Hyundai Azera owners have reported 67 problems related to steering (under the steering category). The most recently reported issues are listed below. Also please check out the statistics and reliability analysis of Hyundai Azera based on all problems reported for the Azera.
This is happened too many times even though in frequent and it is very unsafe when it happens on the open road as the steering will be completely unavailable most likely relative to the eps. No incident yet but that is only because I’m a good driver, but it sure is unsafe and scary and something needs to be done as I’ve read many online people having the same issue with this vehicle.

Vehicle steering wheel started giving a lag feedback about 9 months to 1 year ago. About 5 weeks ago, started noticing loud metal noise when going over bump with steering wheel being rotated. Did some research to find similar issues on Azera and many Hyundai sonata and other vehicles where steering wheel rubber coupler were worn out. Later also saw many complains here for this vehicle alone. I found no recall has been giving to the Azera, while it was giving to sonata and others. Had to take it to a mechanic to replace it, which charged for 4 hours of labor, and <$10 of part. The rubber couple was indeed worn out.

When traveling at speeds above 50 mph, my steering has a dead-spot, on-center. At this steering position when trying to keep the car straight on the road or highway, the steering wheel sticks and requires force to keep my car heading straight.
50 mph dry, clear and straight road, right rear control arm broke causing the rear wheel to become detached from the car and causing the car to careen into oncoming lane before correcting and landing in the right-hand ditch. Could have been a disaster and only by grace was this not a disaster for me and an unknown oncoming car. Event was witnessed by people in 2 other cars and they both stopped and gave their names.
Steering problem started with an annoying dead spot of approximately 1/2 inch on center and now has expanded to approximately 2" accompanied by severe rattling on rough surfaces. Checked this condition on u-tube and found it to be caused by a crumbling steering coupler in the electric steering assist unit. This same coupler was recalled in most Hyundai models except the azura. I believe its failure to be as grave a safety concern as it was in other models and erodes my confidence in Hyundai and in an otherwise trouble-free vehicle.
The contact owns a 2013 Hyundai Azera. The contact stated while driving approximately 5 mph and pulling into his driveway, there was a clunking noise coming from the steering column. The contact stated no warning light was illuminated. The contact had not taken the vehicle to a local dealer. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The contact researched online and found that there were complaints about the failure of the steering coupler. The manufacturer had been informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 91,000.
Mdps coupler failure similar to failure included in warranty extensions for sonatas/elantras. Since Azera is not part of the recall, I ended up paying for the repairs. Contacted Hyundaiusa and lodged a complaint (case number - 20194065). I was told that reimbursement will not be given. Hence bringing to your attention to get this resolved. Thanks! bhuvaneswari.

2 months ago my car steering wheel started to make clunky noises which is due to the flexible steering coupler and should be addressed as factory recall for the safety of everyone.
The Azera uses the same part # for the steering coupler that was recalled on the sonata and elantra. This same part # is used in 3 other models which Hyundai did not recall and somehow was let off the hook for addressing. I have replaced one in a 2014 santa fe and 2013 Azera. I want to make sure the NHTSA is aware of the fact that the same part is used across multiple models, yet only 2 were recalled. This is unfair that we have to pay $400 for each car to replace a 5 dollar part that Hyundai has recalled. Below are the models and part numbers. Any help is greatly appreciated. . Read more...
The contact owns a 2013 Hyundai Azera. The contact stated that while driving at various speeds, there was a clicking sound in the steering wheel while turning to the left or the right. The contact stated that the longer the vehicle was driven, the louder the sound got. The contact took the vehicle to a certified mechanic who stated that the failure was with the steering coupler. The vehicle had not been repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and confirmed that the vehicle was not covered under the extended warranty. The approximate failure mileage was 61,000.
Vibration and banging and shudder felt from the steering column when driving over uneven pavement. The effect was more pronounced at higher speeds > 50 mph. A certified mechanic found the steering coupler badly worn and was replaced.
The contact owns a 2013 Hyundai Azera. The contact stated while driving 60 mph, the steering wheel started shuddering and was making an abnormal clicking sound. There were no warning lights illuminated. The contact was able to continue driving. The contact stated that the failure had been reoccurring intermittently. The dealer was not notified of the failure. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and a case was opened. The failure mileage was approximately 66,000. The VIN was not available.
I had to get the coupling replaced after my steering started knocking loudly about 5 to 6 months ago. Now I'm having problems with the crank shaft sensor.
The steering wheel coupler is defective. Steering became unstable. Rattle and shaking. It’s terrifying to drive and not know what’s wrong. Got told it was tires. Got told it was the alignment. Got told that it had something to do with the drive train. . Too find out that it’s a $11 part. And to discover that elantra and sonata owners were notified but not Azera owners is just negligent behavior.
Clunking noise and shaking in the steering wheel. Initial research points to steering coupler which has been recalled on various other Hyundai models but not the Azera ( this is a frequent occurrence with Hyundai recalls since not as many Azeras were sold) the mechanic I took it to would not replace just the couple and quoted replacing the entire rack and pinion.
While driving, the steering became suddenly loose and nearly took me off the road. I was able to get the vehicle the short distance home, but the steering wheel now feels broken and detached. There was no warning. The passenger airbag light stays on all the time. I have found that both issues and parts are actually covered in other years, but not mine, which I have confirmed with a local dealer. With only 68800 miles, these should both be fully covered manufacturer repair since they are safety-related and there are numerous similar reports. There was no "crash" or "injury" per the questions below, but there should have been, and there was not, only because I was able to regain just enough control of the car to avoid a crash. If someone else was driving, it would most certainly have been a crash with injuries, possibly involving other vehicles if I didn't happen to be close to home and the only car around at the time. Based on my experience so far, I don't think I will be owning or buying any Hyundai products any time soon and will likely sell this one if I can get it repaired. It is sitting in my garage useless right now. I have now submitted a contact request to Hyundaiusa. Com asking for them to cover these repairs, and will update with their response.
The steering wheel of my 2013 Hyundai Azera malfunctions. It makes a clicking noise when I move the steering wheel either clockwise or anti clockwise. The clicking noise dramatically increases when the road is not smooth. It started since almost a month back. After doing some research I found that this seems to be a common problem on many Hyundai models. There are many youtube videos showing this same problem that I am facing in my car. Here is one such link from youtube, and its description section pointed me about the recall of this part. Https://youtu. Be/lrkarm38wfc Hyundai had also issued a recall to change the steering coupler that seems to be faulty. The vehicles associated with the recall can be seen here https://autoservice. Hyundaiusa. Com/txx7/micrositetemplate/micrositetemplatevinvalidate/2689 it seems Hyundai is covering only sonata and elantra models. Since the same problem exists on Azera as well, I request you to please look into this matter as many folks had reported that the steering could fail to respond due to this issue. It is also a safety issue if the steering fails to respond while driving on the road on freeway. I can understand that Hyundai might have not received so much complains as the number of cars sold for sonata and elanatra models is significantly higher compared to Azera model. But if this is a safety issue and if the same parts are used in Azera model, I believe the recall should apply for Azera as well. The problem is easily reproducible. There is no warning lights or any messages or symptoms prior to failure.
The contact owns a 2017 Hyundai Azera. The contact stated while driving 60 mph, the steering wheel ceased and failed to move freely. There was no warning light illuminated. The contact stated that he experienced the failure on several occasions. The vehicle was not diagnosed nor repaired. A dealer was not contacted. The manufacturer had not been informed of the failure. The failure mileage was 69,110.

There is a clicking sound in the steering wheel when turning. The steering coupling needs to be replaced. This was a recall for 208-2015 sonata's, elantra's and santa fe's, but not the Azera. It is the same part in all models. This is a significant safety issue that Hyundai is aware of, but did not recall the Azera's as well.
The steering malfunctioned. When we tried to turn the wheel the it would slip and the car would not respond or suddenly would. It was very scary because the car could not be steered properly. We took it to the dealer who said the steering coupler had failed and needed to be replaced. This component has been recalled and/or warranty extended to cover in other Hyundai models for the same reason but it has not yet been recalled in the Azera. We discussed this with Hyundai customer service who confirmed. It was repaired by Hyundai of south brunswick NJ for $452. 34. There is a technical service bulletin describing the problem. This is a common, dangerous Azera failure and should be remedied as it has been for other models.
The steering on this vehicle started to have some play in it, including some intense vibrating as I drove down the road. My analysis is that the coupler within the steering motor is made of a flimsy material that breaks down relatively easily. This issue has obviously become clear to Hyundai, as they have created an updated version of the coupler. However, the issue is serious enough that there are many people who have shared about it on forums/youtube/etc. , and is a legitimate danger to drivers, as complete failure of the part could result in failed steering while driving.
Happened a couple of times, car starts swerving into other lanes for a few seconds and cannot control car.
Steering wheel clicking and rattles when going over bumps while in motion. Clicking happens when stationary.
Airbag light comes on intermittently while driving. Steering locks as the car is driven at highway speeds and requires force to adjust. It presents a challenge when staying in a lane and need to do slight adjustments to stay in lane. Took it to a dealer about a year ago and they could not duplicate the issue.
Clicking in steering wheel moving left and right. As it progressed a clunking/rattling noise would occur on pot holes or cracks in pavement. Noise occurs at any posted speeds.
The contact owns 2006 Hyundai Azera. The contact stated that after exiting the highway, the vehicle loss power steering assist and ended up in a ditch on the side of the roadway. The abs warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was towed to green Hyundai (2955 us-93 s, kalispell, mt 59901) where the vehicle was diagnosed with abs failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 170,000.

The steering would almost lock up when trying to make small adjustments. Doesn't seem to happen (or I have not not noticed it) in town, but definitely noticable during highway driving. I feel this to be a hazard in case I need to make a sudden steering change. Brought it in to the dealership, and they indicated it was an alignment issue, not covered under warranty. Paid $120 for alignment and it seemed to be ok for a little bit. Issue is back now 11,000 miles later. I found a TSB on a similar issue, which I noted to the dealership, and they informed me that they were not related.

On my 2012 Hyundai Azera the steering coupler is worn out, clunking and needs to be replaced. The sonata and and tuscon are recalled for this same part. The Azera should be as well!.
The steering makes a clunking sound when the wheel is turned. Mechanic said it's a faulty "rubber" star shaped part that has been recalled on other vehicles. Our cost to fix will be $289! the Azera should have been included under the recall but so far it has not.
I have owned 3 Hyundai Azeras; a 2007, a 2013 and now a 2017. I never had any issues with the steering on my 2007 or 2013. The steering on my current vehicle "locks" as I am driving, mostly on the highway but has also happened at lower speeds and also in reverse. The steering doesn't respond when I try to make minor adjustments driving down the highway and feels as if it's locked in place. It will eventually "give" with a jerking motion. My car has approximately 8500 miles and I did not notice this issue when I purchased it new and don't remember exactly when it started but it happens consistently now. I am very concerned with this as occasionally it feels as though it's not going to respond at all. I have seen similar complaints online and wonder if Hyundai is going to issue a recall to fix this problem.
Hit a bump in road and lost control of car. Unstable bouncing ?in motion.
During our first trip on the interstate I noticed that when trying to correct the steering, either right or left, the car would not immediately respond. Then after just a second or two something would break loose allowing the vehicle to respond to my request. I. E. Turn left or right! it's as if their is something stopping it from responding until I apply more pressure to my pull. I immediately took it to the dealer, and was told that is the "electronic steering" mechanism and that that is normal, and there is no reason to be alarmed. Over thanksgiving I made a 2,500 mile round trip to indiana (all interstate). During the trip, the same thing!! after stopping for a short period, and then back on the road, I noticed I would have to drive a short distance before it began to act up again. It is very pronounced and obvious on interstate driving. I have the fear that it could lock up permanently. I purchased this vehicle, with only 5,100 miles on 7/1/2019. It now has 8,622 miles. I might also point out that I also have the identical car in a 2016 with the same steering, that I purchased new. It now has over 36,000 miles and I have had absolutely no problems. Because of the excellent ratings and the fact that I have had no problems with the 2016, I purchased the used 2017 for my wife. When I took my car to the shop they did not provide me with a ticket or invoice of any kind, although they did write a ticket.
Owner and inspection mechanic noticed and observed steering wheel clunking and banging from left to right. Known problem with similar models and use the same part that is defective! 2012 Hyundai Azera steering coupler is faulty and needed replaced per Hyundai dealer and would cost us $282. 00 plus tax. They would not cover the part which is around $10. 00 but want a lot of money for labor. Thankfully we had an extended warranty but we still should have not had to pay for a faulty part. Its happening to many other Hyundai models that use the same part. Car was dangerous to drive feeling the banging while driving and at a stop. Had car repaired and. . Wow no more banging. . Vibrations.
The steering on my car is making clicking clanking noises, the same symptoms that other Azera owners are reporting a defective steering coupler.
