1 Tank Assembly problem of the 2001 BMW 325

Failure Date: 07/27/2010

2001 BMW 325ci, passenger side fuel tank strap failure at front weld site causing fuel tank to hang from the under body only several inches off the ground. The rear fuel tank strap remained bolted down so strap remained attached to the vehicle, dragging on the road surface causing a loud metallic popping and scratching sound while the vehicle was in motion thus alerting driver. The failure spontaneously occurred while driving on residential roadway without any obvious collision from debris, signs of external damage or excessive rust. The front weld site at the undercarriage appeared to be torn or sheared off. Old part was not available and the strap had to be repaired by welding to a different point of the undercarriage.

After this incident, the vehicle was taken to the dealer eight more times. The dealer agreed to continue repairing any problems with this vehicle that relates to the gas tank. Updated 3/20/2006 - each time the vehicle was returned to the dealer a diagnostic test was done. Each time the test indicated a small leak in the fuel tank. The left and right rear coil spring made noise.

4 Tank Assembly problem of the 2003 BMW 325

Failure Date: 09/26/2003

Engine stalled in traffic; had to coast to side of the road. Would not re-start, despite strong cranking. Computer read "38 miles to empty" and gauge read approximately 1/4 to 1/8 tank of fuel remaining. Car was towed in and several faults were found: 240, 243. Dealer tech (vista BMW, FL) stated in service receipt: fuel sending units. Checked fuel pressure . . . Pressure was 3. 5 bar. Checked return fuel pressure at fuel tank . . . Pressure was 1. 0 bar. Removed both fuel sending units & performed resistance sweep of both resistance cars . . . Both left & right sending units had an open. Replaced left & right fuel sending units. Parts replaced: fuel sensor, suction unit. Safety consideration: sudden engine stopage can be extremely dangerous, yet this is not an isolated event. Internet web sites relate other BMW's with similar problems. Especially troublesome is the complete lack of warning. Please feel free to contact me if you would like additional information. 5 Tank Assembly problem of the 2001 BMW 325

Failure Date: 08/30/2001

A Bmwxi sports wagon with one month service developed a fuel overflow onto the cement floor of a garage attached to a single family home. The fuel gauge read zero with the warning light on. Even though the tank had just been filled. The wires from the fuel tank (sender) to the gauge in the passanger compartment were severed above the tank by rodents who had left their nest on the top of the tank. The top of the fuel tank on the left side was open to the outside giving mice or rats access through the undercarriage. A fire danger existed in the garage as a driver had attemped to fill twice to extinguish the warning light on the fuel gauge. Resulting in the volital expansion and overflow of gas. Towing service refused to take the car to the dealer until the fire department came to inspect . And allow transport. Thus there are two problems 1) the wiring harness for the entire car needs replacing (solder and tape are not adequate. 2) the portal of entry to the wiring that was cut must be closed to rodents. This is serious, soldered wires may develope cold non conducting joints in the temperature cycle, thus causing another spillage of gas when the car is parked at home and even destruction of a house.
