I have a 2001 vw New Beetle. I have replaced brake light, which was drains the battery, serpentine belt, remoteless key which is still broken- basically 6 days after buying this car- I spent $1200 on repairs- now the check engine light is on, the transmission is acting funny, and basically- my vw dealership has a field day with me. To top it off- my battery died a month ago- and caught on fire when I tried to jump it. I am afraid that this car will blow up on me at any time. Please help me!.
The contact owns a 2002 Volkswagen New Beetle. When the vehicle is turned on the air bag indicator light illuminated on the instrument control panel. The dealer stated that the air bag was deactivated and the seat belt latch system needed to be repaired in order for the air bag system to function properly. The contact would have to pay for the repair because air bag was not covered under warranty. The vehicle needs to be repaired. The failure mileage was 51,000 and current mileage was 52,000. Updated 02/14/08. The brake light bulb and right rear tail light was inoperative. Updated.

Headlight went out while starting the car. Dealer found a burned wiring harness to be the cause. Cost to repair $ 159. 31. This could have been a major problem if both head lights would have gone out while traveling on a dark hwy at high speed. Burned wiring harness is in my possession. Second problem was with a brake light that went out date 10/30/07. Cause as per dealer was a faulty light socket. Cost to repair $ 73. 61.

Rear tail lights and brake lights continue to malfunction. Each time dealer the fixes problem it promptly returns.
Having the same problem for the recall. Epc light came on and off, came on again. Currently, the brake lights were off. Tried turning off the vehicle, just turning the key have way , but they still will not come on. It came on once before about 4 or 5 months, but it went back off. Contacted dealer ,they had checked with the manufacturer. This vehicle was not included in the recall due to VIN.
2nd major electrical problem since car purchase. Safety issue regarding seat occupied light module and airbag light on/malfunctioned. Left brake light burnt out.

From sept 03 through April 04, I had 5 right rear brake lights replaced and 2 left headlights replaced on my 2003 vw New Beetle. No reason was ever given as to why they kept failing. The dealership just kept replacing them. My son was stopped by the state patrol once because a rear light was out - I had total strangers tell me that the lights were out and my neighbors and I are keeping track of how many vw New Beetles have at least one light out I count at least 4 each week. I want all vw New Beetle owners to know that this is a malfunction of their car and it is a safety issue and the dealer must repair it for free vw is not consistent with recording their recalls on the internet, so I did not know that this was a problem. I finally got sick and tired of this problem and took my car back to the dealer I purchased it from. The dealer finally acknowledged the problem by giving me a new car; however I am now having problems with the driver window going back down on its own. Refer to #odi 10074541 and #10074539. (I recorded the last incident as the incident date).
Brake lamps on 2001 New Beetle come on and stay on even though the vehicle is shut off and parked. This is similar to NHTSA campaign # 03v265000 (7-25-03). I checked vw and they told me the recall was VIN specific and my 2001 New Beetle was not included. It seems there may be more units affected than originally thought.
