One problem related to engine head gasket leaking has been reported for the 1998 Audi A6. The most recently reported issues are listed below.
Lower and upper gaskets are leaking. These leaks drop on hot parts of the engine and create smoke fume. I had the lower gasket replaced for about $500. I know that similar services are done 2 more times in the history of this car for the exact problem. I doubt that there is a design issue on this area.
