Subaru Outback owners have reported 13 problems related to navigational (global positioning system) gps (under the equipment category). The most recently reported issues are listed below. The head unit, which is the center built-in touchscreen of the 2018 Subaru Outback, began glitching after 5 to 6 years after this vehicle was purchased. It would not register actual touches, and then it would register touches that did not occur, it became so severe that while driving, the radio would change on its own, navigation/gps application would become unusable, and other distracting actions would occur without any way of fixing them. After some online research, matching photos of the screen showing bubbles underneath, and similar reports we have found including a class-action lawsuit against Subaru, the vehicle was taken in for official diagnosis of delamination. Subaru of America (soa) agreed to pay $1000 of the approx $1500 cost to replace the head unit, and recommended we reach out directly to NHTSA to report a safety concern to have a potential recall started. This issue is a dangerous distraction and safety concern, and it seems to be a common occurrence with these head units. There were numerous incidents before getting the screen repaired where it caused driving distractions with the erratic movements and changes on the screen, which could cause an accident. Please recall these so no one ends up in an accident or ends up having to pay for this faulty part. Thank you for your time.

Screen is delaminating. Becoming unresponsive at times. Making ghost touches, phone calls, opening apps, messing with gps. Seems unsafe when it could be going haywire and especially using gps trying to navigate traffic.

The contact owns a 2018 Subaru Outback. The contact stated that the head unit was demalated the gps unit was inoperable. The volume increased to high. The gps made phantom calls. There were no warning lights illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer, where it was diagnosed that the gps unit was demalated and needed to be replaced. Informed that the part was backordered. The manufacturer was contacted and offered assistance with the repairs. The failure mileage was approximately 63,000.
On July 28th, my touch screen (head unit) in my Subaru Outback suddenly delaminated overnight. From that point foward, all systems connected to the head unit have been either unusable or intermittent--often dangerously so. My backup camera and blind spot indicators are randomly unusable; the gps system turns itself on and off in use (and half the time, screen itself cycles through "ghost touches" and is unable to be directed in any way); my car calls random people through the bluetooth system while driving, which is a major distraction, and starlink is unusable. Internet searching has revealed a proposed class action lawsuit against Subaru for the known issues with their head units; the 2018 models were recalled, but as mine is a 2019, I have been told I'm ineligible for support with repairs and would need to pay 3k out of pocket. I can't sell the car with the level of defects it currently has, and driving the vehicle is at best irritating and at worst, dangerous (depending on how the head unit behaves that day). I purchased this car because I wanted to have a backup camera, blind spot indicators, access to gps support, and more.
Infotainment system suddenly shuts down while driving blank screen often triggered while using gps. Radio will turn on spontaneously at full blast creating a startle effect, often unable to turn off. Had to pull over and turn car off. Daily event has been escalating. Apparently dealerships aware Subaru has been non-responsive. Telling dealerships there is a software fix issue, finally communicating to me there is no current fix. Multiple communications have led to no response. Despite near miss of an accident due to these issues. Almost daily over last 2-3 months.

The contact owns a 2019 Subaru Outback. The contact stated that the vehicle's navigation system failed to operate as needed. The dashboard failed to illuminate properly. The contact stated that he attempted to shut down the vehicle; however, the push to start failed to operate. Additionally, when the contact attempted to lock the vehicle using the key fob it failed to lock, and the vehicle's alarm failed to set. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, where the vehicle was calibrated; however, the part to do the repair were on backorder. The failure recurred. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 60.

On the highway cruising at 10:19am in oct 13 2017, a number of electrical components on my Subaru Outback froze abruptly. Specifically, my on-board gps navigation screen froze, the digital clock froze (on 10:19am), and the heads up display of navigation directions on the driver's hub froze. Who knows what other systems also locked up, which I couldn't observe. After I stopped and restarted the car, those things unfroze.

We purchased a 2016 Subaru Outback 3. 6, fully-loaded with every bell and whistle regarding safety, comfort, and convenience in the middle of December 2015. The Subaru starlink infotainment system's technology froze causing the clock to freeze at 10:37am as well as the navigation system (no voice commands either. ) the multi-touch interface not only lost functionality across the board, but it affected the message display between the tach and speedometer, as well as the touch screen options disappearing from the screen, the map would not display, you would press the audio button and after about 30 seconds, the audio screen would automatically enter split-screen mode with the navigation system. When trying to exit split-screen, the system would not respond. If I shut the radio off by the button, the system would not shut down. The radio would say, "audio off - touch here to go to source screen", however the system wouldn't shut down. The system would stay on split screen with the map, only the map would disappear. I videotaped what was happening, called starlink, Subaru of America, and the dealer, who has been awesome so far, and was told they know of one other vehicle with this situation. Subaru of America said to shut the vehicle off and "reboot" the system to see if that would help because it did in another instance, although not totally correcting the problem and only addressing the gps freeze. There are a couple of tsbs (technical service bulletins) on the radio, however none applied to the symptoms being displayed by my vehicle. Waiting on Subaru of America to address this and a roof rail issue. Dealer believes there will be many more of these complaints about the Subaru starlink infotainment system's technology. Regarding the roof rails, they do not sit flush to the roof. Dealer replaced left side already and still happening, so Subaru has to address it now.

The contact owns a 2015 Subaru Outback. The contact stated that while driving at an unknown speed, the navigation voice commands failed to activate. As a result, the contact had to constantly look at the screen, which was a distraction. The vehicle was taken to a dealer. The contact was unsure about what needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired. The failure recurred and the vehicle was taken back to the dealer who diagnosed that all personal data needed to be cleared out as a temporary remedy. The technician stated that there was no remedy for the failure. The failure persisted. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 2,500.

In November 2014, I took delivery of a new 2015 Subaru Outback, 3. 6 limited. The vehicle was equipped with the optional premium electronics package, and the ¿eyesight collision avoidance system. After about three weeks of ownership, I started to experience random malfunctions with the key-less ignition, and the key-less entry systems. The ignition problems all involved engine start, and occurred in scenarios where the key-fob wasn¿t recognized. About the same time, the gps navigation system started to display erroneous locational data, and the associated ¿starlink touch screen system would freeze-up (become inoperable). As of today, I have posted six different videos to youtube to dramatically illustrate the problem. . Read more...
