Nissan Maxima owners have reported 21 problems related to radiator (under the engine and engine cooling category). The most recently reported issues are listed below. Also please check out the statistics and reliability analysis of Nissan Maxima based on all problems reported for the Maxima.
I have had my 2017 Maxima into the dealership ( tim dahle in salt lake city ut) on 10-22 2019 for an anti-freeze problem. The anti-freeze is being used but not leaking anywhere. They replaced the radiator cap and did not see any noticeable leaks , topped off the cooling system and said could not find the problem, said it was normal for the holding tank on the side to be low. I disagreed and thought it was an internal problem with the engine, they said could see no problem. A month later I have no anti-freeze in my reserve tank after driving only about 50 miles around town. When I first bought the car new I noticed it was low on anti-freeze, a year ago I took it in for an oil change they topped off anti-freeze and it has been leaking from the day I bought it, they say that is normal and I disagree. My warranty is up in June of 2020.

The lower radiator support beam rusted out causing the engine support to brake free from the beam. Now the entire lower support beam needs to be replaced at an extremely high cost of labor and parts. This is a common problem according to all the car websites and the youtube videos showing how to change out the beam. I do not see any recalls for this. For as many people who seem to have had this problem it should have been recalled. People were having this problem 5 yrs ago according to the videos and reports. According to the body shop this is a major problem and they have seen a lot of this type of corrosion issues with this Nissan model and year. According to what I have been told a very serious accident can occur while driving this vehicle if the beam breaks while in motion at high speed. There are still a large number of this year and make on the street and no warnings have been given to the public.

I was inspecting under the hood and the radiator split at the top, spraying coolant everywhere. The cap was functioning. No injury but very dangerous. The radiator looks like it is made of some type of plastic. I have a photograph of the radiator. I contacted Nissan and they told me to take it to a dealer. I didn't ask for compensation. I asked that the Nissan engineering dept review the defect for safety reasons and received no reply. I replaced the radiator myself. This is a safety issue. I have the radiator in my garage. Thanks clarence fasgold newcastle, ok 73065.

Ruptured fabric connection from radiator cap to radiator hosing caused entire contents of radiator fluid to rapidly evacuate under pressure while car was traveling at high speed. Engine heated up to unsafe maximum gauge temperature before car could be safely be brought to full stop.

Went to fix the passenger air bag recall and dealer informed that front cross frame/bar's metal is falling apart because of severe corrosion/rusting which is main support for the radiator and the engine. Also advised that it's highly dangerous to drive since engine/radiator can just fall anytime when it lacks the support. When Nissan consumer affairs is approached they failed to admit the defective material used but responded that vehicle is out of warranty and they could not cover. Also observed similar recent complaints from other owners, hope our complaints gets further attention and concerns are addressed.
The contact owns a 2001 Nissan Maxima. The contact stated that while inspecting the vehicle, he noticed that the lower radiator tie bar was rusted. The vehicle was not repaired and the manufacturer was not notified. The approximate failure mileage was 121,000.

Tl - the contact owns a 2004 Nissan Maxima. The contact stated that while driving at various speeds, the vehicle would shake violently whenever the transmission was shifted from park to drive. The vehicle was taken to the dealer who diagnosed that the valve body needed to be replaced. Also, the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic for a second opinion who stated that the transmission motor mounts and the radiator needed to be replaced. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 102,000 and the current mileage was 113,065. Kmj.
The radiator core support is rusting and has lead to a large hole on the bottom. The engine brace is mounted where the rust is forming. If the rust forms bad enough around the bolts the engine could fall down. Also the hood latch is connected the bottom of the core support. If this fails the rust can cause the hood to open while driving.

My vehicle, as with many Nissan Maxima's from 2000 to 2003, is affected by a defective radiator core support. The part is extremely prone to rusting and decaying while the surrounding parts remain intact. The part on my car has developed holes and chunks are constantly falling off, possibly causing a safety hazard.

The lower radiator support for the 1995-1999 Nissan Maxima. The lower radiator support supports the radiator, condenser, and the engine support beam. The lower radiator support starts to rust from the inside of the beam and eventually rusts all the way out causing the radiator and the condenser to hang lower and the engine to hang with limited support. Without the lower radiator support, the engine support beam hits off the ground during normal driving.

- the contact has a 2000 Nissan Maxima gxe that had to have the oxygen sensors replaced twice. The radiator was changed in the summer of 2006. The check engine light turned on due to an engine failure, the contact understood that this was a common problem with these types of cars.

We own a 2000 Nissan Maxima se. We have had multiple issues with it. At around 68,000 miles we had to pay around $1000 to replace all of the ignition coil wires on the car because it would stall and quit running. We took it to wallace Nissan in kingsport tennessee and had it repaired. They told us then that it was a " known issue" with no official recall from Nissan so we would have to cover the full cost out of pocket. Next we have always had these "noises" in the front wheels that they keep telling us is from rusted brake dust shields. Now the car vibrates all over the road, going to a mechanic tomorrow, most likely rack & pinion issue. While under the hood today trying to figure out the steering issue, hubby noticed that the brace that holds the motor & radiator is severely rusted. . . . We've replaced multiple O2 sensors, mass air flow sensors, constant issues with brakes since we've owned this thing. . . Etc etc Nissan has major issues with this car from what I am reading. . . . . What a shame they refuse to fix their mistakes.
The lower radiator support bar and surrounding lower structure started rusting away after about 4-5 years from new. The lower radiator support is now almost entirely gone. The dealer quoted $5400 to repair. I was told by the service rep that if/when the core support let go, the engine could fall causing a wreck.
While driving at highway speed steering wheel shook. Dealership inspected vehicle twice. First time they tightened the suspension system. The second time dealership replaced the front rotors, but the problem recurred. Also, radiator failed.
Water pump leaks radiator coolant. This has led to engine-overheating and may cause severe engine failure (a safety issue). On checking with dealer, the estimated repair and replacement of water pump may cost around $750. This is an unusually high cost for water pump replacement. With the car being a 96 model having only a mileage of about 50 k, this kind of water pump failure is probably unseen on most other car models. Therefore, it is suggested to the manufacturer to investigate into possible design defects of the water pump.
