The power rack and pinion assembly failed and fell on the ground which nearly caused the vehicle to crash into the retainer wall directly in front of him when he made the left turn. 2002 olds Intrigue GX. Bought it 3 weeks ago. Not sure if this happened all at once or gradually over a period of about 3 hours-- my spouse was driving the car. Power steering stopped working when turning to the left; still works for right turns. It is very difficult to turn at city driving speeds (10 - 35 mph), and nearly impossible to turn when parking. Power steering fluid level is okay. No repairs yet by the dealer. We should not have to pay for repairs!!!
this poses enough of a danger, even if you know of it in advance and are strong enough to turn the wheel manually. I believe gm did a recall for a similar problem on their 1998 Intrigue, in 2004. Are they just waiting until enough people are injured in the 2002 models to decide to do the right thing?
we shouldn't have to pay $1300 for the dealer to fix a faulty/cheap/irresponsible design on gm's part, one that persisted for four years after the initial design.

On 2/10/06 the dealer replaced the transmission pressure control solenoid and replaced mass air flow sensor.

Rack & pinion failure under normal driving conditions. On 9/23/05 I had to have firestone tire & service center replace the rack and pinion with a remanufactured one. Old part is no longer available. A couple of months later, I became aware that Oldsmobile had a recall for that same problem on over 750,000 of their 1998 Oldsmobile Intrigue's. I contacted Oldsmobile toll free number regarding the recall. They checked my VIN number and stated that my VIN number was not under the recall. However, they could not tell me why only certain Intrigue's were recalled and other's were not. However, I feel that if they are aware of this problem on their 1998 Oldsmobile intrique's and issued a recall, it should cover all of the units affected. This cost over $700 to repair. Can not make a left hand turn smoothly. Turning right is fine but go to make a left hand turn you have to wrestle the steering wheel. There was a recall for theis with the 98 olds Intrigue but no recall for the 2000 model I have the 2000 model and I believe thjere shouold be some kind of recall for this defect the 98 and 2000 models are almost exactly the same. Nothing was doen to rpair this dealers just want yoiu to purchase a new vehilcle. Needs fixed soon could cause very serious accidents while driving possibly even death . . . .

Failure of power assisted steering of rack and pinion steering identical to description found in campaign number 03v527000 of December 11, 2003. When turning left steering becomes as difficult as if there is no power assist, especially at lower speeds. There was a recall and when I contacted Oldsmobile I was told that my vehicle's VIN number was not included and that my vehicle would have had the "correction" made at manufacturer. So, I ask, why does it still do exactly what is described in the recall? I feel that my vehicle should be recalled, inspected and repaired at Oldsmobile's expense. Please advise.
While making an uphill left turn at approximately 10 to 15 mph, the steering wheel failed to turn and went over a sidewalk. The driver was able to maintain control of the vehicle and pull over and turn off the vehicle. The driver took the vehicle to an authorized gm dealer (no local Oldsmobile dealer in area). The mechanic informed the driver that the steering gear was defective and was replaced. Please provide additional information. While making a left turn, driver could not apply enough pressure to turn steering wheel. Driver could not maintain control of vehicle. Female driver had adult male take vehicle to dealer where power steering rack was found to be defective and replaced and front end aligned.
