13 Car Will Not Start problem of the 2004 Saturn ION

Failure Date: 11/01/2013

Car will not start because the ignition will not read the key. It takes 15 minutes just waiting, with the key out, then when trying again it does read the key and the car starts. This is not the first time as it has been going on for the last eight (8) years for me with hundreds of others with the same problem! I have taken the car to dealerships and garage workers. Each place says the car is fine, nothing wrong. It seems that gm knew something was wrong since 2003 and gm later told dealerships so dealerships knew and no one did anything. Well, gm has finally made the statement that something is wrong with the ignition system and keys - finally. One big question is why did it take so long from NHTSA too! NHTSA is to make sure people are safe but you have been very "late" too. I blame both gm and NHTSA that it has taken too long. Gm can be fined because of being late correcting the errors. Can NHTSA be fined for the same reason - late making a company correcting errors! it seems that no one would lesson to the drivers and/or owners with the same problems - not gm and not NHTSA. You are asking gm why it has taken so long. Can you let us know why NHTSA was late too?.

Failure Date: 09/30/2012

The key would get stuck in the ignition not allowing me to get out of the vehicle unless I manually unlocked the doors. This was happening for about a year or more intermittently. Then one day I could not get the car to turn off because the key would not turn. After about a 5-10 second time frame, the ignition would unlock allowing me to turn the car off and remove the key. This occurred intermittently for a couple of days then when I was on vacation, the key would not come out at all while the car was still running. I was left with having to temporarily unplug the battery and the fuse so the car would turn off. The mechanic I took the car to while on vacation showed me how to do this and was able to get the key out of the ignition. I had the car towed to a mechanic once I arrived home because the car would not start at all at this point, the mechanic informed me the ignition lock was bad, and apparently gm had been aware of the problem and offered no recall but did re-design the internal components of the ignition lock.

21 Car Will Not Start problem of the 2005 Saturn ION

Failure Date: 06/01/2012

Started with the ignition switch, in the winter time the car wouldn't start when it was too cold. The security system icon would come on an I would have to wait for about 10 to 15 minutes so the car could start again. This went on for few years during winter time. No recalls back then. Then the power steering light started coming on, the steering wheel would lock making it very hard to turn or manuver. Happened on highway or regular streets. Brought the car in to dealer on July 2013 and they replaced the power steering motor per their "special policy". The car got worst instead of better since then. The power steering light would come on an now the whole electrical system keep going crazy. The monitor would blink and show power steering words, the side lights would come on an blinked by itself. The dealer said we would have to replace the steering colum which would cost me around $1000 to replace. I couldn't afford that and there were no recalls back then. Also the car would start to shake when I would press on the gas pedal an go from 10 to 20 to 30 miles. The monitor gauges would move by itself while driving. There was also a sound coming from the gear box as if the car was changing gears by itself. Brought to a private mechanic which didn't charge me to diagnose and he said beside power steering the cars computer may need to be replaced. That would cost me another $1000. I decided to stop driving the car altogether afraid I would get into an accident and could afford to pay for more repairs. A year later brought in the car to dealer to have the ignition switch be replaced with the recall and told them about the power steering problems had continued. They said there was no recall on my car for that. They said if I wanted they would charge me $119 or so to diagnose the car and any repairs I would have to pay out of pocket. Still safety issues they choose to ignore!!.

32 Car Will Not Start problem of the 2004 Saturn ION

Failure Date: 01/21/2011

My car will not start when the weather turns cold. I am the original owner of this car and keep up on the maintenance. After researching the problem, I have read numerous complaints on line about the same problem from other Saturn Ion owners and have concluded that the passlock system is misinterpreting a theft and locking up the fuel . I read that changing the grease in the ignition switch will correct this problem and that Saturn (gm) has known of this complaint for some time now. They have a new improved part to replace this bad one but I don't feel it is worth $400. 00+ to pay for replacement when it is a quick fix and it is their fault to start with. Please issue a recall for this problem. I have been stranded in the cold waiting and praying for the car to start so that I can get to work on time and back home. It is not too much to ask. The car only has about 42,000 miles on it.

33 Car Will Not Start problem of the 2006 Saturn ION

Failure Date: 01/03/2011

I am writing to inform you of the troubles that I am having with my 2006 Saturn Ion. My Saturn doesn't always start on the first try (radio and lights come on, but the engine does not turn over). On most mornings, whenever I try to start the car, it doesn't start and an icon showing a car with lock shows up on the dashboard. However, after waiting approximately 20 to 30 minutes, the car will start sometimes. On one occasion, I even called aaa thinking it was my battery and was informed that there is something wrong with the pass-lock system (the car thinks I am trying to steal it). On Tuesday, December 28th, I took the car to north shore Chevrolet of smithtown in st. James, NY and was informed that I needed to have a new ignition installed and that should solve the problem. I picked the car up on the afternoon of Wednesday, December 29th and drove home. However, on Thursday, December 30th, when I tried to start the car, the car wouldn't start. I tried starting the car at least 5 to 7 different times from 8 10:30am but the engine wouldn't crank. Finally, at around 10:45 am the car started, I waited approximately 15 minutes and drove it back to the north shore Chevrolet of smithtown in st. James. The north shore Chevrolet of smithtown informed me that each time they attempted to start the car, the car would start; therefore, they couldn't or wouldn't be able to diagnose the problem. I picked the car up from north shore Chevrolet of smithtown on Monday, January 3rd and had no problems getting to and from work on Tuesday, January 4th. However, on the morning of Wednesday, January 5th, the car wouldn't start, once again.

On mornings when it is cold and has been during the night as well, my 2004 Saturn Ion will not start. It has happened three times now.
