Fuel Pump Problems of BMW 135

BMW 135 owners have reported 27 problems related to fuel pump (under the gasoline fuel system category). The most recently reported issues are listed below.

1 Fuel Pump problem of the 2011 BMW 135

Failure Date: 12/20/2018

Two times within a year the vehicle has experienced a reduction of power and the check engine light came on. On 4-3-18 I took the vehicle to the modesto BMW dealer and was advised I needed the fuel pump replaced which I did spending $1355. Late in December the same problem occurred and I again took it to the same dealer who now advised me I needed the "high pressure fuel pump " replaced to the tune of $1750. This car has 57,000 miles. I am aware there were recalls on the same vehicles in the years preceding 2011 and wonder if the problem continued without resolution. This is a safety problem as losing power at highway speeds is dangerous.

2 Fuel Pump problem of the 2010 BMW 135

Failure Date: 10/15/2010

2010 BMW 135i purchased late April. . . 3000 miles when problem started. . . The car took longer than normal to start. . . While in traffic in downtown atlanta. . . Experienced lose of power or stall. . . Spitting and sputtering to a stop on the side of the road. . . Called local dealer and they towed the car to the dealership and replaced the hpfp and re-flashed the computer. . . Since then I have turbo-lag and strange noises coming from under the hood. . . The fuel pump replacement is fine, but the lower performance of the new program is unacceptable. . . I paid a lot of money for the performance and to dumb down the computer to keep from replacing other components is wrong. . . Fix the problem for real and there would be no issue.

3 Fuel Pump problem of the 2009 BMW 135

Failure Date: 09/21/2010

I own a 2009 BMW 135i with the n54 twin turbo engine. One day I was driving down the interstate at 70mph when suddenly the car lost all power and suddenly decelerated. A warning lamp on the dash came on indicating the car was only operating at half engine power. The car was running very roughly and shook and shuddered violently when I pressed on the accelerator. . . . I was unable to maintain a vehicle speed above 50mph. I finally had to pull off the road and let traffic pass. When I put the car in park it was still shaking and heaving. I reported this immediately to the BMW service department where I purchased my vehicle. While I was told it was due to the high pressure fuel pump, I was told that BMW was unable to offer any resolution at this time. Since then, this has happened three times, each time in heavy rush hour traffic. I feel that this is extremely unsafe and is likely going to result in a serious accident. BMW is aware of this problem and yet seems to be unable to solve the problem. Many other owners of the 135i, 335i and 535i have reported similar instances. Will you please encourage BMW to recall these unsafe vehicles before somebody is hurt or killed?.

4 Fuel Pump problem of the 2008 BMW 135

Failure Date: 08/31/2010

Vehicle is a BMW 135i, model year 2008, convertible. Car suffers sudden and complete loss of power at high speed and often during high-traffic, rush- hour speeds on moderate incline sometimes with minimal safe shoulder and median. This the 6th incident over the last year and a half. BMW of san diego replaced fuel pressure sensor and multiple high-pressure fuel pumps. We have barely avoided multiple accidents. We are scared to drive our car.

5 Fuel Pump problem of the 2008 BMW 135

Failure Date: 08/31/2010

My BMW 135i has 16,000 miles on it and I have had to high pressure fuel pump failures. The car is unreliable and dangerous.

6 Fuel Pump problem of the 2010 BMW 135

Failure Date: 08/07/2010

On August 5th 2010, when starting my car I received several long cranks. Once started it drove fine. On August 7th, (at about 1:00am) when starting the car, it cranked for about 7 seconds and finally started. It drove fine. I stopped at a store, and when leaving, it started up fine, but as I pulled out into the road, the engine light came on and the car had reduced power. The car (with only 5500 miles or so) was shaking violently when going under 10 miles an hour. The rpm's fluctuated at idle to where the car almost stalled several times. I drove the 15 or so miles home with my flashers on as the car was having trouble. The above is a description of hpfp failure on the n54 engine. I would say many, many people get a bad fuel pump. BMW has covered the part for 10 years/120k miles, but it will fail again. There is no fix at this point. Just a new pump that eventually gives way. I know people who are on their 4th pump. Just do a google search on "BMW hpfp" and see what comes up. The 135i, 335i, 535i an z4 35i all have the n54 engine, and they all suffer from this defect. Loss of power really concerns me, what if I was doing 65mph on a highway when the pump decided to fail? I brought the car into the dealership, and explained the long cranks and loss of power etc. . And they explained BMW has to approve all fuel pump swaps. Got a call 2 days later to say they will replace the pump today, August 10th. In addition to the new pump, I will be getting a software update as well.

7 Fuel Pump problem of the 2008 BMW 135

Failure Date: 07/25/2010

While driving on a busy, 45-mph road, my car lost power suddenly and began to shudder when I applied the gas pedal. I was losing speed and unable to accelerate. I had no choice but to put on my hazard lights, and pull into the nearest parking lot I could find. After researching the problem, along with scanning the car for any error codes, I discovered that the high pressure fuel pump (hpfp) had failed and needed replacement. Oddly enough, this was the 3rd hpfp that has failed on this car.

8 Fuel Pump problem of the 2009 BMW 135

Failure Date: 07/07/2010

My 2009 BMW 135i began experiencing "long cranks" when attempting to start the engine cold. While driving at freeway speeds the car began experiencing intense vibration when accelerating. Following the vibration, the car experienced lack of power and engine light was illuminated. This could result in loss of control at highway speeds and should be further investigated due to the frequency of this problem with BMW's hpfp. The dealership updated the cars software and replaced the high pressure fuel pump.

9 Fuel Pump problem of the 2010 BMW 135

Failure Date: 06/18/2010

I purchased a brand new 2010 BMW 135i on September 30, 2009. Driving home from work I attempted to pass a car on a multi-lane road when the car started bucking and starving for fuel/power. I slowed down and the problem appeared to subside, however upon further acceleration the car again started bucking and starving for power. On the 3rd attempt to accelerate, the car went into "limp mode" which allows the car to be driven under severely reduced power. The warning said to stop driving the car and call the dealership. I called BMW assist and they took the car to the dealer and replaced the high pressure fuel pump and low pressure fuel sensor and also conducted a full computer reprogram. Since then, the car has idled very rough. This is completely unacceptable for a brand new vehicle.

10 Fuel Pump problem of the 2009 BMW 135

Failure Date: 05/15/2010

2009 BMW 135i high pressure fuel pump failure. This has been a bad problem with 3 model years (2008, 2009, and 2010) of BMW 135i cars. Luckily my car was fixed due to long start cranks before the common symptom of engine dying during driving conditions.

11 Fuel Pump problem of the 2010 BMW 135

Failure Date: 05/08/2010

2010 BMW 135i recently had my car in for brake service (5/7/10) at BMW. The following day I noticed a long crank x1 at start up. I headed to work and noticed decreased power but didn't think much of it. On my way home I was accelerating onto the freeway when my car lost all power (engine still on, but felt like it was stalling out) and the traffic behind me nearly crashed into me due to how sudden and without warning of the deceleration. I was luckily able to pull off to the shoulder immediately avoiding a multicar accident. My check engine light flashed on and my car was in limp mode. Unsteady idle, very poor acceleration and couldn't go above 20mph. I was able to scan my car for codes: 29dc: 29dc cylinder injection switch-off explanation: fuel related code fix: normally requires fuel pump replacement 2fbf: 2fbf fuel pressure at injection release explanation: fuel pump pressure code fix: normally requires fuel pump replacement this is a widespread know problem with the n54 engine and is very dangerous. I fear they did a software upgrade on my car without my consent 5/7/10. My car is schedule to go into service at BMW Monday 5/10/10.

12 Fuel Pump problem of the 2010 BMW 135

Failure Date: 03/12/2010

BMW high pressure fuel pump (hpfp) failed while I was driving on a busy four lane city road. The hpfp is covered by BMW's warranty and was replaced. However, there appears to be a lot of BMW owners of the 135i and 335i that have had similar experiences but much more risk involved, e. G. Failure while accelerating onto a freeway. This is the first failure my my2010 car has had; others have reported 3 failures.

13 Fuel Pump problem of the 2010 BMW 135

Failure Date: 02/14/2010

Car started long 3-7 second cranks at 600 miles, then continued until at 1300 miles, car almost shut down on highway with an ses light. Car is at the shop being fixed now with a high pressure fuel pump being replaced. 2010 BMW 135i 1350 miles!.

14 Fuel Pump problem of the 2009 BMW 135

Failure Date: 02/10/2010

Vehicles affected: BMW 135i, 335i, 535i. . . Any BMW using the n54 engine will have a part called the high pressure fuel pump. Mine has failed on me twice, the first time the pump failed I was stationary. Second time the pump failed I was driving at 60km/h and tried to accelerate to overtake. . . The pump failed and vehicle had shut off and instant loss of power causing cars to rapidly brake. This is a serious issue and can be dangerous if the problem happens randomly and unexpected. BMW has tried to address this issue by issuing new parts. . . I have obtained new parts and I am on my 3rd pump and this is showing signs of failure.

15 Fuel Pump problem of the 2009 BMW 135

Failure Date: 01/20/2010

My 2009 BMW 335 I with xdrive exhibits slow starting, turbo lag, decreased fuel economy and performance. This has led to a few instances where I have been unable to quickly move out of the way of oncoming traffic, merge with quickly moving traffic, etc. I have taken the car to the dealer on multiple occasions. On two they replaced the high pressure fuel pump. Recently, the car started exhibiting the same symptoms and I was forced to take it back to the dealer. I am currently waiting on the outcome. The car has less than 10,000 miles on it.

16 Fuel Pump problem of the 2009 BMW 135

Failure Date: 01/15/2010

Even though it shows a BMW 135 on the vehicle description this is for 2009 BMW 335i, it does not have that choice on the menus. Also I did not include the VIN number because the vehicle is still in germany and has never been registered in the USA. . At least until this April when I get back there if I don't get rid of it before then. While driving approximately 60 mph on any surface, the check engine warning indicator illuminated on the instrument panel and the vehicle would go on "save mode" loosing power. The warning indicator remained lit until the engine turned off. This will happen all the time. . . The vehicle was then taken to an authorized dealer and after a week of troubleshooting and contacting BMW it was determined that the hp fuel pump was the problem and it was replaced. Three months later the car started to take too long to start when cold so back to the dealer and it's been there for over a week and the last update I received was that they might have to change the fuel pump again. This is a brand new car built in April 2009 which I picked up at BMW here in germany with us specs. The car has around 7k miles.

17 Fuel Pump problem of the 2009 BMW 135

Failure Date: 01/12/2010

There is no model option for a 335i or 335 xi for 2009. This needs to be changed. There was a sudden loss of engine power on highway. I was surrounded by other vehicles including trucks doing approximately 70 mph. I came close to getting rear ended when my car suddenly slowed without any brake lights and I could not go faster then 40 mph. This is the third failure of the high pressure fuel pump, (hpfp) on this 2009 BMW 335i. The dealer replaced the hpfp again but expects the failures to continue as BMW has not provided any resolution for the hpfp failures and safety risks associated with same despite this problem existing for four model years.

18 Fuel Pump problem of the 2009 BMW 135

Failure Date: 01/05/2010

I have 2010 BMW 135i with a fuel pump issue. It is being replaced right now. This model is known for having a fuel pump issue since it was debuted and BMW has yet to address the issue. People have replaced this pump 3 or 4 times with no permanent resolution. Leading up to the failure are long cranks, odd idling and engine lights. In certain scenarios, the car will go to "limp" mode leaving it practically un-drivable and could cause a danger if you are in traffic.

19 Fuel Pump problem of the 2009 BMW 135

Failure Date: 11/23/2009

When the weather started to change this winter my car had problems starting. The colder the weather became the longer it took for the car to start. The car seemed to be bogged down. When revving at high speeds the car started to shake. Check engine light was turned on and also the engine picture came on. I took it to BMW for a diagnostic they told me it was a fuel regulator problem and that the information had to be sent to BMW to find out what exactly is the problem two weeks later the car got worse and took it back to the dealer and they confirmed it was the high pressure fuel pump on the BMW. They replaced it with an aftermarket one. The dealership said it should not give me anymore problems.

20 Fuel Pump problem of the 2008 BMW 135

Failure Date: 11/20/2009

High pressure fuel pump ( hpfp ) failed. Driving my '08 BMW 135i the car started running rough. The next day it stalled on a road and had to be towed to a BMW dealer who replaced the hpfp.

21 Fuel Pump problem of the 2009 BMW 135

Failure Date: 10/12/2009

2009 BMW 335xi (two months old) with 4000 miles experienced long starting times and a "service engine soon" light. Car stalled in busy uncontrolled intersection as was diagnosed by BMW as a faulty high pressure fuel pump (hpfp) - a known issue that resulted in a warranty extension for that fault to 2006-2008 cars and was "corrected" for the 2009/2010 cars. This car is a July '09 (accordingly a late '09 model year) build. Reports indicate that some owners have had multiple hpfp replacements, but the fact that these cars stall during acceleration makes this a safety hazard rather than an inconvenience.

22 Fuel Pump problem of the 2009 BMW 135

Failure Date: 09/26/2009

1) car was slow to start up the day before the incident (cranked for 5-6 seconds). No indicator light or other warning. 2) high pressure fuel pump failed, causing car to lose power on a busy street. Car became nearly undrivable, with very little power and on the verge of stalling. If this occurred on the highway or on a steep hill, a crash likely would have resulted. Pump failed with 3,000 miles on the car. Other owners report pump failures as early as 1,000 miles and as frequently as every several thousand miles. 3) fuel pump replaced with a pump unit that has the same design and/or manufacturing defect.

23 Fuel Pump problem of the 2009 BMW 135

Failure Date: 08/21/2009

The contact owns a 2009 BMW 135. While driving 60 mph he noticed that the vehicle would no longer accelerate even though the engine was still running. The vehicle was taken to the dealership where the contact was informed that there was a malfunction in the fuel pump. He did not notice any differences beforehand. The current and failure mileages were 12000. Bl the consumer was informed by the dealership that this is a known problem and the new fuel pump will fail within 20,000 miles. Updated 09/14/09.

24 Fuel Pump problem of the 2008 BMW 135

Failure Date: 04/27/2009

I would often hear a liquid pumping sound on when put onto reverse after ignition. Serviced at BMW dealership but they oddly were not able to replicate the problem. I could replicate it every time. One night the car started with long cranks. "reduced power" warning came on and car was sluggish, jerky, and could not go above about 30 mph. Took it in to dealership. The fuel pump was replaced with new pump. I asked how come it wasn't replaced when I reported the problem earlier. They said they don't replace it until the pump actually dies. This is not a very safe practice.

25 Fuel Pump problem of the 2009 BMW 135

Failure Date: 04/09/2009

I have a 2009 BMW 335i coupe (no 335i option was available in this form). I was on the interstate and was at a slow pace due to traffic (around 35mph), once it cleared I accelerated aggressively and immediately went into limp mode (power reduction, check engine light). I would press the accelerator all the way down only to hear the engine revving while I was going nowhere. I pulled the car to the side of the road and turned the car off and then back on. I got no check engine light and the car seemed fine. I drove to the dealer and they replace the high pressure fuel pump (hpfp). They told me that the hpfp was replaced with an updated one but I don't believe this one bit due to friends having up to 3 hpfp failures of the same year (or newer) of the same car.

26 Fuel Pump problem of the 2008 BMW 135

Failure Date: 03/10/2009

High pressure fuel pump failure on 2008 BMW 135i with n54 3. 0l turbo engine. Symptoms were long cranks prior to starting. Replaced under warranty.

27 Fuel Pump problem of the 2008 BMW 135

Failure Date: 10/31/2008

I was going approx. 65mph in 5th gear in my 2008 BMW 135i coupe when the car stuttered and I got a service engine soon light. Brought my car to BMW service and my service advisor told me that I have an issue with my fuel pump and it needs to be replaced. The car only has around 5000 miles on it.
