Toyota RAV4 - Problems, Statistics, and Analysis

Toyota RAV4 owners have reported 4,153 problems for their cars built in the 19 model years listed in the chart below. The chart shows the number of problems reported during all service years for each model year of Toyota RAV4. The 2007 Toyota RAV4 cars have the most problems reported (752 problems).

  Common problems of Toyota RAV4

The following chart shows the 26 most common problems for Toyota RAV4 cars. The number one most common problem is related to the vehicle's power train (856 problems). The second most common problem is related to the vehicle's vehicle speed control (573 problems).

  Compare Reliability Across Model Years Using PPMY Index

It would not be fair to compare the older model year Toyota RAV4 to a new one in terms of the problems reported since older vehicles have been in service longer and more problems should be reported. In order to compare the reliability across RAV4 model years, we use the PPMY index which is defined as the problems reported per thousand vehicles per Year. A smaller PPMY index implies a better reliability for the model year under study.

    PPMY = P / S / Y * 1000

Where P = total problems reported during the life of a Toyota RAV4 model year; S = total units sold of the model year; Y = years since the debut of the model year (the age of the vehicle).

The result is shown in Table 3.

  Number of Problems Reported During the First Year

Another way to measure the reliability across the model years of Toyota RAV4 is to use the number of problems reported during the vehicles' first year in service, as shown in the Table 4.
