Audi A8 owners have reported 28 problems related to electrical system (under the electrical system category). The most recently reported issues are listed below. Also please check out the statistics and reliability analysis of Audi A8 based on all problems reported for the A8.
The headlight warning light came on. The headlight on left had gone out. Opening the headlight assembly ( a 2,000 to 6000 dollar part) there are about 20 wires inside the assembly, every wire was partially bare, the insulation has cracked off every wire inside the assembly. A small wire harness connects everything inside the light, the harness is not available to fix it. The cost to have a harness for the car available, should not be a issue. We need lights and to replace a headlight is a 20 dollar fix not a 2500 dollar. Fix.

My grandson and I got in the car after being in a lego store for 20 minutes. We tried to start the car to leave but the car started the electronic starting procedure but stoped. All kinds of malfunction and failure lights came on and everything locked up. We were trapped in the car and could not escape.

Total electrical shutdown over about 2 minutes. Stranded on road. All electrical systems failed rapidly. Strongly suspect this is part of known bsg/alternator issues with this model.

Me and my son were traveling on a business road trip from my home in Lincoln, CA to do business at several companies and end up at a customer located in anaheim, CA. We started on highway 5 in roseville, CA highway interstate 5 traveling towards anaheim with stops along the way. We were coming down highway 5 on the southside of the grapevine at the speed limit of 70 mph, when the engine began to stall, and the steering also began to lock up. We began losing control of the vehicle and engine power was failing and stalling. In addition, the stall was impacting the car battery. We had difficulty steering the car and controlling the direction of the car and getting the car to the side of the road. Once we were at the side of the road, we looked up the closest Audi dealership, fortunately we were 3. 9 miles away from Audi dealership in van nuys, CA. Once on the side of the road the vehicle initially would not restart the engine stalling had drained the battery. We waited on the side of the road for approx. . 40 minutes and were able to restart the car and drive with much difficulty to the keys Audi van nuys dealership. We were able to barely get into the dealership parking lot when the car completely stalled, we went in and met with the service manager. We explained what had happened, and with the service teams help we pushed the vehicle into a bay to get reviewed. I have purchased eight (8) Audi’s over the past years for me and my wife. The service manager promised to review the problem. Typically, Audi service will give you a vehicle to drive but the had no vehicles available, so they told us they would take us to a rental car company and cover the cost of the vehicle except for the insurance on rental car, which we had to pickup at a rate of $ 35. 00 per day. As we were on a work trip we had to hustle to our customers as we had a meeting scheduled for 2:30 pm at manna beverage in anaheim, CA. We went to our meeting and then returned to the Audi dealership in van nuys.

Ecu starting to malfunction as a coolant leak valve is leaking into it. There is a recall for these models but not for my specific car but I do believe my car is affected because my car has a coolant leak that I personally can’t find and my car was just worked on by Audi indianapolis and they did not see any coolant leaks either. It was mentioned to me by another Audi A8 owner and it’s making sense to me as the way everything began to fail on my car until I detached the battery and attached it back it worked fine but sometimes the ecu will begin to fail for adaptive cruise control randomly, then it will work again. These are symptoms of coolant leaking and affecting the ecu, and I can’t afford to pay for that to be fixed because it would cost more than what the car is worth but I would like to see if my car was affected by this recall because I genuinely believe this is what is happening.

Electrical system malfunction. Faulty generator shut dow. All electrical systems and eventually shut the car down.
While driving on highway my car experienced massive electrical malfunction. All systems shut down (including dashboard) and engine cut off. I think it was a miracle that I was able to pull over to the roadside parking lot without any accident. The issue was caused by faulty design of the starter-alternator combo that may render the car undriveable (single point of failure). I had to use a tow track to get my car to nearest dealership where it is right. I think it is extremely dangerous to have cars on the road with possibility of total breakdown without any warnings. My car has only 43000 miles on it so this was totally unexpected and created safety hazard for any all drivers nearby. I just checked some internet boards for Audi and apparently there are many other cars that experienced that issue.
Hello, on April 6th, 2023, at 12 pm, my car experienced a electrical malfunction within the start/stop system, which didn’t posed an immediate threat to my life. Later that day, the car stalled on me while driving, causing a highly dangerous situation on a busy street during peak traffic hours. Multiple error codes appeared, and the transmission failed, leaving me in a perilous position. It is alarming that Audi is aware of this life-threatening issue, yet no recall has been issued thus far. I urge NHTSA to take swift action and hold Audi accountable for this critical failure, which endangers not only my life but the lives of others on the road. Please refer to the link below for evidence supporting my claim. The issue is widespread, affecting various models of Audi, including the 2019 a6, a7, and A8. . Read more...
Electrical malfunction light came on and it says to pull over and cut your car off and also contact your dealer. This is very scary because you may be in am area that is very isolated or dangerous to stop. This is very disturbing. This is a known problem by Audi. The vehicle is currently at the Audi dealership. There were no warnings prior to this.
Message appeared on display Jan 7 2023: "electrical system: malfunction! please contact service" the trunk lid opened while I was driving, the a/c quit (I am in key west!), the auto start/stop quit. I had heard of many other Audi owners whose car just quit, so I scooted home and parked. I had it towed to coral gables FL at my expense, and the dealer told me it was an alternator problem that needed to be replaced. None available in the us, could be months before it's repaired. Car is 2019 Audi A8 with 42,000 miles.
The contact owns a 2019 Audi 8. The contact stated while driving approximately 40 mph, the message "electrical malfunction" was suddenly displayed before the vehicle lost motive power and stalled. The vehicle failed to restart. The vehicle was towed to the local dealer who diagnosed that the alternator was faulty and needed to be replaced. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and informed the contact that the parts needed to repair the vehicle were not available. The failure mileage was 45,000.
Alternator/start stop generator is bad. Car stopped dead in the intersection.
Start system malfunction causes the car to randomly lose all power and roll back when at a stopped, causing the car to be disabled and unable to start again. Faults indicate a failure of the 48v belt driven starter generator. Parts to repair defect are severely back ordered, taking months to obtain.

There is an open recall: 16v619000 which applies to a set of VIN numbers. This same issue happened on my vehicle and my VIN is not part of the recall. Other VIN numbers should be included in this recall like mine. I had to get the repaired on my own for $2500 because this recall isn’t showing up for my VIN number.
After water damage to the bottom level of the seat an electrical fire started. It burned through and melted the plastic facing on the right side of the seat near the seat adjustment mechanism releasing toxic fumes we have so far been unable to abate. The manufacturer has been unresponsive in addressing this hazard. The damage is available for inspection. The toxic fumes are a health hazard as was the fire. The dealer inspected the damage and refused to repair it. The bureau of auto repairs in California also inspected the damage. There were no warning lights activated.

8/23/2021-I was slowing down at a red light and getting ready to stop but the light turned green and so high pushed on the gas to go before I got to a full stop. The battery warning light came on so I turned around to go back home can you swap cars. My fiancé had to go to work that day and took the vehicle. On his way back going 60 mph on the highway, the power to the vehicle shut down and he was unable to do anything other than slow down and pull off to the side of the road. The vehicle was sent into the Audi dealership and they changed out the 48v battery in the trunk. They also ordered an alternator but did not install it because it start it back up. A couple weeks later (9/25/2021) the same thing happened at a stop sign as I was slowing down but not at a complete stop and hit the gas and the battery light came back on. That light means the battery is disconnected from the engine and once the power runs out, it will shut down again. So I took it straight to the dealership and left it there until they can take a look at it. It’s at the dealership now. There seems to be a flaw in the (stop/go)system of the vehicle when the engine wants to turn off at a stop and when to restart the engine to go. Causing a disconnect of the battery in the trunk to the engine.
1: my passenger door sensitive door closing sensor is not working 2: my sunroof is off track and makes noises 3: battery cord is corroded. There is no where in the world to get 1 right now apparently. I bought a brand new battery and car still doesn’t pull energy from the battery so I’m scared the car won’t start very soon.

When the sunroof retracts or closes it makes a loud noise (sounds like an mri machine). I keep it closed for possible glass cracking safety reasons. This occurs while idle or driving on any street/highway surface. Audi thinks its a motor issue and is not covered by warranty or any recall.

While driving on a city street my car suddenly stopped (4 lane street -- 2 going, to coming). There was very heavy traffic and I could not move the car as it would not come back on, nor could I shift the car into neutral to push it out of the way. As a result, the car remained in the middle of the road, in heavy traffic, for about 2 hours until the tow truck arrived. The car was towed to the local dealer where it the dealter took 4 days to diagnose it with having coolant leaked into the engine wire harness and into the pcm where it shorted the pins. As a result the car was completely inoperable. This caused a very unsafe condition as the behind me suddenly had to break and just missed hitting my car. The car just shut down and would not restart or engage the neutral gear in order for me to get out of the middle of the road. This seems to be a common thing and something that should require Audi to address via a recall in order to replace the affected part(s) before something like this happens or require Audi to make appropriate repairs to those affected by this common and dangerous fault. This is a serious safety issue! dealer wants $11000 to repair it! what should I do?? loss of work and pay as car is stranded at Audi dealer! agony! embarrassment!.
I was driving on a suburban city street in a straight line with no cars or any other obstructions ahead of me or behind me. Without warning, the car engaged its emergency braking throwing my daughter and me forward violently into our seat belts. When I fell back, the dashboard was showing me a proximity warning but again nothing was anywhere near our car. The servicing dealer said they didn't find any error codes and so there was nothing they could do. This hasn't happened again (yet) but the cameras all around the car that engage for parking and in reverse are constantly going out and/or the vehicle mmi system randomly retracts into the dash while driving.

The transmission coolant valve leaked coolant on to the engine control module causing it to malfunction. The card stopped while in motion in the middle of the busy street and I was almost hit buy a semi truck. It started back up, I got it to a parking lot and it stopped again. I have found no less than 50 online complaints about this problem. Most of the complaints state that the manufacturer was "aware" of the problem.
The contact owns a 2015 Audi A8. The contact stated that while driving at approximately 60 mph, the vehicle speed decreased and suddenly failed to go over 40 mph. In addition, when depressing the accelerator pedal, the vehicle stalled. The failure occurred intermittently. The vehicle was taken to the dealer but the failure could not be duplicated. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 10,427.
Driver smelled smoke shortly after starting his vehicle and driving away from his home. The smell was of plastic, and it was assumed from an electrical short/fire. The driver stopped the car and inspected the engine area. No evidence of fire, however the driver turned back and drove the vehicle home. Strong burning plastic smell again as the vehicle was stopped. The cabin was filling with smoke. Driver opened the trunk as the battery was located in the right rear section of the trunk. Smoke was emanating from the battery compartment. A plastic panel was removed for inspection. Located directly under the battery was a plastic module identified as trw gnoacdobnc28u* and stamped made in malaysia¿. The dealer stated that the module controls the electric parking brake for the car. Inspecting the unit, multiple wire leads that feed the e-brake control unit had burned through, as did a portion of the e-brake control unit. The body area of the car near the unit was covered in soot from the electrical fire. Years prior, the driver had issues with the e-brake, the e-brakes failing to release prompting the vehicle to be towed to the dealer. At that time the service representative walked the driver into the service area to show the driver corrosion on the electric contact leads from the control unit. The representative suggested that perhaps battery acid/gasses may have run down the battery into the control unit causing the corrosion. The unit may have been replaced at that time along with the battery. Photos are available of the control unit upon request.

My vehicle encountered electrical damage due to water in footwells of the car. This obviously is a common problem I was not aware of before purchasing the vehicle.
The contact stated a gallon of milk spilled into the driver's seat. The milk spilled underneath the seat. When this happened it shorted out the electrical module that operated the dashboard lights and headlights. As a result the lights were blinking in and out. Currently, the vehicle is at a certified dealership for repairs. Updated 12/27/2005 - the tire pressure monitoring light illuminated on the dash. The dealer replaced the module. The trunk would not close properly.
Vehicle's rear passenger doors open automatically whenever power windows are rolled down. Doors will not shut unless owner pulls over and shuts door from the outside.
Mmi system has intermittent resets and cause erratic performance of other systems such a windows, trunk, Audio, navigation.
