#5 - Engine problem of the 2006 Hyundai Sonata
The vehicle identification number (VIN) of this Hyundai Sonata is 5NPET46C66_. A fire started in the engine of my two-month-old 2006 Hyundai Sonata after it had been parked for approximately five hours. On the night that this happened, I had driven my Sonata three hours from atlanta, GA to albany, GA and parked in my driveway at about 5:30pm. I subsequently ran a local errand and parked my car for the evening at 7:30pm. The car was parked about 2. 5-3 feet behind my mother's 1994 Chevrolet corsica. Around 12:30 midnight, my next door neighbor was banging on my window, yelling, "you have to get out of the house, your car is on fire!" flames shot up 5-6 feet in the air and ignited the trunk of my mother's car. Trees nearby were singed, and melted metal and rubber damaged the driveway. Thanks to my neighbor's quick action, the flames did not reach the fuel tank of my mother's car or our house, thereby averting a real disaster. The fire department extinguished the fire and determined that the fire started in the engine. It became clear that the local service center, manufacturer and insurance company were not the parties responsible for conducting the investigation into the exact cause of the fire. Wider consumer awareness of the NHTSA and the complaint-to-recall process will enhance safety by encouraging all parties to take appropriate action and responsibility. It was Sep. 14, 2006 when this engine issue occurred.

#6 - Engine problem of the 2005 Hyundai Sonata
The vehicle having this issue was a 2005 Hyundai Sonata. The VIN of this vehicle is KMHWF35H05_. I purchased the vehicle used in 12/2005 from a non-Hyundai dealer. I began to notice that the car periodically did not shut off immediately when the key is turned to the off position. It shudders for a few seconds, then goes off. I have contacted the manufacturer and have been to the Hyundai dealer more than 3 times with this complaint beginning February/2006. I also noticed that the car vibrates/revs up when at a red light. This is very irritating since the vibration also goes through to the steering wheel and causes my arms and hands to vibrate also. Initially, I was told that all of this was normal - however I did not experience any of this when I rented the same type of car last year. Then I was told that there is a loose engine mount. I then had two experiences within one week where the car did not start - lights, radio, a/c still came on - but the car did not start. I had to be towed to the dealership. The first time, they changed a relay and the second time, after keeping the car for one week they changed the entire fuse box. I haven't had a problem with the car starting since, however the vibration is getting worse, the car still does not shut off immediately, and now it revs to the point that the car feels like it is trying to pull off before I take my foot off of the brake pedal. I pulled a car history report that revealed that the car failed emissions, had a left door replaced, and had a starter assembly replaced. None of this was disclosed at the time of purchase and was not included on the car history report provided by the selling dealer - otherwise, I would have never purchased the vehicle. When I questioned a residue behind the radio station display panel, I was told by the selling dealer that it could have happened as a result of the aaa inspection since they sometimes take down the dashboard. It was Feb. 1, 2006 when this engine issue happened.

#12 - Engine problem of the 2001 Hyundai Sonata
The vehicle having this issue was a 2001 Hyundai Sonata. Engine misses and backfires through the intake. The major problem is when the engine is running and it doesn't matter if it is in park, or if you are driving it. I was on my way to work when it malfunctioned. I was sitting at a signal light when the engine accelerator went up to 4200 rpm by itself with no foot on the pedal. I almost got into an accident, I pressed harder on the brake pedal and had to take it out of drive to avoid hitting the car in front of me. The engines rpms change a lot now and will not idle right at all; this car is not safe to drive with these engine problems; and should not be on the highway. I had a pennsylvania certified inspection mechanic look at and drive the car; and he said the car is not safe to drive; and if it would have been due for state inspection that it would have not passed; but failed and would be illegal to drive. This engine problem happened on Sun., Mar. 28, 2004.
