I received a recall notice for the lower control arms on my 1998 Audi A4. I contacted the dealer to schedule the service. They are going to inspect my control arms. If they need to be replaced I must pay for the replacement because I can prove that I had an Audi technician look at the control arms at the regularly scheduled intervals. This seems very unsafe seeing how it affects the steering of the car. It also seems unusual an inspection of the control arms would prevent a failure of the control arms.

While turning left at 25 mph, the vehicle vibrated and the driver heard a loud noise coming from the rear. Suddenly the passenger lower control arm broke. The driver was able to maintain control of the vehicle and pull over. The vehicle was towed home. The consumer will get in contact with the dealer in the near future. Please provide further details.
1998 Audi A4 fwd / 101,000 miles / broken drivers side front lower control arm / front suspension component (lower front control arm) snapped at bushing as I was parking. Car was rendered limp and could not be towed due to probable fender damage that would be caused by dragging limp wheel. Had this component broken at higher speeds a catastrophic accident would have been unavoidable.
Left and right lower control arms (2 on each side for a total of 4) were severly worn, and have been for quite some time prior to my having the defect inspected. With the car on lift, the ball joint could be pulled out of it's socket with little effort. Had I hit a bump at a high rate of speed, this could easily cause loss of control. I am contacting Audi as well, but haven't as of this writing.
In 1998, while still under warranty Audi was advised of a problem which began with a noise in the car. This was eventually diagnosed as defective control arms and the lower control arms were replaced in 2/2000 at no cost to myself as Audi admitted that there was a "defect" in that model year. 2 weeks ago, I discoverd that the lower controls arms have a problem with the bolt that holds them together. I again reported this to Audi of America and was again told that they had many problems with this model and to take it to the nearest dealer. I was instructed Audi and my mechanic that the I could lose the steering at any point. Upon inspection by Audi they determined that the care is not safe to drive and that these upper control arms must be replaced. After discussing this with them, they have been extremely uncooperative and rude and have agreed to pay half of the parts, but I must pay all of the labor at their premium prices. Since the car is too dangerous to drive I do not have the option to take it to a reasonably priced auto shop. Audi has known about this problem for two yeas, as I was told by an Audi mechanic that they had considered a recall. Audi is putting their customers in great danger and will do nothing until someone is killed.
