4 Car Accelerates On Its Own problem of the 2017 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 08/19/2019

Yesterday morning, I stopped my Subaru in order to back into a parking space. The car was in drive and my foot was on the brake. While my foot was still on the brake and I was changing gears from drive to reverse, the engine started accelerating full-throttle. I had to press the brake pedal very hard to prevent the car from going down the hillside behind the parking lot. I put the car back in park with the engine revving full-throttle and turned the ignition off. After this incident the car operated normally until today. Today, my car was parked in my driveway in front of my garage. When I started the car everything seemed fine until, with my foot on the brake, I attempted to change gears from park to drive. Again the engine immediately and unexpectedly accelerated full-throttle. As I was moving the gear shifter from park to reverse to neutral to drive, I again had to press the brake pedal very hard to prevent the car from backing into my garage door. I immediately called my Subaru dealer but could not reach the service department. After 10-12 rings I got a message instructing me to leave a message for them to call me back since they were currently experiencing heavy call volume due to an increase in recall issues. I called back and got through to someone in the service department and explained the problem to them. They said they were unfamiliar with this problem on Subaru Outbacks.

6 Car Accelerates On Its Own problem of the 2019 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 08/13/2019

Slowly pulling straight into parking spot at grocery store. Applied brake when car suddenly accelerated. I was able to control steering, but brakes would not work. Steered car into empty parking spot in front of me then turned hard right to avoid hitting parked cars in row across. Subaru hit a pick up truck that was reversing out of a diagonal parking spot. The car didn't stop upon impact, instead both right side wheels climbed up the side of truck at an angle. Air bags didn't deploy on impact. This was a very dangerous situation. The acceleration was uncontrollable and I am afraid to drive the car.

10 Car Accelerates On Its Own problem of the 2013 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 03/22/2018

Subaru Outback self-accelerated (unintended acceleration) on March 22, 2018 as I was attempted to park the car in a parking lot. Due to the self-acceleration the car hopped over the curb in the parking lot and ran over a bush. My foot was no where near the accelerator and even when applying the brake, I had to press extremely hard on the brake to stop the vehicle. While it self-accelerated the engine made a loud revving sound. On March 23, 2018 the car self-accelerated again with my husband driving on the open road. After this incident we had the car towed to our car dealership. Subaru has had the car since March 23 and denies any problem with the accelerator or car.

11 Car Accelerates On Its Own problem of the 2016 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 12/30/2017

Sudden acceleration: this serious unsafe condition relates to my 2016 Outback limited 2. 5l purchased on 2/29/2016 in tampa florida. The exact same unsafe condition has happened twice; first in October 2016 at approximately 8800 miles, and second in December 2017 at approximately 24,000 miles. Description of incident: while slowly pulling into a parking space and gently applying the brake, the car's engine rpm accelerated and I had to break hard in order to stop the car. I moved the transmission to park, but the engine continued at high rpm so I moved the transmission to reverse, then to neutral, then I turned off the car off since the engine was still at a high rpm. A notice appeared in my odometer area to put the car in park, which I did. I then restarted it and everything was back to normal again. Note: I did not simultaneously push the break and the accelerator together which could possibly cause this situation. I am fortunate nothing was in front of me either time. I hope no one has been injured, but it is likely property damage has resulted. Please determine the cause and correct this potentially deadly situation. I am taking my car for a 24,000 mile service on 1/3/2017 and will document this with the dealer (mastro Subaru) at that time. I suspect this is a computer glitch, and a potentially dangerous one at that. I also suspect other car manufacturers can have this same issue if these computers and programming all come from the same third party.

12 Car Accelerates On Its Own problem of the 2010 Subaru Outback

13 Car Accelerates On Its Own problem of the 2015 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 11/25/2017

This concerns a 2015 Subaru Outback limited 6 cylinder. At approx 21,000 mi I was slowing to speed to park in a public parking space on a city street and the Outback sudden acceleration. The Outback hit a city metal post/sign, jumped the curb and collided with a building and damaging a store front with great force. The airbags did not deploy and the automatic collision prevention failed to work. Once before the car had an acceleration surge while driving a public city street at low speed but did not hit anything. Prior to the accident I've also experienced slight hesitation in acceleration when I first accelerate from a stationary position and probably unrelated, the gear shift often gets stuck in park and I have to use force the gear shift to reverse. Having trouble with turning neck from side to side and need to see doctor for evaluation so, not sure if this is considered injury?.

14 Car Accelerates On Its Own problem of the 2010 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 08/18/2017

I was backing my Outback a short distance (about 20 ft. ) to a parking space across the street when it suddenly accelerated. I ran into a parked truck with great impact. The car felt like it had a mind of its own. It was terrifying.

15 Car Accelerates On Its Own problem of the 2017 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 08/07/2017

While braking at an intersection the car would suddenly accelerate into the intersection. This happens often. I need to concentrate on my foot position every time I hit the brakes to make sure that my foot does not accidentally hit the gas also. For your information, I am 6 feet tall and wear a size 11 1/2 shoe.

16 Car Accelerates On Its Own problem of the 2017 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 06/08/2017

On 8 June 2017 I had just pulled into a parking spot in front of a medical suite when my leased three month old 2017 Subaru Outback with 1,000 miles suddenly had an unintended acceleration episode jumping the curb and crashing into a brick wall and suite door after displacing a threshold column by two inches. The airbag did not deploy, the "eyesight" function did not stop the vehicle, the seat belt did not restrain me and my chest slammed into the steering wheel, my knees crashed into the dashboard. On 2 June, less than a week earlier, the car had done the same unintended acceleration while backing out of a parking spot, but nothing was hit at that time. After the initial ambulance er visit, plus two more, my physical injuries consisting of aches and pains, bruises, xrays, iv treatment for persistent headache after the accident, are insignificant compared to the mental and emotional damage. Not to mention the economic burden and frustrating situation this leaves me in. I contacted the dealership and sent in pictures of the vehicles and damaged building. They in turn referred my complaint to Subaru of America who was very diligent in performing an investigation and keeping me updated with the procedure. However, almost two months after the accident, Subaru of America claims their results indicate "misapplication of throttle and break" clearly putting the blame on me, without mentioning anything about the first incident, and the lack of response of the safety features of the vehicle during the accident. There are at least 34 reports of similar accidents due to unintended acceleration of Outback vehicles, and at least 70 related to the Subaru forester on carproblemzoo. Com since 2000. I now find myself with a beautiful brand new vehicle that I will pay the lease for, but don't feel comfortable driving out of fear that the unintended acceleration will reoccur.

19 Car Accelerates On Its Own problem of the 2015 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 02/08/2017

While pulling my father-in-laws Subaru Outback into my garage I place the vehicle into drive while applying the brake. The car immediately accelerated while my foot was on the brake. The car proceeded into garage first hitting the side of the garage door frame and then into the back of my other car which was parked inside the garage. I instinctively applied greater pressure on the brake but this did not stop the car. When the car wedged against the right side column of the garage I released the brake and reapplied immediately. This action caused the car to decelerate to an idle mode. I've been driving a long time and have never experienced an issue like this before. I noticed others have also experienced similar sudden acceleration problems as reported on this site. There was no floor mat obstruction so I can only conclude there is a possible software issue.

20 Car Accelerates On Its Own problem of the 2015 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 12/16/2016

While braking to turn into a parking lot from a highway, the car suddenly accelerated and the brakes would not hold the car. Accident was avoided. Symptom only lasted 2-3 seconds.

21 Car Accelerates On Its Own problem of the 2014 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 06/28/2016

Pulling car into parking space at slow speed when car, without driver input, suddenly accelerated. Heavy pressure on brakes, driver felt the abs cycling, did nt stop vehicle. Finally, after colliding with a parked car, nose to nose and pushing other car out of its parking spot, driver was able to stop the car my moving transmission gear selector to park.

22 Car Accelerates On Its Own problem of the 2004 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 06/26/2015

Unintended acceleration. Not driver error, not stuck floormat. Vehicle started accelerating above 7 on the tachometer. Pushed in clutch of course. Stopped with clutch in and vehicle just kept revving higher. Shut off car and restarted later. Terrifying.

23 Car Accelerates On Its Own problem of the 2015 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 06/04/2015

Unintended acceleration. When driving at low speeds--what would traditionally be 1st and 2nd gear (the car has a continually variable transmission)--and while keeping constant pressure on the gas pedal, the transmission changes the acceleration of the vehicle on its own in a process that feels like it can't find the right "gear", and it provides a "jerking" feeling (usually only a couple of "jerks"). Yet the transmission is not just finding the right gear for a specific constant speed; as it shifts around, the acceleration changes and has, with constant pressure on the pedal, accelerated faster on its own. I have never felt less control of a vehicle as I have with this one.

24 Car Accelerates On Its Own problem of the 2015 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 04/18/2015

I was slowing pulling into a parking space and just straightening out the car when I heard a strange sound coming from the engine. Immediately after that I heard a very loud engine revving sound and then suddenly the vehicle shot forward like a rocket, went over the cement barrier and into the wall of a building. It seemed like a very high rate of speed, though the distance was only about 8 feet. The seat belt did not restrain me and my chest slammed into the steering wheel. It was determined later at the hospital that I had a cracked sternum and several broken ribs. I believe there was some sort of mechanical, electrical or software problem that caused this unintended acceleration, and the seat belt also was did not functioning as intended.

25 Car Accelerates On Its Own problem of the 2014 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 03/08/2015

I was pulling up to park behind a Toyota prius on a road that was partially covered with snow & ice. The wheels on the right side of the vehicle were on snow & ice and the wheels on the driver's side of the car were on dry roadway. I was driving slowly to park when the car suddenly accelerated into the rear bumper of the Toyota prius. The engine was racing wildly and my attempt to brake were ineffective. There was damage to the rear trunk & bumper of the prius and damage to the front of the Subaru. I suspect that the Subaru traction/speed/stability/electronic throttle controls had malfunctioned.

26 Car Accelerates On Its Own problem of the 2001 Subaru Outback

28 Car Accelerates On Its Own problem of the 2010 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 04/13/2014

On approximately 04/13/2014 approximately at 6:00 pm et, my suburu Outback 2010 rapidly accelerated when my foot was centered on the brake petal and I moved the gear from neutral to drive. The vehicle lurched forward, engine highly revved. I pushed hard as possible on the brake and shoved the gear back into neutral. The engine was racing and I switched off the power. I powered back up and the temperature gauge, gas mileage calculator, etc. Was out. The ac/heat temperature and control screen was out. The fan control only would work and put out extreme heat. The outside mirror motors would not work. For the next 30 minutes on the way home I stopped several times and experienced the same electrical conditions upon restart. On April 14, 2014, all systems were normal when I started the engine. I took it to the dealer was told they would replace the switch (keys) but had no information on rapid acceleration out of control. I am concerned this will happen again and result in wreck and/or injury to myself and/or others. No mats were in the car at time of incident.

29 Car Accelerates On Its Own problem of the 2013 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 12/13/2013

The contact owns a 2013 Subaru Outback. The contact stated that while braking to a stop, the engine rpms increased excessively as the vehicle suddenly accelerated without warning. The vehicle was not taken to a dealer for diagnostic testing. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure and current mileage was 12,000. The VIN was not available.

30 Car Accelerates On Its Own problem of the 2000 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 10/01/2013

Sudden acceleration. Was driving at a slow speed due to light traffic at a red light. Car started to feel not normal and I knew something was wrong. I pressed on the brake but the car kept jumping forward, not wanting to stop. I was afraid I would hit the car in front of me. Luckily I was going very slow. Right after the car started accelerating for no reason. I kept my foot on the brake, my foot was never on the gas. I had taken my foot of the gas before the car started acting up, since I needed to slow down for the red light. The rpms were going very high. I was unsure what to do because I never experienced this kind of situation. I panicked and put the car in neutral, and then in park and turned the car off. I called for help and was lucky my step father was around the corner. He pushed the car to a safe spot. Then he turned on the car while still in park and it was still accelerating very high. It went down and went back to normal acceleration. He then drove the car to the mechanic which was about 200 feet away. I am now having a diagnostic done to see if they can figure out a solution to why the car had sudden acceleration. I know for a fact I did not press on the gas instead of the break, and I also know it was not the Subaru floor mat. This issue needs to be looked into as it could have been very dangerous.
