw in this generation of Accord.
Subframe completely rusted through underneath air condition. Car 18 years old but has always been kept in the garage. Also it has only 70580 miles and has been in florida for a few years, and used only 3 mos. Per year.
Right side sub-frame, rear beam, k frame is completely rusted through from a/c drain line installed to drain directly onto the subframe. This causes the steering to flex substantially and According to my mechanic could cause the car steering to fail catastrophically or could allow the motor and transmission to fall out of the car. Anti-sway bar is completely broken away from the frame. Found by mechanic checking my car to determine what was wrong with the steering and cornering.

I was driving on city when I heard metal noise from right front passenger side I had it check ed and I was told that the k frame-subframe had rusted and cracked only on passenger side right I checked online and found out that a lot of people had this problem due that the ac was dripping water on top of it it was a manufacture defect.
The front subframe is rusted through on one side only. It's the passenger side where the ac drain hose dips on the frame. The car is in otherwise good shape and doesn't present any real issues but the rust is so bad that it is making the car very unsafe.
Passenger side rear subframe rusted and broke off I heard a clunking sound when I was going down the street on the way to work I turned the corner and heard a loud clunk sound and got under my car and looked and the passenger side rear subframe is broke off.
The ac drip tube is aimed right at the front passenger side subframe and rusts it out over time. Just recently I had the subframe totally fail and snap in half due to this rust. The scary part was that I had just gotten off the highway and was only going 5 mph when it happened. If it had happened five minutes sooner this would have been a much worse situation. Notice in the picture I attach that the whole corner of the subframe is rusted out even though the rest of the frame and body is rust free. This happened while making a turn in a flat parking lot at about 5 mph. This is a well-documented issue on all 97-02 Honda Accord and 00-03 Acura cl vehicles since they are the same body/platform. I went to a junkyard recently to see if I could find a good subframe to replace mine with and every single Honda Accord and Acura cl in the lot was rusted out exactly the same way. This clearly is a safety issue since the subframe has three of the four engine mounts on it and the suspension is all connected to it as well.

Subframe rust-out of front engine cradle back beam on right (passenger) side, both behind and in front of the lower control arm. Large hole in frame was noted during other repair work and matches numerous complaints and pictures of similar problems that can be found online. Dealer says there is no recall or other corrective action from Honda.
The subframe has rusted due to a design flaw by Honda . . . The ac drains on it. This creates a safety issue and the potential for a fatal crash to occur.
Takata recall I am writing you because I brought a car a little under a year ago. I was driving it 2 weeks ago and my breaks gave out it was my break line. I got the car looked at and my frame is rusted and caved in on my break line. I called the dealer the same day nomore then 30min after it happen. The father was not there which is the man who sold me the car at nehre service. He was on vacation he came home 5/16/18 which is 2weeks and a day of it happening. He told me that I need to call the Honda factory there was nothing he could do for me. I'm writing this complaint because by law you can not sale a car with a rusted, damaged or bruised frame. He refused to late me trade in when my payments was done which was back in September. I'm to the point where I don't know what to do. Please help me because I put 3000 dollars into this car at this man shop. Please get back to me, I almost lost my life because of this. Laquiesha otey.
The contact owns a 1998 Honda Accord. While driving various speeds, the upper control arm squeaked and was about to detach without warning. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed that the subframe was rusted out and the vehicle was unsafe to drive. The technician recommended that the entire subframe be replaced. The dealer was not contacted. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and stated that the vehicle was out of warranty. The failure was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 84,800.
While changing the front brakes on my car I noticed the right rear corner of my subframe was heavily rusted. Upon closer inspection the subframe has rusted through in several spots. Directly below the air conditioning drain tube I was able to put a finger through the metal with little to no pressure. The location of this drain tube allows water to drip directly onto the subframe. The opposite side of the subframe has barely any rust on it at all. Searching through the internet I found many reports and stories from owners of the 1998 to 2002 Honda Accords with the same issue. A walk through a local junkyard yesterday provides further proof that this is a design flaw and Honda needs to rectify this issue promptly.
The contact owns a 2002 Honda Accord. The contact stated that while having the vehicle inspected, he was informed by the inspector that the passenger side sub-frame was rusted and needed to be replaced. The contact did not notify a dealer. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 137,000.
Front passenger side, rear chamber of front subframe rust. Reports of a/c drain resulting in rust. Driver side of subframe, no visible rust.
Passenger side subframe has rusted just behind where the lower control arm connects. This rust is not visible when viewing from the underside of the vehicle when on a lift, making failure of the subframe imminent. Honda should admit a design flaw exists with the ac discharge and replace these bad frames. What a disgrace. Sad to say I will be switching brands. I prefer companies who step up to the plate to protect their customers. This failure is very hard to detect until it's too late. Shame on Honda. I already had my ball joints fail (recall exists for them) and I only hope my subframe holds out a little longer.
Upon a standard oil change at 160,000 miles, I was informed that the front sub frame had rusted through on the passenger and driver side. I was told to talk to a body shop immediately because the car wasn't "road safe". Looked into this a bit and found that this is a common problem with Accords from this time period due to the placement of the air conditioning drainpipe (which empties right onto the subframe) . The car for the most part is reliable, minus the transmission that failed at 130,000 miles. But a frame shouldn't be "rusted through" after 15 years! sounds unsafe, considering the amount of these cars that are still on the road. Called Honda today and was informed the repair would cost over $1200 with no goodwill on their end. Figured this was the best alternative to the situation.
Hit a pothole, and heard loud crack. Body shop found large crack in subframe and deemed unrepairable. Found large rusted area on subframe, which was deemed a "Honda defect" and state farm refused to cover the claim. Honda reports there was no recall.
I bought a 1999 Honda Accord ex for my niece. After driving it to get tires, I heard a clunk/scraping noise coming from the front passenger side of the vehicle. Upon further inspection, I notice the subframe is rusted clean through. Right underneath the a/c drain drip. The car drifts to the right. The upper ball joint is compramised. The sway bar mount bolts right to that area.
Subframe rust caused by mispositioned a/c drain pipe dropped my car off for her 200k tune in nh. The mechanic said the subframe underneath the front passenger seat was shot. I debated whether to spend $1100 for a used subframe and labor. Decided it was a gamble, but probably worth it. Dropped it off two days later and he showed me where. I grabbed the frame and it just crumbled. With the new subframe and tune, she runs like new, even at 200k. Later I did more research later and found that other people have had the same issue. I got the car up on a friend's lift and found the a/c drain hose. It was high up in the car and really short! it pointed directly at the subframe. I simply replaced the hose, clamped it on, then tied the end to a thingy further down, so that the opening pointed at the ground. Like $2 in parts and 20 minutes, and I'm an amateur. I'm disappointed that Honda never officially acknowledged this design defect. I get that they don't want to pay for subframe replacements - they're a business, yadda yadda. But it's such a basic oversight with an easy solution. Just a little bit more diligence on their part would have saved me over a thousand bucks. Subframe rust is a major safety issue. They deserve to be punished for such laziness and negligence. To nip this in the bud: yes, I live in new england. There's a lot of salt on the roads, but I wash the undercarriage regularly. And if it were general wear-n-tear, the entire subframe would have had similar levels of damage. However, the rot was localized directly under the a/c drain hose. Also, the dealership said nothing about subframe rust when I brought the car in for the airbag recall. Some 100 point inspection, huh?.
My Accord was making a clunking sound when hitting small bumps at all speeds. The sound was coming from the front right of the vehicle and was analyzed as unsafe to drive unless the front sub-frame was replaced. The passenger side front sub-frame was completely rusted out and was loose from the car's body and very dangerous to drive. Other areas of the sub-frame have minimal rust and don't have this issue. My mechanic has seen this issue in many other Honda Accords in this age range and says it's caused by the ac's condenser drain that's located right above that area of the sub-frame. Honda moved the drain location in the 2003/2004 model. The cost of the repair is in the $2500 area which is more than the car is worth. Honda should have issued a recall for such a major design flaw.
After bringing the car in for routine maintenance on the brakes, I was notified that the passenger side sub frame is completely rusted through and the car is no longer safe to drive. It was a huge surprise as the car has had regular maintenance and does not have significant rust on any other location. I was told that any pot hole or large bump could have broken the frame and completely dislodged the engine. I was told it was a design issue that caused isolated rusting on an important part of the frame.
The sub frame is rusted away on the passenger side. I noticed it while I was driving. If I would've kept driving the vehicle and the rusted frame gave way, me and my kids or other passengers in vehicles on the road could have been injured or even killed.
I was driving on the highway at normal speed and as I was making a turn I heard a loud popping sound from the front of my vehicle. I took the car to an independent mechanic who after inspecting the vehicle informed me that my passenger side sub-frame arm had rusted off and snapped. This came as a surprised, because the car was inspected for a state inspection less then a week before the said incident and it had passed the state inspection. I was told the vehicle was not safe to drive. I was told by the technician that the ac hose were placed directly above the sub-frame and every time the ac was used it would leak onto the sub frame and cause it to rust. The other sub-frame arm had no indication of rust at all. This is a case of complete negligence by the manufacturer. The manufacturer has designed a flawed product and has filed to address the issue and take accountability for their actions. No recall was issued. No statement made. The owner cannot be held responsible for the cost of the repairs as the product that was manufactured by Honda has initial design flaws which directly attributed to the frailer of a major structural component of the vehicle. There is no doubt in my mind that the manufacturer had and has been fully aware of this problem. A recall must be issued to prevent most of all fatalities and help alleviate the financial burden placed upon the owners as the repairs are often times very costly.
2002 Honda Accord with 115,000 miles making clunking noises when driven, made worse with turns. Took to a master mechanic 2 days ago who initially said that the sway bar was loose and needed to be replaced. He called me the next day and said that it's a lot worse than just the sway bar, that the sub frame is rusted on the passenger side and there's a hole. If the sub frame breaks while driving, it could be a very bad situation causing an accident. The vehicle is not drivable until repaired and the cost could exceed the value of the car if a new sub frame is used. In the past 4 years I have purchased 3 Honda vehicles, this Accord, a 2010 civic, and a 2010 crv, but if Honda doesn't take ownership of this design flaw (where the ac drain is constantly dripping on the sub frame causing it to rust) and do the right thing, I will never purchase another Honda in my life. I bought this car 2 years ago from a local dealership who I no longer trust and will never deal with again. You can't tell me that they didn't know about the rust when they sold me this vehicle for my then 16-year old daughter. I'm disgusted with the dealership as well as Honda. I am also very disappointed with the clear coat peeling off the body of the car. It looks awful.
Every time I drove the car the front passenger side was making noises at the wheel. I had my mechanic take the wheel off to check it. He noticed that the subframe is completely rusted through. I tried to purchase the part from Honda estore and they don't sell a subfame so I called over 25 used parts stores and all 25 or so places told me the same thing "on every 1999-2002 Honda that we've seen that part is rusted away". I would like to know why this part has not been recalled since it is such a large problem with everyone that I've spoke to.
The contact owns a 2000 Honda Accord. The contact stated that while driving at various speeds, an abnormal ticking noise emitted from the front passenger side of the engine. The contact discovered that the sub frame was rusted near the passenger side tire. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, where it was diagnosed that sub frame was rusted. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 223,000.
Subframe rusted, passenger side. Not sure how long I drove this unsafe vehicle with the bad frame.
