Service Brakes Problems of Volkswagen Passat - part 1

Driving home from work around 1:00 am at night with street lights and no other cars in the vicinity the auto brake engaged, causing an abrupt stop. Once the auto brake ceased I was able to complete my trip. There was a light coating of water in a spot on the road but nothing else and no reason for this to occur.

The vehicle has been alerting error codes 16352 for failing to communicate with abs module causing warning lights for abs, brake and the esc systems to illuminate. The brake system related vehicle stabilizing functions (abs/esc) is not be available, increasing the risk of a loss of vehicle control and could lead to a crash causing injury and/or property damage. My car stalled on me while I was driving and would not start. I was told I need a new feul pump module. I took it to the dealership to get it replace and the feul pump but the car will not start.

Unknown my water pump failed and all out of nowhere.

Brake issues that consist of brakes not engaging immediately as I press the brake pedal. Brake pedal also doesn't return as fast as my foot lets off of it. It could be inspected upon request. If the brakes dont engage immediately then there is a potential for an accident if I need to brake at a moments notice. Yes the problem has been confirmed. No it hasn't been inspected. No there isn't a warning.

In may of 2023, I reported that the driver side rear brake caliper appeared to be sticking as one pad at that corner was completely worn down and making contact with the rotor, while the other pad at that same corner had no visible wear. Dealer replaced the rear left rotor under warranty (40,805 miles). Warranty also covered both rear rotors and rear pads due to rotor damage. In February of 2024, dealer inspection noticed the exact same issue on rear right brake caliper and replaced it under the extended warranty (59,631 miles). Although rear right rotor was damaged again, the extended warranty did not cover rear rotors or pads and I had to cover the cost out of pocket. In November of 2024 with approximately 80,000 miles, I performed a full brake inspection and noticed that even at this mileage, there was no visible wear to the factory installed front brake pads (which at this mileage was odd and concerning), and while inspecting the rear pads I noticed that there was no visible wear to the rear left pads, but the rear right pads were worn down almost to the rotor. This uneven wear was shown to the dealer and after a day of "diagnosis", the dealer tech found no issues. They claimed fluid was flowing freely and the brake pistons were not sticking (pointing to the abs module applying significantly more braking force to the rear right corner, in my opinion). I pressed the issue and after another day of diagnosis, they claimed the abs module was defective and submitted the claim to the extended warranty. Claim was approved and part is no order, but I do not trust the braking system on this car with brake pads wearing unevenly down to the rotors every 20,000 miles and no perceivable braking force taking place on the front brakes. I, again will have to cover the costs to replace the rear pads and rotors due to continued related and warrantied part failures. I also raised the issue to vw customer care, who created a case and is investigating with the dealer.

Brakes are on this care are failing well in advance of typical cars. My car's rear brakes are measuring at a 2 with just over 20,000 miles on the vehicle. When we asked the dealership about this, they said the Passat is just "hard on rear brakes. " we had a previous Passat and did not experience this issue. This is unsafe and unreasonable to expect these brakes wearing out at less than half of what is expected. Ironically, my husband's taos - of the same model year - is doing the same.

Rear brakes needed to be replaced at less than 20k miles the dealer comped it since we lease 2 different 2021 vw Passats and they both needed their rear wheels replaced at sub 20k miles.

The three issues above seems to be related or affect the other and does not allow cruise control to operate. The air bag light remains on and associated component light up the dash. Surprisingly, my VIN does not show up for air bag repair. I wish I did not have to wait for possible recall announcement for my vehicle before I can get it repaired and instead to fix it now. Frustrating.

The contact owns a 2017 Volkswagen Passat. The contact stated that while his wife was driving at an undisclosed speed, the brake fluid warning light illuminated. The contact then stated that he became aware that brake fluid had leaked from an unknown location and that the brake fluid reservoir needed to be refilled. The contact stated that after driving for a few blocks, he had to refill the reservoir again. The contact referenced NHTSA campaign number: 17v075000 (service brakes, hydraulic) as a possible cause for the failure. The dealer was notified of the failure and an appointment was scheduled. The following warning lights will randomly turn on & off while driving: air bag malfunction, abs brakes, esc, adaptive cruise control, front collision, tire pressure, power steering, blind spot detection, low key battery detected, and indicate they are not functional. It is a random and items will go back to work while normally driving. Key fob battery has been replaced multiple times. . .

Power brakes are not functional on startup when cold -- brake pedal is very stiff and takes a lot of pedal pressure to stop the car from moving while exiting driveway. Generally, braking improves within a minute or two of driving, but sudden stops in this condition are difficult and unsafe. The dealer service department diagnosed a leaking check valve in the vacuum system and the brake booster needs to be replaced - safety-related components such as brake boosters should not be failing at such an age.

The contact stated while driving approximately 30 mph, and also at various speeds, there was a delay when she would depress the brake pedal, also the steering pulled to the left and right as the contact slowed the vehicle. Additionally, the contact stated that the suspension was loose, particularly when she would roll over road bumps, the vehicle would bounce. The contact stated no warnings were illuminated. The contact had the vehicle towed to a local dealer, where it was diagnosed and determined that the front wheel bearings needed to be replaced. The vehicle had not been repaired. It just died and I lost brakes, power steering, and only know what else stopped working. Come to find out the splines wear off of the oil pump shift after the counter balance and chain goes out. This is so common a problem that when you google what happened there are numerous videos and complaints about this issue, with ways to stop it from happening. Korea has already recalled them and europe has recalled them, why are we so far behind on this. Not only is it expensive, but also a major safety issue because this stops the brakes from working and the car does not have stopping power with the motor dead. Not everyone knows to report to NHTSA!.

The contact stated that he was informed a year later at a vehicle state inspection, that the rear brakes were significantly worn. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, where it was diagnosed that there was an uneven brake wear as the rear brakes were prematurely worn while the front brakes were in very good condition. The dealer notified the manufacturer, who informed the dealer that there would be no assistance as the vehicle was not covered under warranty. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 5,000.

The brakes totally went out on my vehicle with no warning. It first started when I bought the car, the brake pad (almost brand new) almost set my left front rotor on fire within 10 minutes of driving. If I didn’t pull over there’s no question that my car would’ve set on fire. My fuel like was leaking heavily, and the emergency brake which is hydraulic wouldn’t even deploy. I could’ve gotten killed. There is also an extreme issue with the power train system. Completely unsafe.

The Volkswagen front assist (sometimes referred to as forward collision warning) system employed without having anything/anyone in front of the vehicle - no traffic in front, behind or on the side and the brakes engaged the brought the car to a complete stop in the street. This has been reported to Volkswagen and we have been told that their engineers are working on this issue but the vehicle is safe to drive. The day was a clear day. The contact owns a 2017 Volkswagen Passat. The contact stated that while driving at 45 mph, his brake pedal had locked upon slight depression of the brake pedal with the brake pedal warning symbol on the instrument panel. The contact stated that the failure occurred for a brief moment as the vehicle came to a sudden stop. The contact stated that the vehicle resumed normal operation after the failure. The dealer nor the manufacturer had yet to be notified of the failure. The vehicle had yet to be repaired or diagnosed. The failure mileage was approximately 41,000.

I was driving down the road and the wheel locked up and I lost control of the car. I thought it was just a flat tire. I noticed the tire was flat and brake caliber was lying on the inside of the rim. There was extensive damage to the vehicle, tire, rim, suspension components and brake components. There was no warning and it just happened suddenly. My family and other drivers safety were at risk. The dealership said it was due to impact but their estimate didn't mention or included any of the brake components. The brake caliber bracket is broken and the holes were the caliber bolts attached are elongated. The brake caliber and bracket are protected inside the rim and brakes just don't fall off. It is a vw certified car. I put 4,000 miles since I purchased and the accident happened on November 17, 2021. I have all the components and pictures.

Abs wheel speed sensors have failed on 3 different wheels in the 28. 200 miles the car has been operated since new. The left front at 19,241 mile. The left rear at 23,195 miles. Finally the right rear at 28, 200 miles. The cost at the dealer for replacement of an abs wheel speed sensor is around $350. I have had to pay for 2. The first was under warranty. When a speed sensor fails the abs warning light activates, the air bag warning light activates, the electronic stability control (esc) warning light activates and the steering is lacking in stability, the steering warning light activates, and finally the low tire pressure warning light activates. Upon replacement of the failed abs wheel speed sensors it was noted that the new sensors had an updated part number to a -b from a -a. I believe an unsafe condition exists with all of these systems inoperative after an abs wheel speed sensor failure and that vw should supply an updated, reliable sensor to all vw Passat owners.

After a brake job with the replacement of brake fluid, the brake pedal is soft even after re-bleeding. Two methods were used, pressurized and new fluid fed through the reservoir tank and then manually with two people replacing the fluid in the reservoir. Working on resolution. First brake replacement at about 40,000 miles.

The breaks is very weak I was going to hit the car at the front of me with 1 inch ! it took the car like 4 seconds to stop not sure was it just the breaks or the breaks and tires , the car kept moving after pressing the breaks hard enough , I was shaking since I just got the car 4 days ago !.

As I was turning into the apartment complex I felt my brakes begin to lock up. I pulled into my parking spot and the inside of the cab began to smoke. My car gave me no warning and I could not locate the issues of the smoke. I called my mechanic and got the vehicle towed over there. While the car was getting towed, oil began to fall from below the engine. Mechanic reported the vacuum pump went bad. That it also locked up and was leaking heavily. He also stated this was the worse he has ever seen as well as to report this incident. I will include photos with this report.

I am at the burger king drive thru Jan 23, 2021, there are a few cars ahead of me. I sit at driver thru with foot on the brake about 3 to 5 minutes, when the car in front of me moves closer to pick up his food, I let off of the brake and drift forward as I get closer to car in front of me , I press the brake and the pedal goes all the way to the floor. I press harder and my car bangs directly into the back of a 2015 camara that has been garaged kept and has only 3,000 miles on it. I give the driver my phone number. Very minor damage to his car and only damage my license plate area. I pulled my car into the parking lot , turned off ignition, I then started pumping my brakes and eventually the brakes felt much stiffer after about 15 pumps of the brake pedal . One week prior to this , I took my car to the vw dealership for oil change and specifically asked for them to check my brakes and tires. I was told when I picked up my car that tires should be replace in about 5,000 more miles,but my brakes were fine. My car just passed 40,000 miles on the odometer 2 days after the oil change. Yesterday Jan 25 ,2021 , I took the car to vw dealership explaining what had happened, today is Jan 26 they kept the car over night waiting to hear back from specialist from vw. Meanwhile I searched internet for info. That is when I reached this site. Also my forward collision should have come before I made contact with the car I hit at burger king. I seriously don't want anything to do with this vehicle anymore. I don't trust it. I also injured my leg pressing so hard on the brake pedal.

There is a gas leak by rear tire. The mechanics that changed my tires said it was water. Went for an oil change, and they refused to do it because it's a gas leak. They can't tell where it's coming from.

2009 vw cc pulling out into cross traffic the electric controlled parking brake locks up. I have had this happen several times now. I refuse to sell the car like it is or let anyone drive it. It appears to be related to the seatbelt. If it happens I undo my seatbelt and reinsert it to get it to work again. It seems like it's not programmed to be a fail safe system. I could not stop the car the break was extremely hard to push, it was like pushing a lead weight and finally the car stopped after pushing with all my strength with both feet. I was driving into the publix parking lot at mirasol in palm beach gardens and parking the car in the parking spot, luckily this did not happen on my way to the store or I would have crashed. So I was actually in motion in the parking lot trying to park my car.

I was driving under an overpass on the far-right lane at 25 mph when the car's front assist system activated bringing the car to a full stop all of a sudden. There weren't any cars in front or next to me.

My car shakes and brakes are really touchy due to the forward assist.

While going through a curve, if attempt to slow down, my brakes seem to make some type of scraping sound and I can feel the scrape or vibration of the problem through the pedal.
