Automatic Emergency Braking Problems of Acura Integra

While approaching a slowing car on the offramp, the Acura's automatic braking slammed on the brakes abruptly while flashing "brake" on the dash. The car stopped well short of the car in front. This abrupt, uncommanded stopping resulted in a near miss whereby the driver behind my car nearly hit me. In addition to stopping sooner than required, and thus giving the driver behind me less chance to react, the system did not apply full braking force, but more like 90-95% of maximum braking force. This is an example of schroedinger's automatic emergency braking, where a situation is simultaneously "unavoidable" such that the car intervenes, yet not dire enough to apply full braking. This car will stop from 60mph in less than 110 feet, but the system appears to be calibrated for a much lower performance car with tires made of wood, such as an a-spec or technology package Acura. This car has had previous incidents of defective automatic braking at low speeds, however with nobody behind me these did not result in a near miss. During the 20 months that I have owned the car it has slammed the brakes while pulling into my garage as well. For some inexplicable reason, Acura's calibration engineers think that I am going to drive through my water heater and furnace after 25 years of driving with no accidents. Due to these previous incidents, I had adjusted the "distance" parameter for the aeb to the shortest allowable, but it still activates unnecessarily. While this low speed braking defect will not cause a serious injury or fatality, it is yet another example of the poor execution that plagues this car. In summary, the automatic braking system on this car is dangerous and unusual, and is mis-calibrated considering the performance capability of the car.

The contact owns a 2024 Acura Integra. The contact stated that after pulling into a self-service car wash vacuum bay, the contact started drying the vehicle. The contact dried both the passenger-side front and rear doors, the trunk and the driver-side rear door. While drying the driver-side front door, the vehicle suddenly moved unintendedly about 15 ft. The contact grabbed the door frame and was eventually able to bring the vehicle to a stop, preventing a crash or injury. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, who was unable to duplicate the failure. The contact was initially informed that a manufacturer field technician would need to inspect the vehicle; however, the contact was later informed that the manufacturer had sent instructions on how to service the vehicle, which the contact deemed unsatisfactory due to the safety risk. Additionally, the contact stated that the vehicle had previously rolled after being parked and turned off, with the parking brake engaged. There was no warning light illuminated. Additionally, the contact stated that the tpms reading had failed to display, the collision mitigation braking system had engaged erroneously, and the windows had rolled up and down unintendedly. The contact also stated driving at 5 mph in a parking lot, an abnormal booming sound emanated from the passenger's side of the vehicle. The vehicle was not yet diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was contacted and filed a case. The failure mileage was approximately 4,558.

Was driving at 75 to 80 mph speeds on interstate, and had approximately 4 to 5 seconds (400 feet+ at 75 mph) of clearance ahead of me before the next car. I had cruise control enabled and the adaptive cruise control was on the closest setting. Weather was clear and sunny and there were no visibility issues. The nearest vehicle in front was far beyond the acc clearance zone. Suddenly the collision mitigation braking enabled and the car braked, beeped, and the warning light flashed. The car slowed suddenly from 75-80 down into the low 60mph range. I then had to tap the brake to disable or acknowledge the warning, resulting in another sudden brake. The vehicle has not yet been inspected by the dealer but I have contacted them. Safety of myself was at risk of sudden high speed braking or flipover if I had been in a turn. I also could have been easily rear ended. This happened twice in an hour span on the same drive. I believe both times this happened, the nearest vehicles in front were full size motorcycles.
