I own a 2003 Mercedes Benz E500. My wife was driving the car about 25 mph . She put on the brakes and a bright red signal appeared on the screen and the car brakes failed . To avoid an accident ,my wife drove into an uphill parking lot where the car came to a stop without the cars brakes help . After we calmed down ,we called aaa and had the car towed to rizzoli's mecedez repair 702 west grand Ave grover beach CA 93433 phone number 805-481-0832 which was closed and the car was left in their parking lot with the keys left in the drop box . This was the closest mercedes repair place we could think of in our state of shock. We were notified that sbc brake system had failed and it would cost $3453. 06 to repair . I found out that there had been a 25 year extended warranty on the VIN number in question . After the repair I still noticed some cushioning of the brake pedal but the car brakes did work . Rizzolis is not an authorized repair shop . I called the authorized dealer where I purchased the car alphonos ,1423 calle joaquin, san luis obispo ,93405 ,805 4382701 prior to get the cars brakes repaired and the representative I talked to said they do not have a recall listed on the vehicle and could not help me . I am seeking reembersement of the cost of repair since the dealer I bought the car from would not honor repairing the vehicle on the 25 year warrantee . Thank you [xxx] information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).

The contact owns a 2005 mercedes-benz E500. While driving 75 mph, the advisory brake malfunction warning indicator illuminated. The contact was able to coast to the shoulder lane. When the vehicle was turned off and restarted, it operated normally. The vehicle was taken to an unknown dealer where the contact was advised that they were aware of the failure. The dealer stated that diagnostic testing could only be performed while the failure occurred. The contact was also informed that the vehicle was not included in NHTSA campaign number: 04v296000 (service brakes, hydraulic). The manufacturer stated that the warranty repair for the sensotronic brake control failure had expired. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 101,386.

Brake failure. Total brake failure while driving down the highway. No warning light except after failure! according to recall campaign #2005110001" brake power may be reduced". Brake power wasn't reduced, there was zero- had to coast to a stop on the side of the road. Could've been catastrophic. Per safety campaign records, my vehicle is marked as "completed" . I am the 2nd owner of the car and it's not been completed. Contact mb dealership who offered to fix this recalled item for me at a 10% discount. Contacted mb customer service and I cannot get a resolution.
When attempting to exit the highway, the sensotronic brake control system (sbc) failed and there were no noticeable brakes. The pedal went all the way to the floor with no resistance. Manufacturer claims that if you apply additional pressure during a failure, there will be some braking power available. In the situation though, when the pedal goes to the floor, human instinct is to immediately find an alternative way to stop the car. I was able to stop by downshifting the transmission and applying the emergency brake. Less experienced drivers may not be so lucky. Mercedes benz USA is aware of the potential for all sbc electric pumps to fail at any time causing this same situation for anyone. They are unwilling to cover the defective part because I am one year beyond the 'extended warranty. ' they claim that as with any car parts, the sbc system can be expected to fail at some point. Anything beyond 10 years and they do not take responsibility for. Normally I would agree with that sentiment, but not when it concerns the primary electric system of electric brakes to fail. There should at least be a sufficient and noticeable hydraulic back up if this part is engineered to fail. Mercedes has recently extended all fuel tank related issues and components to 15 year coverage, and this would at least be a step in the right direction for the sbc system. However, I believe Mercedes Benz USA and the NHTSA should mandate a recall of all vehicles equipped with sbc to be inspected yearly and replaced free of charge for the life of the vehicle. I believe it is just a matter of time before there are significant deaths or injuries due to this problem - as the affected vehicles are all about 10 years old at this point. It is a valid concern for both me as a driver of an affected vehicle, and a concern for fellow motorists and pedestrians on the road.
The contact owns a 2003 mercedes-benz E500. While driving, the brakes failed and the driver was unable to immediately stop the vehicle. The vehicle was towed to the dealer (mercedes-benz of north houston located in houston, texas) who indicated that the hydraulic sbc brake pump was faulty and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired. The contact indicated that the sbc brake pump was previously replaced in 2011. After retrieving the vehicle and while driving, several warning messages displayed, including the battery and alternator warning indicators before the vehicle stalled. The vehicle was towed back to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the alternator and battery were faulty. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified. The failure mileage was 152,801.
While I was driving down the road, the brakes completely failed. There was a sudden 100% pressure loss in the brake pedal. I was less than 20 ft from getting on the highway. Had this happened to me while I was on the highway, I would have met with a tragic accident. This car only has 92,392 miles. It is a 1-owner with all maintenance and services done only by mercedes dealer and authorized repair facilities. The vehicle is 100% upto date on all repairs and maintenance and there is absolutely no reason for such failure. Upon further investigation, it was found there are other Mercedes Benz users experiencing the same issue. Not only will I ever buy a Mercedes Benz again, but I will never ride in a Mercedes Benz product for the sake of my safety!!!.

While driving on interstate brake failure sing come with red light totake to dealer. Try to stop the car but, not braking. Luckily no incedent. It had happened several times and it has only 122,000 miles. It can take my life away. It obviously the company's defect. Spend enough money after maintanance. Dealers are day time robbers. Company should replace the part without cost to loyal customers. There are other luxury vehicles available with compatative price.
This vehicle is equipped with sensotronic brake control that has a service threshold. When this threshold is reached the brake system defaults to non power assisted hydraulic mode to the front wheels only. This occurs without any prior warning and results in increased stopping distance. At the very least, mercedes should issue a mandatory recall to interrogate these vehicles with star das to determine how close to the service threshold the sbc unit is and replace them for free. This is a major safety issue that needs to be addressed. We are too scared to drive the vehicle because we don't know when the brakes will go into failure mode. Mercedes extended the warranty period for 10yrs which has expired. Even under that warranty period mercedes only replaced sbc units that had failed. The main issue is when the sbc unit fails you have no brakes; and replacing the sbc does not solve this because the sbc will eventually fail again in the future.
Dealership: first class auto land, 4050 frankford Ave philadelphia, PA 19124 first problem: the srs airbag light was on when I first purchased the car the dealership promised to fix it and never did. Second problem: the power steering was faulty and the dealership fixed it, but I got a new error on my instrument panel. Third problem: after getting the power steering problem fixed a warning light appeared saying warning esp malfunction visit service center. Forth problem: I drove to work and got home park the car woke up the next day and my right front front air shock went on me. I called the dealership and the owner refused to repair it, so I went to a an authorized mercedes repair shop and they fixed it, out of pocket I paid $650. 00 fifth problem: fifth problem: sbs brake system failed, my whole entire braking is not working, it was working perfectly and all of a sudden I parked my car to go into work, when I got off from work and started my car a huge red light flashed on my instrument panel, and my breaks would not work, I purchased the car on Jan 18th 2016 the current date is June 16th 2016 I had the car less than 6 moths and drove it for 5,000 miles. I have hd video footage of my car getting towed away when the air shocks malfunctioned, I will have hd footage of the towing of my car now that my whole entire braking system is malfunctioning could someone help!, I'm willing to do an full report on the local news, this dealership must be stopped before someone losses their life, I was fortunate not to lose my life or risk the lives of others thus far.
Upon exiting a highway, a red brake failure warning and beeping noise appeared. All braking capability was absent, so I was able to safely roll to a stop. This happened twice (odometer during these incidences exceeding 120,000) and I now have a white message appearing when I start the vehicle which notes "brakes - visit workshop". The times that the brakes seized up on me I was always able to turn the car off and start up again with no message ever to appear for months at a time, which made me think it was some sort of computer error message. I had the brakes checked and the mechanic could not see anything wrong with them, so I was always sent on my way with no repair work done. I have reached my limit with this vehicle. I do not feel safe and it is unfortunate I had to experience such trauma twice. Thankfully I was able to not crash into anyone and had convenient parking lots to roll into. Please investigate this matter. It has happened to many people.
On January 29, 2016, I was going towards the exit of my development but before I got to a main road (I was traveling slowly about 20 mph and driving straight) I was using brakes and red message popped up on the dash board stating reduced brake power and to depress bake pedal which I did but the brakes failed and the car kept moving so I let the car move into the curb where there was snow. I turned car off and turned back on and the warning message was no longer displayed and car functioned properly. I called mb dealer and told them what happened and I did research before calling and learned the subcommittee pump is the problem and there is a ten year unlimited mileage warranty on the matter. Even though the car is a 2006, the dealership said the warranty expired at the end of 2015 because the car was actually manufactured in 2005 (I bought it used in 2008). Since it was almost 1 month out of warranty the dealership said it would be 3000-4000 to replace sac system. This car should be recalled most definitely as I was in a panic when the brakes failed. I was just fortunate that it did not occur in traffic. Please make mb correct this problem as it obviously extremely dangerous and people could be injured if not worse.

Tl-the contact owns a 2004 Mercedes Benz E500. The contact stated that while driving approximately 55 mph, the brake pedal was engaged and failed to respond as the brake system failure warning light illuminated. The contact was able to avoid an accident. The vehicle was taken to a dealer where it was diagnosed that the sbc unit needed to replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. On another occasion, the contact stated that while driving at a various speeds, a fuel odor emitted inside the vehicle. The vehicle was taken back to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the reserve tank needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired but the failure recurred. The the manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 130,000. Ss.

The dealer stated that the sbc was defective and needed to be replaced. The manufacturer was notified. The VIN was unavailable. The approximate failure mileage was 95,000.
I took my car in on July 14, 2014 after receiving a brake repair alert on my dashboard 1 day earlier. The dealer, jack ingram mercedes, ran a diagnostic & reported the brake pressure reservoir needed replacing. I got the estimate, picked the car up & took it to another shop for a second opinion. July 16, 2014 I returned to jack ingram mercedes & requested another diagnostic. The repairman told us the brake pressure reservoir needed replacing & he flushed the brake fluid. We agreed to these repairs which cost $1767. The day we were expecting to pick up the car, 2 weeks later, the repairman called stating the brake pump failed & it would now cost an additional $2000 because the car was driven from the lot on July 14, at which time the brake pump was still good, therefore they would not honor the 10 year unlimited mileage warranty on the sbc pump. The service manager changed the story several times in an effort to make this my fault, however the car is & has remained in their possession since the 2nd diagnostic was run on July 16 at which time we were told only the brake pressure reservoir had failed. She stated they replaced the reservoir only to find that they had to replace it with a 2nd new reservoir because the 1st was apparently faulty & that's when they discovered the pump was bad. I don't understand how this is my fault. The pump went bad while in their possession after they replaced the reservoir 2 times. She also refused to give us a printout of the diagnostic report, probably because the report would show the date they found the pump failed proving it was in their possession. I do, however, have a copy of the diagnostic from July 14 & July 16 on which neither shows a sbc pump unit failure. I am ashamed because there are at least 4 people that I know who have bought a mercedes because of my recommendation. I only hope they don't have the same problem.
The contact owns a 2005 mercedes-benz E500. The contact stated that a warning message to take the vehicle to a repair shop illuminated concerning the brakes. The vehicle had been previously serviced several times for various brake failures, but there had not been a permanent remedy. The dealer (mercedes-benz of valencia, 23355 valencia blvd, santa clarita, CA 91355, 661- 753-5555) and the manufacturer indicated that there was an extended warranty for the sensotronic brake control (sbc), but did not specify if they would provide a solution covered by the extended warranty. The dealer indicated that there was a malfunction with the sbc unit and the pump, which both needed to be replaced. The manufacturer indicated that there was no recall on the vehicle and they refused to cover the vehicle with an extended warranty. The approximate failure mileage was 40,000.
Today while driving to work, a red brake failure warning. . . Flashes across the screen and my car would not stop!!! I am driving down the highway at freeway speed and thankfully on a level section of road. The brake pedal just flopped. . Nothing. . I managed to get it to the side of the road, park and get out with the car still running!!! there is a recall on this ( see NHTSA #05v-133 ) however Mercedes Benz is limiting it to 10 years. This is a huge safety issue since the brakes can fail at any time and there should not be a cutoff date. Mb refuses to offer any assistance to owners with vehicles outside the ten year period even thought they are aware it is still a problem.
The brakes failed when pressure was applied to brake pedal, there was only 20% of brake power.
The contact owns a 2003 mercedes-benz E500. The contact stated that while traveling various speeds, the brakes failed to respond to deceleration attempts. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not contacted about the failure. The failure mileage was 114,138.
The contact owns a 2003 Mercedes Benz E500. The contact stated that the brakes failed to activate when the brake pedal was depressed. The vehicle stopped when the brake pedal was depressed with force and seized to the floor board. The vehicle was towed to a private mechanic who located the failure at the abs antilock system. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure and current mileage was 131,000.
After picking up the kids from the neighborhood school and driving home it happened, as I approached a stop sign and depressed the brake pedal it went all the way to the floor with no resistance and no stopping power, red lights came on the the dash telling me I had a brake failure and braking power is reduced!. What a scary moment! I was able to let the car roll to a stop safely. After turning the car off and then on again all braking power was restored and was once again functional. Took the car into a Mercedes Benz dealer the next day and was told the entire brake operating unit needs to be replaced at a cost of $2,200. 00. I find this very hard to accept that the brake system on a properly maintained vehicle can suddenly fail without warning and resets itself after a restart. The dealer offered no other explanation, but things happen.
The contact owns 2004 Mercedes Benz E500. The contact stated while driving 65 mph the warning light "brake failure and esp failure" were displayed and also indicated that the contact should drive onto the emergency lane. The contact was unable to stop the vehicle by applying the brakes; however, when he was able to stop it by downshifting and engaging the emergency brake. The contact stated this could have caused a major crash. The vehicle was towed to a local mechanic who was performing a diagnostic test when the complaint was filed. The contact did not call the manufacturer. The contact had also viewed numerous complaints via the internet regarding brake failure for his year, make and model vehicle. The contact stated the manufacturer was not issued a recall but was fully aware of the brake system failure. The failure mileage was 67,000. Updated 01/13/bf the consumer also stated there was a smell of gas. It was determined the gas tank was cracked. Also, the front ball joint broke. The consumer has since traded the vehicle. Updated 01/24/11.
Brake pump failure on 2003 mercedes E500, no accident, lower braking power, long distance for braking, warning message on dash. Has not happened again. Dealer informed that since vehicle has a salvage title, the recall campaign will not be performed without cost. Campaign 2005 070007.
