44 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 10/20/2023

My 2015 BMW 328i xdrive (VIN [xxx] ) experienced an engine-compartment fire that began shortly after coolant sprayed from the front of the vehicle. This incident occurred before BMW’s official recall announcement for NHTSA campaign 24v-608 / BMW 24v-608:474 (safety: engine coolant pump electrical connector). The fire originated near the coolant pump area, consistent with the recall’s described defect involving electrical shorting and overheating at the pump connector. The vehicle was declared a total loss by my insurance company. I believe this event was caused by the same defect identified in the recall and request that this incident be investigated and documented under campaign 24v-608. Supporting photos and insurance documentation are available upon request. Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).

46 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 05/01/2023

Vehicle is 100% BMW serviced for it's history, showroom to present. Vehicle had been smoking after sitting 2-3 days and driving. We'd park and see wisps of smoke coming from the wheelwells and engine bay. Alarming! never witnessed open flame, but as the saying goes, if there's smoke. . . Questionable component: 328xd fuel sensor probe (BMW part #13-53-8-594-893 fuel feed line 135040 ) complaint/report pertains to fuel sensor probe failure and resultant fuel propagation(backfeeding/leaking fuel from sensor connection) into adjacent wiring/engine bay foils. Diagnostic system did not report sensor failure until extensive damage and hazard was realized. BMW USA responded to report as not covered by warranty(high mile vehicle) and therefore not of responsibility of BMW. According to local BMW service team the event is not unusual and that several vehicles with same fail/error codes have exhibited similar fuel leakage/propagation/damages. Very probable fire hazard costly repairs; if system had detected failure when sensor failed we would have had it fixed. We reported the smoking several times but the service department didn't isolate the problem. We continued to drive the vehicle cross-country for 6+ months; each time the problem got worse. We got lucky repair bills came to almost $10k by the time we added all visits and the entire wiring bundle that had to be replaced due to fuel damage. Failed sensor repair is around $750? BMW needs to implement a way to mitigate this problem to keep from having some potentially catastrophic/lethal endings. Similar problems that have contributed to vehicle fires in these BMW vehicles: 1) heater box malfunctions 2) pcv valve 3) coolant leak.

47 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 03/20/2023

Car isn’t receiving enough power to charge the battery so it’s cutting off while I’m driving.

48 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 08/16/2022

I brought my 2015 BMW 328i to a local BMW dealership service center to inspect why my check engine light turned on. As part of their multi-point inspection, the service technician found an unrelated problem with the rear left tail light. This was identified as a critical electrical issue that required immediate repair. The details are listed in the service center's repair estimate /invoice: multi-point inspection items requiring immediate attention additional service repair critical cause upon further inspection of vehicle, found left rear tail light connector melted causing turn signal malfunction. Recommend replacing left rear tail light carrier , pins , connector upon further investigation, I found dozens of online posts from BMW 3 series owners with the exact same issue. As noted by a reply from a BMW master certified technician, this is a known issue and a defect/flaw in the design where the ground wire in the taillight is undersized, thus resulting in overload and subsequent melting of the connector. Post after post on multiple sites contain BMW owners stating the exact same issue and cause regarding the brown/ground wire leading to an electrical short. An electrical short causing a connector to actually melt seems like a safety issue. This can lead to a fire. I find this disturbing, especially with a toddler that is strapped into a car seat in the back. This is a known issue with the design that impacts the safety of the vehicle and should be a recall.

49 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 02/01/2021

I have a 2015 BMW 328i with just over 40,000 miles. A few weeks ago I began experiencing a dash warning for a "left turn signal malfunction" however it was intermittent and would often go off when turning the car off and restarting. Then I began getting a "left brake light malfunction" warning as well. Sometimes I'd get one or the other. Sometimes I would get both. Always intermittent. Sometimes it would come on at engine start up. Sometimes while driving. It has now come on and is continuous. I purchased new bulbs hoping it would solve it although doubtful that the bulb was actually the problem. As it turns out, there was a malfunction within the pigtail connector and one of the prongs is burnt out. So I have no left rear turn signal or left brake light after some googling, I discovered this is a very common issue for this car. I am out of factory warranty but do plan to file a claim using my extended warranty. That being said, with the frequency that this issue seems to occur I am incredibly surprised that there has not been a recall issued.

50 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 11/11/2019

My 2015 BMW 328i x drive left turn signal and left brake have malfunctioned since I bought the car. The same thing happen in my mother's BMW 328 series as well and a recall was open. There is a open recall on the brake light and turn signals but not for my actual vehicle. I have replaced the bulbs so I know it is something electrical. BMW refuses to fix the problem although it is a known recall! I am very disappointed, and just want my light panel repaired as this is a safety issue by BMW manufacturers not the owner.

51 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 07/12/2019

On way home today 7/12/2019 car stalled out. I had very little brakes, steering was hard to turn and car slowed down quick. It started back up but then the passenger side window started going down on its own, and the a/c stopped working, and the drivers side window will not go up, and it keeps getting a warning going on then off then on says something about brake lamp control malfunction. When I got it home I left in driveway for a while when I tried to start it back up I started getting transmission failure warning and something about the engine. Then later the car did start up without the warnings but still has the original problems.

52 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 09/21/2018

Trunk will not open. The fob, buttons, latch. . . Nothing works to open the trunk. The only way it will open is if I reach into the trunk from behind the rear seat and pull the emergency latch release.

53 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 10/23/2016

Gran turismo tailgate crashed upon my head without tail warning lights flashing or alarm. No foot kicking to activate the feature was invoked. While parked with the hatch open, I was simply placing groceries into my trunk. The problem is intermittent, and can not be repeated upon demand. I have been able to demo the problem several times since the first event. I also uncovered several other problems with the tailgate. The kicking feature to activate tailgate lifting and lowering doesn't work 100%. Vigorous kicking in different spots is needed to activate the hands free feature. Sometimes there is a partial drop and reopening of the tailgate. Sometimes the alarm works and sometimes not. When hands free closing of hatch, an obstruction will not cause the door to retreat. Finally the hatch will close without any warning.

54 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 07/26/2015

Just as I was driving off the exit ramp from the interstate highway, I lost all power, including steering wheel, brakes and throttle. Fortunately the car slowed to a stop before it entered the road, although the sheriff's deputy who soon showed up was concerned that the car was in a dangerous location. After the car stopped, I discovered that there was no power to any part of the car, including hazard lights, windows or door locks, or even the latch to open the hood. After the car was towed to the BMW dealership, I was told that the part that failed was called the fem, front electronic module. I am reporting this problem because it is potentially very dangerous. If it had happened while still on the highway, or even worse, at night, it could have been disasterous. I am concerned that there is no failsafe for the failure of a part like this, and that bad quality control on an electronic part can so easily cause a serious accident.

55 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 04/21/2015

Second episode with this 2015 BMW 328xi after the brakes failed in the first reported episode with sport mode. On Tuesday April 21 in the afternoon my wife was driving on winters Ave. In paramus NJ in eco mode, having decided to never touch the defective sport mode button again. She was driving normally, then out of the blue while pressing on the gas pedal, the car suddenly doesn't want to go and cars behind started beeping and then the car starts swerving and lights up the orange symbol of swerving on dashboard. She went into a parking lot while still swerving and called me. She parked and tried to shut car off to let it reset. She restarted it and it continued to have the same problem in the parking lot. So we called aaa who towed the car home and we called BMW dealer. Next am Wednesday April 22 BMW dealer sent tow and took my wife and the car to the dealership garage. The car has been there for a month and is still there. They need to cancel and let us out of the lease of this vehicle and refund our down payment.
