Power steering does not work at low speeds (parallel parking, low speed turns, 3 point turns) in both forward and reverse. Power steering "whines" while acccelerating from a complete stop. Vehicle had approximately 65,500 miles on it when it started. Was told by the Nissan technician that did a diagnostic that it is either the power steering pump or the bracket.

3 Power Steering Pump problem of the 2006 Nissan Murano

Failure Date: 06/12/2012

My power steering pump has malfunctioned and the hose has a hole in it. The leak has cause a belt to pop while I was driving. I did not know what happened until the truck battery killed over and a mechanic helped me while the vehicle disabled. I also know of three other Nissan Murano owners who have had the same problem. Two of them have paid a large amout to fix this problem and the other traded in the vehicle because of the problem. This is a defect with Murano and I googled this issue and noticed that this is a common problem with this vehicle.

4 Power Steering Pump problem of the 2006 Nissan Murano

Failure Date: 10/29/2010

2006 Nissan Murano with approximately 76,000 miles on it. Power steering leakage identified by stain on driveway, as well as noise coming from under the hood. Dealer determined that cause of the leak is a failure of the high pressure line for the power steering pump. Dealer charged $750 to install a new hose. This has to be the most expensive hose on any car. Concern is that total failure can cause a surprise loss of steering resulting in a crash. This should be a recall issue.

5 Power Steering Pump problem of the 2006 Nissan Murano

Failure Date: 02/12/2010

High pressure hydraulic line associated with power steering pump is leaking. Shortly after buying the vehicle used from a dealer a noise under the hood began. I could not diagnose in the driveway and took it to the dealer who told me that the high pressure line to the power steering pump was leaking at a fitting. He quoted the repair price to be several hundred dollars. I filled the power steering reservoir and the noise went away. I have found numerous other complaints of this type online through Nissan forums and through auto fault awareness websites. Part number 49720-cb60a.

8 Power Steering Pump problem of the 2003 Nissan Murano

Failure Date: 07/16/2004

2003 Murano. The power steering fades in and out while turning at slow speeds . Turn the steering one way to one direction and try to quickly turn it back to the opposite way while slightly accelerating. All of a sudden, steering becomes very difficult and requires muscle power causing a few near collisions when changing lane or maneuvering out of sudden avoidance.

9 Power Steering Pump problem of the 2003 Nissan Murano

Failure Date: 12/28/2003

Crash was fatal head-on collision involving power steering problem in 2003 and 2004 Muranos. Murano driver was rounding sweeping right-hand curve on familiar road and ended up in oncoming lane. Driver apparently tried to steer back into proper lane, but was unable to do so, apparently because steering unexpectedly became very stiff and hard to turn when trying to turn quickly to avoid crash. Crash killed Murano driver instantly, and injured driver and occupants of oncoming pick-up truck. Extensive research in public sources has found that circumstances of this accident mirror problems with sudden loss of power steering-assist experienced by numerous Murano drivers in accidents and near-accidents at normal driving speeds, as in other complaints on NHTSA website and Nissan owner websites, and as found by consumers reports accident avoidance maneuver testing. This is a design issue, with steering pump based on lighter altima unable to keep up with quick steering inputs. Interplay of continuously variable transmission and drive-by-wire throttle may also contribute to problem by creating possibility of rapid drop in rpm when driver quickly takes foot off accelerator, as in emergency. It is not clear whether other problems with car's steering performance also led to initial crossing into oncoming lane. Nissan changed steering pump in 2005 and later models to deal with problem. Drivers of 2003 and 2004 models are still at risk for loss of power steering when they most need it. When loss occurs in parallel parking it is an inconvenience; when it happens unexpectedly while driving, especially when trying to avoid an accident, it is life-threatening, as in this case. Because it is a design feature, all 2003 and 2004 Muranos are subject to this problem. Murano owners (and dealers) should be notified immediately of this dangerous design defect. There should be safety recall for replacement of inadequate steering pump system before there are more fatalities and injuries.
