Mitsubishi Eclipse owners have reported 24 problems related to automatic transmission (under the power train category).
Transmission sticking between 40-60 miles per hour at 3000 rpms and has a problem shifting down causing the "service engine soon" light to come on. The problem happens on the same 2 roads in the same exact spot. I had the pulse generators in the transmission replaced and one week later it was doing it again. I am trying to determine if it is air intake related since it happens only at those 2 spots on the road. Transmission was diagnosed ok (on computer unhooked to the electrical components in the car) I am taking it back in today to have the code read again, however it resets itself if it does not stick for while when driving. Problem was intermittent starting around August of 2008 and the problem had become more persistent until last week 3/25/09 when I had the pulse generator replaced. It did the same thing 4/1/09 one week later in the same 2 spots on the road. I think the problem is electrical and air take related but the codes given at the time it is diagnosed is not specific enough. I would like to speak with a Mitsubishi rep that can help diagnose the issue with out having to keep paying for it since I am pretty sure that this is not a one time issue. I want my car fixed before more damage is done.

The contact owns a 2001 Mitsubishi Eclipse. While driving at an unknown speed, the contact was unable to shift the vehicle. The vehicle went into the neutral position. She had the vehicle towed to her residence. The dealer stated that the automatic transmission needed to be replaced. The replacement was made approximately 30 days before the last failure, the contact was informed that the valve was sticking in the transmission. The dealer performed a flush, which corrected the failure for approximately 800 miles. The purchase date was unknown. The current mileage was 71,555 and failure mileage was 71,498. Updated 3/18/08

I purchased a 1999 Mitsubishi Eclipse spyder convertible 6-15-06. After driving the car 3 months the "service engine soon" light came on. I was out of town so took to nearest car repair station. They reset light & rcvd code p1750. When I rtnd home I took it in for service & to reset the check engine soon light. After 3 attempts I was referred to an authorized transmission shop where they rebuilt the tranny. I drove 200 miles and the tranny burned up. I was stranded at night on hwy 5. . . The car was towed to nearest authorized transmission station in bakersfield, CA. Long story short the tranny has been rebuilt 8 times since date of purchase, I have spent over $20,000 in rental cars, cabs, hotels. Etc. I once again was given Dec 2007. The tranny began to slip within 3 months. I tried to contact the original tranny shop and the place was gone, no notice was given & now I need to put car in shop. The car originated out of state & had 3 owners, each owner being from another state. Mitsubishi bought the car at an auction & it accrued over 12,000 miles while car was in their possession. I have been so stressed that I have come out of remission with 2 terminal illnesses. I don't know what to do.
I purchased a used 1999 Mitsubishi Eclipse spyder in Aug 2006. The first time I drove it the service engine soon light came on. I took to a shop, they found nothing wrong & reset the button. When I returned home the ses light was on again & I took to transmission shop to see why?they found nothing. . . . I then drove it & the transmission completely burned up & stranded me @ night, alone, on a weekend in the middle of nowhere. . On Monday I called the orig trans. Shop & they came & towed it back. . Rebuilt it which cost me close to $1,800. . I drove again back from the la area & ses light came on & tranny was almost burnt completely again. Since it was under warranty a place in bakersfield came & towed it the next day. I was stranded again @ night & had to pay for a cab to take me back to where I had been, over 250 miles which I paid for!. . . . . 2 weeks later my car was ready. . . . I had to rent a car to get to bakersfield to pick it up. . . . . A month later went back to la & ses light came on & smoke poured from under the hood. . . I checked tranny fluid & it was full however couldn't drive until it was looked at. . Again stranded, no vacant hotels except one ($300+ a night). . . Holiday weekend so I waited until tues for an affiliated shop(pasa robles) to look at it. . . . . They said it was fine to drive. . . . I drove 60 miles & it happened again. . . . . Stranded in lost hills I called the orig tranny shop(santa cruz) & later they drove 2 lost hills & towed it back. I had to pay for a cab to bakersfield airport ($200), & rent another car to get to la. . . . I rented yet another car to be able to return home. . . . . . . . . I have been without my car for a total of at least 90 days or more within a 7 month period. . . . . . . . Now once again I am taking my car back to tranny shop as ses lite is on & it will not go in reverse, and slips when driving. . . . . . It has only been 5 months since a new mfg. Tranny was put in!!!! susie wilhite.
1st incident: April 2002: 1999 Mitsubishi Eclipse GS locks up (transmission) constantly jumps and the speedometer will shut off. This problem was checked by official mechanics of Mitsubishi and suposedly corrected by them as well. Today: March 12, 2005: on my home, the car locks up, jumps, but completely shuts off, luckily I was only a block away from my home when this happened. After several attempts I did start the car again but the spedometer is not responding and when shifting from neutral to drive or reverse the car jumps. Same problem all over again. Mitsubishi said the problem was corrected back in April of 2002, parts were replaced. This could have caused a car accident or injury if I were on a major highway.
I have a 2000 Mitsubishi Eclipse that has 34000 miles on it, and about a month after I bought it the 2nd gear in the transmisswion kept grinding when shifting and I found out that a lot of other owners are having the same problem so I was wondering if there is a possibility of a recall for the parts involved.

I recently sent a letter to the Mitsubishi motors corporation regarding my 1998 Mitsubishi Eclipse spyder (please re-read attached). I was contacted by the corporate office regarding my erratic shift problem in my automatic transmission and was eventually told that I wouldnt be provided any sort of assistance on my vehicle. I find it appalling that the same problem occurred several times to my car when I was well within the warranty period for my car (before 50,000 miles). I took my car into the Mitsubishi service center, and got the response: technician cannot duplicate problem at this time. If problems persist, please being the vehicle back. I took the car to different Mitsubishi service centers several times after that, and got the same response ( I have documentation on this). Now, because your service technicians couldnt identify my cars problem when I was in the warranty period, I am being held liable. After several weeks of research, I have found numerous web sites documenting problems with Mitsubishi Eclipse vehicles, ranging from the years 1990-present. I have found a great deal of Mitsubishi Eclipses with the exact same problem. This problem is not regular wear and tear or driver related issues, it is an issue with the engineering of the transmission in the vehicle (several mechanics will swear to this statement, since they have worked on several cars with this problem). Below are some quotes from the websites proving that this problem is consistent with Mitsubishi Eclipse vehicles:
transmission problem at 50,000. Car would pop out of 4th gear when accelerating to get on highway. . Read more...

At 65 mph consumer noticed smoke coming from underneath vehicle, front wheels locked up, and vehicle went in circles. Dealer determined that transmission needed to be replaced. Transmission is on backorder at this time.

Vehicle has been tested a number of times; dealership was unable to duplicate the problem. Vehicle stalls when shifting from park to reverse; in may, vehicle began to kill without warning while driving between 40 and 65 mph. I was nearly rear-ended on one occasion when the car stalled on the interstate highway. I finally took the car to a different Mitsubishi dealership in libertyville, illinois. In mid-July, they stated that a flash/recall was being developed and would be ready in mid-August; they informed me that I needed to pick up my car. Due to the safety issues regarding this car, I refused to accept the car. They said that I would be charged for storage of the car and for all rental car costs. I filed a complaint with Mitsubishi motors headquarters, and they promptly sent a factory representative to assess the situation. Ultimately, a fuel pump was replaced; however, I was told to return the car in mid-August when the recall software is finally developed.

After applying the brakes to slow down for a stop, transmission would shift & then jerk forward. Took vehicle to dealer & informed consumer the brake rotors were warped & needed to be turned.
1 and 1/2 years after I bought my "brand new" car, the check engine light went on. I was told that my water pump and gasket needed to be replaced. One week later I experienced a problem with the power steering, I was told the power steering pully, bracket and belt had gone and would need to be replaced. Since then I have had the brake pads and the roters resurfaced more times then I care to remember. On July 26, 1999, I had noticed a problem with my transmission. I immediately brought it to the dealership, they told me that the trans was "operating to manufacture's specs". On November 3, 1999 the dearlership advises me I need a new trans.
Transmission locked up.
Consumer's son was in a car accident. He was making a left turn into the intersection, and a car was sitting in traffic and his front wheel drive did not work. Also, anti lock brakes locked up and he couldn't stop.
