Slowing down for light and car tries to stall. After getting it home and in the garage, noticed strong gas smell. Took to shop and guy said gas leak from top of tank. Read about lots of complaints about this issue with other people with E320's.

Faulty cam and crankshaft position sensor caused engine to die (stall) in heavy nyc traffic in the center lane of us hwy 9. Dealer indicated that the cam position sensor 003-153-28-28 and sender unit 004-153-69-28 must be replaced, indicating the cause as an internal fault. Dealer's service rep stated that this was a common problem. The failure mode is the same as occurred on my e 320 model year 2000.
When I found out that my dear wife was dying from advanced kidney failure, I went out and bought a beautiful 1996 e 320 (from its original owner). However, when he decided to advertise the car, he carefully pressure-washed the engine compartment, etc. , so it would look its best. After which, he could not get the engine to fire again, so he had it towed to the local dealer, who charged him almost $800 to "dry off the spark plug wires, & replace the spark plug boots"!!! (nothing was mentioned about "cracked wiring, etc. ) I took possession of the car right after this fiasco, and never gave it a second thought until the car began to sputter and die, right in the midst of traffic, etc. ! on at least 3 other occasions, the car has simply shut off, just like turning the ignition off! the orig. Owner says it has never done this for him! so I stumbled onto the huge list of consumer complaints on the deteriorating wiring harness issues, which have not been recalled by mb. I have always held mb in highest regards, but for them to know about this, yet not fix it, is unforgivable! my wife's aid must use this car to drive her to her routine doctor appointments, and I can only say that they'd better not get hurt in this vehicle because it stalls out with them! they will have a lawsuit on their hands for sure! I only expect that such blatant faulty wiring problems should be fixed. . . No questions asked! I believe any american manufacturer would do so, and I expect mb to be held accountable to fix this horrific well-documented problem! please use whatever power you can muster, to help convince them to rectify this defect! (I no longer believe the dealer mechanic who told me that he had never heard of this car doing such a thing, and it must be a drop of condensation in the gastank"! I was instructed to "run a can of injector cleaner thru, and it should fix the stalling problem". Ha! not!!!!.

Vehicle will stall out while driving on highway. Vehicle will not re-start. Contacted dealer.
I had purchased a mercedes-benz E320 4 matic wagon on August 25th 1998 from millennium automotive group at bridgewater, NJ. Since then this car has stalled while driving on several occasions and was brought back to the dealer to be checked and serviced. The dates of service are as follows: 1) June 16, 2000 odometer 12,435 miles, 2) Jan 3, 2001, odometer 17,549, 3) Jan 29, 2001 odometer 18,008 miles, 4) July 25, 2001 odometer 21,797. During these visits to the millennium automotive group, we were reassured that this vehicle is safe to operate even though they are clueless as to why this vehicle stalled so many times. Many parts were replaced, and we were led to believe that the car was thoroughly checked and is safe to drive. However, this car stalled again at pulaski skyway during a rain storm and I was almost hit by the car behind me on Sep. 14. 2001. This car is indeed not safe to drive. Currently I am driving a loaner car from the millennium automotive group and I am pursuing for a full purchasing refund from Mercedes Benz USA pertaining to NJ state lemon law (njsa 56:12-29 to 56:49). I feel obligated to report this matter to you.
