2 Ignition Module problem of the 2009 Volkswagen Routan

Failure Date: 12/11/2017

Since buying our 2009 Routan in the fall of 2016 we have sunk thousands into it trying to get it fixed because of the issues we have had shortly after buying it (ours did not come with a warranty from the vw dealer). At least twice a week, and sometimes more, it stalls while we are driving. . . Usually at low speeds like when we are slowing down to make a turn or slowing down for a stoplight. Usually, all of the dashboard lights and controls will blink and ding repeatedly before stalling. It also stalls when sitting still. It will blink all of the lights, the controls will go crazy and the windshield wipers will go back and forth one time as it stalls. On Dec 11 it stalled on a major road in charlotte, nc and I lost all power so I could not even put on my flashers. I have an autistic child who was freaking out because I was trying to get all of the kids to be quiet so I could call my husband as we were sitting in the middle of a busy road. We were in a middle lane and the windows were up so I had to open my door quickly and wave for people to go around us. I kept watching my rear view mirror and praying we wouldn't get hit as cars zipped around us honking. The key was stuck in the ignition since there was no power. My husband was headed towards us and I waved people around us for about 5 minutes while jingling the key and trying everything to get something to work. The power finally came back and the key came out and I was able to restart and get home but my kids are afraid to go anywhere in that van again. We have replaced the battery, the control module (one of the most expensive things we tried), the erg valve, the alternator, and some other parts our mechanic wanted to try. Super eagle auto care has been super helpful in trying to fix it but to no avail. We have learned since buying this vehicle that this is a common problem for vw Routan.

3 Ignition Module problem of the 2010 Volkswagen Routan

Failure Date: 09/01/2017

Esp abs light illuminates while car is in motion and the car will not shift out of gear when stopped as if the break is not detected. Have to shut car off in the middle of traffic or drop of lines and turn back on several times to clear error and get shifter to shift to drive gear. Used snap on reader to check codes and does not recognize car as vw, instead it pulls up Chrysler town and country. Tried to replace a break light module, the part was actually for a Dodge neon. (I am only owner, bought van brand new). Symptom came back after two days. Code reader cannot find anything causing code trigger. Also key doesn't always work in ignition switch, must sometimes try to turn on 3 times. This has occurred since purchase. Amazed at all these safety issues and yet vw does nothing. $34,000 car and I am going to have to replace it already. Only 66,000 miles on the car. Transmission rebuilt by vw at 12,000 miles, rotors changed at 9,000 miles, motor parts rebuilt at 35,000 miles. Car burns 6 quarts of oil every 4,000 miles. Van doors will shut on kids even though they are supposed to stop when something is in the way. Worst car I have ever bought, and vw doesn't care to resolve all these issues customers have.

There were no warning indicators illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer (flow Volkswagen, 5011 new centre dr, wilmington, nc 28403, (910) 392-3889) where it was diagnosed that the win module /ignition switch needed to be replaced; however, the parts were on backorder. 6 Ignition Module problem of the 2011 Volkswagen Routan

Failure Date: 12/10/2016

I have been struggling with starting my Volkswagen Routan on the initial engagement of the key, the problem started within the last two months. In the same time frame, the vehicle would suddenly turn off in the middle of driving. I have seen that in 2009 and 2010 model there was a recall of the ignition switch that showed similar issues. My car does have 10000 miles, so I am trying to determine if it was an initial faulty item or a part that needs to be replaced. The dealership replaced the tipm module, but it did not correct the issues. I want to see if other 2011 models are experiencing the same issues, and wether the 2011 models should be extended to the recall for the 2009/2010 models.

7 Ignition Module problem of the 2014 Volkswagen Routan

Failure Date: 08/04/2016

Vw Routans are known by the manufacturer to have the totally integrated power module or "tipm" fail causing the electrical system to shutdown. This failure is random and happens with no warning. My personal vehicle experienced this failure while pulling up to a stop sign and losing all power. The engine did restart after cycling the ignition switch and drove fine afterwards. The Routan is a joint venture vehicle with Chrysler who has had the same "tipm" issues and has issued recalls to correct the safety concern as this event could happen while going 70 mph down the highway potentially causing an accident and serious harm to those involved. Vw USA has already told me they do not recognize the failure of this "tipm" and it is a concern of the consumer and not the manufacturer. My local dealer has acknowledge this failure and has stated many other consumers have paid out of pocket, $1,200. 00 approximately, as vw USA declined to assist and the consumers needed to fix their vehicles. To date the only time vw will acknowledge and/or pay for the repair is if the dealer can duplicate the failure mode, which by its very nature is random and doesn't produce a fault code, which basically makes it impossible for the dealer to correct and file a warranty claim against it.

8 Ignition Module problem of the 2010 Volkswagen Routan

Failure Date: 04/11/2016

While driving at 70 mph on the interstate the van shut-off with out warning. There are no check engine lights. The only warning light was the loss of the traction control. I was able to move the van to the shoulder even with the loss of steering. It took several tries, but I was able to restart the van. This has happened in the past at low speeds. The egr valve was replaced two months ago. I have also replaced the integrated power control module in the past 1. 5 years. I have also have issues of the van not wanting to start. I turn the ignition key and there is no response from the van. It is as if I am not even trying to start the van. This is a huge safety issue. Search the internet and you will find this is a common issue. I am disappointed that there has not been a safety recall on.

9 Ignition Module problem of the 2009 Volkswagen Routan

Failure Date: 11/03/2015

Had the win module replaced for the electrical system ignition switch recall. Now the car will make sudden stops and shut down. Car then will not start up unless the battery is unhooked and hooked back up. Dealer wants to charge 350. 00 to do a diagnostic test to determine the cause.

10 Ignition Module problem of the 2010 Volkswagen Routan

Failure Date: 05/13/2015

Several times over the last year when I go to start my van I turn the key and all the lights come on, on the dash yet the vehicle does not start. There is no noise associated with this incident. It can take several tries to get the van to start. Last fall I had the integrated power control module replaced after total failure. This caused the van to loose all power. It was a silver paperweight. Before then and since then, there have been intermittent electrical issues mostly centering around the ignition. I have a concern that one day it will not start and I will be stranded with my children.

11 Ignition Module problem of the 2010 Volkswagen Routan

Failure Date: 10/29/2014

I received a letter informing me that my wife's vw Routan had a recall on the win module / ignition. I set up an appointment to have the recall taken care of. The vehicle was there for two days and I was told they couldn't get the parts and to come pick it up. When I got home I researched the recall and found that the ignition can turn off while driving. Since then my keys have gone bad which needed to be replaced at a cost to me and I still don't have a date that parts will be received. The vw corporate office was unable to give me an estimated date in which they could get the new ignition to a dealer for the recall. The vw has now been sitting in the driveway waiting for repair for over 3 months. The corporate office just wants the dealership to diagnose what caused the keys to stop working and won't answer my questions about the recall. The vehicle is unsafe for my wife and children to travel in.

12 Ignition Module problem of the 2009 Volkswagen Routan

Failure Date: 09/16/2014

Have owned this vehicle for 5 months. Vehicle would not start. . . Had been driven aprox 30 miles/cooled just would click, would restart after time given, taken to dealer no problems found, it has done this 4 more time since, is part of the recall 14v-396. Have taken it back to the dealer purchased from and vw dealership and problem cannot be duplicated therefore it cannot be repaired. It has been in the shop for two weeks and no solution found. . . . Suspect it is the ignition switch in the recall but is not throwing out any code. Vw states that they cannot replaced because there is no code and if whin module none are available plus the recall states remedy not available. Vw rep said we could pay out of pocket, and then if later found out to be under the recall they would reimburse. . . Which is totally a lie since there are no whin modules available and that isn't a known fix. I find it totally absurd that they really think we should be driving this vehicle since a failure may happen at anytime, speed, and may cause a crash. The fact that they do not value the lives in the vehicle is very discouraging. Have suggested they replace vehicle or pay the loan and was told that that was doubtful.

13 Ignition Module problem of the 2010 Volkswagen Routan

Failure Date: 09/01/2014

The contact owns a 2010 Volkswagen Routan. While driving approximately 30 mph, the vehicle stalled without warning. The vehicle was able to be restarted. The failure recurred on several occasions. The vehicle was taken to the dealer who diagnosed that the ignition module was faulty and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The manufacturer stated that the VIN was not included in NHTSA campaign number: 15v194000 (electrical system). The approximate failure mileage was 35,000.

14 Ignition Module problem of the 2009 Volkswagen Routan

Failure Date: 07/06/2012

Van was traveling 65mph on interstate when the car switched from on to accessory mode. Vw service indicated that the incident was caused by a faulty win (wireless ignition node module). When the car switched to accessory mode, I lost power to the engine and I had no anti-lock brakes or power steering. I was able to coast the van to the side of the road without an accident. This exact issue has been reported in several 2009 Routans and was already subject to a recall for the 2010 Routan's. It also impacts the grand caravans and town & country's, which share a platform with the Routan. Given the high likelihood that this sudden engine shutoff can lead to an accident, I am surprised that Volkswagen has not been required to expand the win module recall to include the 2009 models. I am also extremely frustrated with Volkswagen's response, which was to disclaim any legal responsibility for repair (since it was outside of the warranty period). This is a known defect and should be addressed accordingly.

15 Ignition Module problem of the 2010 Volkswagen Routan

Failure Date: 07/20/2011

Vw has a recall on 2010 Routan vans on a part call a winn module which controls the car ignition. Our van is on the recall list and has shut-off twice in traffic. You have no engine power and lose power steering. On low speed roads not as big a problem as on a freeway were it could be life threatening. Our van has been at south town vw and we have been waiting for 8 weeks for a part that should come in next week. Richard the service manager at south town finally admitted they had no idea when the part would come in. So I called vw corporate and spoke with multiple people, one said they had no idea there was a backorder, I informed him the dealer said that they had 30 vans waiting for the part, at one dealer in utah. Finally today, after a week a vw manager named erik walowksi called my wife and said they had no eta on the part and they were still researching the kind of backorder it is. What a relief that they have no idea when part will come in and I have a family van that will quit in traffic. Is it possible for this backorder problem to be looked at by someone other the vw before someone gets hurt. Thank you.
